RMweb Gold Market65 Posted December 28, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 28, 2017 All this talk of Throstle's has reminded me of Throstle Nest Farm not too far from where I live. Thank you for that explanation, and if anyone can uncover the meaning behind Rickle Pits Farm, again near where I live I would be so grateful. Just sorry to go so far off the big topic of Peterborough North, and Gilbert's magnificent layout. Best regards, Rob.
RMweb Premium St Enodoc Posted December 28, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 28, 2017 If I may be so bold, I have not seen an answer for what does Throstle stand for, I believe that Throstle is another name for a Thrush??? I stand to be corrected........ Pete See post #16930.
RMweb Premium great northern Posted December 28, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 28, 2017 Did all the Iron ore trains from High Dyke only travel north Gilbert? I recall they were hauled by Rods well into the 1960's. Yes, they all went North, none through PN at all. It is one of the minor frustrations, along with the fact that any number of classes of engine got as far as New England every day from the North, but hardly ever did that last mile down to the station. That's one of the reasons why I cheat a bit.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 28, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 28, 2017 The 4.40pm Doncaster-KX is next on the Up. A six coach rake, except on Fridays when it loaded to 11, to form a SO Skegness train the next day. That formation included eight TSOs, not shown as MK1s, so I can't do that. Sun Castle is the loco today. This is not a good angle for photography, as three signals get superimposed one on top of the other, and prove impossible to deal with. Will that stop me trying it? Probably not. I know the occasional nothing happening shot is appreciated, so I just turned the camera the other way round, and took this. It does have some character, I think.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 29, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 29, 2017 Still in search of slightly different views, I tried this. That lamp spoils it somewhat though. Looking at it again though, it is otherwise quite promising. Mixing things up a bit, we'll have some more still life, this time the rear of coaching stock at platform 6, and that long rake of empties stretching into the distance. I wonder if it is possible that we might see some daylight at some stage of today. The typing of this sentence involved the use of no less than three digits.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 29, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 29, 2017 The day remained dank dreary and very dark until after 1.00pm, when suddenly everything brightened up. That meant I could take some more photos, and that in turn means I have plenty in store, and so can post another one. Much easier to compose, and to shop, so although it is a very familiar view, I shall keep returning to it. So nice outside now that I may even go for a very brisk walk.
The Blue Streak
While I was looking at You tube videos of Spams to post on Phil's topic - SOS Jct .. I happened across this little Jewel at PN, It's a few years after Gilbert's timeline but instantly recognisable as We scoot under the bridge and into the station itself. Although I think the film has been sped up a little. I hope it's of some interest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI8HCmy_6fg Regards Ted

That's where most of the detail I'm still lacking is to be seen.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 29, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 29, 2017 A different competition tomorrow. Texas scramble.- OK, shotgun start- also OK, start time 0830, not so OK. Thus your evening photos have been brought forward, in anticipation of an earlier bedtime. We have a Leicester- East local resting at Platform 2, and this one isn't a cheat, as by this time of evening pressure on the Up line had decreased sufficiently to allow it to call. then on the Down the 4.18pm from KX arrives, and will terminate. This is another duty not normally associated with Pacific haulage, but it really was a commonplace occurence.
RMweb Gold trw1089 Posted December 29, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 29, 2017 Really been enjoying these latest lot of photos Gilbert, especially some of the different angles with Sun Castle and that last one of the Standard 4. Good luck in the comp, hope the early start is not too much of a handicap! Cheers Tony
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 30, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 30, 2017 Back from golf, which was soggy but enjoyable. For the first time in what seems like ages, I have a clue. Sit down, a couple of glasses of red, and a long soak in a hot bath, so I am knackered but happy. Here is a much delayed morning photo. Time for the Up Queen of Scots with Kittiwake once again in charge.

RMweb Premium great northern Posted December 30, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2017 Sorry to be a party pooper, and perhaps I've only just noticed (duly self-admonished) but is that ground disc in the right place or is the angle of view misleading me? I may have knocked it a little askew while getting rid of the desert, Mike, but otherwise it is right. As you say, it is the angle of view that makes it look wrong. I'll see if I can find a photo that copyright will allow me to put on here.
Peter Kazmierczak
Mike, the ground disc is OK. It's operated by lever 25 at Crescent Jn. A signal diagram can be found on the https://signalbox.org site, though I can't reproduce it here for copyright reasons.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 30, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 30, 2017 As the clouds gather, 60120's driver opens the regulator, as the end of the PSR is in sight. Meanwhile the 5.20pm local from Cambridge brings a B12 under Crescent Bridge. Having got up at, for me, the unearthly hour of 0630, I shall now retire to bed.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 31, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 31, 2017 Here is a picture which defied all my attempts to put a sky onto it. For once then, you see things exactly as they are, and as the camera saw them from Crescent Bridge. If anyone would like to take up the challenge of dealing with this, they are more than welcome. It is the near identical greys in the background which are the main problem, though there are a couple of others too.

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted December 31, 2017 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted December 31, 2017 As the old year slips away, a reminder of a golden age. The last Pullman of the day is on its way to Leeds, Hull or Bradford, depending on which portion you are sitting in, and Sir Nigel Gresley seems a very appropriate loco to see the year out. Under the bridge.... and then under the roof. and to all readers of the thread, have a peaceful prosperous and productive New Year. FPH 603
Some nice shots of Sir Nigel. I saw the real thing last year in September and it was in pieces. Shame they can't get it operating anythime soon, unlike your model of it in BR green.
RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted January 1, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 1, 2018 I am considering making a resolution to avoid procrastinating. A decision may take some time. The camera lingered one more time on the Pullman. whose passengers, should they have ventilators open, will have had their nostrils assaulted as they gazed upon the vista of New England yards. The Hull fish is headed by the usual immaculate Top Shed B1.
