S.A.C Martin
Yes Simon, the view from there will soon be obstructed. As usual I didn't express myself very clearly. No no, you did, I was merely hinting further and looking forward to seeing the station more complete. I will be on the real Peterborough Station tomorrow lunchtime after a meeting - it'll be rather surreal to see the real thing after studying the model so much!
coachmann
Gilbert, your model photography has come on in leaps and bounds and that heading shot of the BR Class 4 75060 is a classic...It looks so real on your excellent trackwork. In response to your query, I have just found one set of etchings for the Midland D1281 corridor composite with recessed door handles as per your D1282. It looked similar to the Bachmann LMS D1694 composite. Larry

Peter Kazmierczak
Must say that's a cracking shot of the Standard Cl.4MT Gilbert.
JeffP
I too was blown away by the shot of the Standard Class 4 and it's train. Have you done anything to the loco? And I echo your sentiments regarding Tony and Little Bytham.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 20, 2011 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 20, 2011 This morning came a long anticipated visit from our own Gravy Train, bearing goodies. :) He then worked for nearly nine hours non stop, (apart form a short fish and chips break), for which I am most grateful, as he still has a three hour journey to get home. Here's the result of his labours - not just today, many months work. First though, just to make things clear, this is still very much work in progress, and there is a lot to be done yet, notably signs, a lot of advertising hoardings, platform lamps and edging and goodness knows what else, oh, and the whole thing eventually will be properly bedded in. First to be installed were the Down platform buildings, together with at long last some proper platform tops, seen here with their creator in the background. The light was difficult, so it may be hard to make out Pete Harvey's exquisite canopy brackets. I'll try to do better tomorrow. This view is of Platform 6, known as the excursion platform. This view is from the other(South) end featuring a very prominent drinking fountain, which Gravy Train aka Peter Leyland scratch built. It will have to be weathered though.... One more view of this side. The impressive tower's only purpose was to house the footbridge. The Great Northern is hard to understand, "there's no money in stations" Edward Dennison is quoted as having said back in the 1840's, and most GN buildings were austere to say the least, but occasionally something like this crept in.Ignore the ghost of Gravy Train. This is the other side of the Down buildings. Unfortunately most of this will be concealed by the overall roof when it arrives. We are now looking at the Up side, starting from the North end. I believe this to have been the Stationmaster's accomodation - unless anyone can tell me otherwise? Mind blowing modelling. Here's the main entrance, imposing eh! Much more typically Great Northern architecture, though we do have another though rather less flamboyant footbridge tower. Very difficult shadows here using artificial light. I shall see if I can do better in daylight, always assuming there is any. The South end of the Up buildings now - this was the Parcels Office, and the appropriate sign will appear on the awning in due course. And here is the rail side view of the Up buildings. Once again much of this will be hidden beneath the overall roof, but Peter has still modelled it in some detail for those occasions when I or others want to peer along the platforms despite the gloom. The building at the near end though was not under the roof, and it was indeed painted or whitewashed as Peter has portrayed it. Goodness knows why, as this was to say the least a dirty environment. It's not exactly a prepossessing bit of architecture either, so why draw the attention of passengers to it in this way? Any ideas? The booking hall from the opposite end. Finally for now a blurred overall view from the entrance to the railway room I did this without a tripod, with the camera set to three seconds delay. No wonder there is camera shake! This was not deliberate, you understand. Peter's craftsmanship speaks for itself, and really needs no words from me. That doesn't stop me expressing my grateful thanks and total admiration though. I am a very fortunate man. I shall end with a very appropriate emoticon.

Pete Harvey
Gilbert Other than seeing the canopy brackets when I received from the etchers I have been waiting with baited breath to see them on the model and they look great. Here are a couple of pictures I took before sending the etches to Gravy Train. Pete

Gravy Train
Hi Folks, Many many thanks for the kind comments received its very encourageing, I must say tho that there is still some of the finer details to be added to the buildings, especially the canopy detiling on the island platform 6 and more painting required to cut it in sharply. ther is also the arcade walling adjacent to the end of island platform 6 not to mention the weathering to tone it all down. the photos look very however on one of the shots it looks like one of the stacks on the end of the building looks bent but it isn't they are all straight as is the whole building, that said i know that Gilbert has just took a few shots quicky just to show you the progress, I am shure he will take more photos, cheers Gilbert. The idea was to have ago at the platforms today and to give the buildings to Gilbert to enjoy whilst the rest of the work carries on as opposed to them sitting on my workbench, i'm so pleased you like them Gilbert, by the way I arrived home at 11pm tonight took the wrong turning and ended up in Birmingham :-) only i could do that. cheers peter A L Edited December 20, 2011 by Gravy Train

S.A.C Martin
Now looking at this from my work computer instead of my iPhone, and I have to reiterate my use of the word "stunning". Pete's etches are magnificent too. When you think about the pieces which make up the whole, are on their own, masterpieces in their own right, the overall effect is greater. That quality of realism it has is breathtaking.
HerbertHopkins
I logged on last night and saw these fantastic buildings for the first time - wow doesn't even come close! I've just had another look, this is truly modelling of the very highest order. Congratulations to Peter for producing such stunning work, also congrats to Gilbert for being the lucky owner of such masterpieces!
