Well spotted Alasdair!

The drill size I used was 1.6mm although the next size up or down may look OK. After drilling the hole I carefully filed the top and bottom of it by a fraction with a small round swiss needle file as the holes on the real locos were not exactly round.

Hi Eric

The old timers look really good, and the trailer has me waiting in anticipation. With the tablet catcher on the A3, was this on Scottish engines only or more widespread. I'm just on holidays at the moment and away from my books so can't go and check it out myself.

Cheers

As far as i can remember without going into any book it was only on scottish engines for working the single line section of the east coast mainline around montrose. Im guessing anyway as it seems the only possible reason.

Not much modelling being done recently due to gardening and household work. However, during a tidy up in some free time a few weeks ago, I came across a box containing a few models built in the late 60s and decided to see if they still worked. Fortunately they did and are now kept in a more up to date box to avoid being ignored.

The A3 was originally finished out as Sir Visto but as that is already in the roster I renamed it as one of the regular visitors to Haymarket from Gateshead. It is a Wills kit with Jamieson frames plus a Jamieson tender which was the only GNR tender type available then. Along with the A3 were the Jubilee, Royal Scot and an A1. The two LMS locos are Jamieson kits with a Wills tender for the Jub. and a Wrenn tender for the Royal Scot as it already had rivet detail. From memory the lining is either Kingsprint or Kemco.

Where has the time gone?

Some splendid old-fashioned modelling evident here, Eric. My most sincere compliments.

When I look at what you've done here, it almost exactly mirrors what I was doing 30+ (?) years ago - a Wills A3 body on a set of Jamieson frames and a Jamieson tender. I actually plagiarised the Jamieson A3 frames by sweating one side to four blanks, then drilled through the bearings and cut out the shapes. I did the same with the rods, then bought more Wills' body kits (A4s as well) and more Jamieson valve gear frets/cylinders/bogies/ponies/tenders, etc. I only have one of those left now.

Jamieson Jubilees and Royal Scots as well - I used redundant Hornby-Dublo 8F tenders behind the ones I made in those days of yore; were they correct? I really don't know, nor probably cared then. They've all long-gone, too. At least you've kept yours.

Recently, I rummaged through some dusty boxes and discovered some long-forgotten kits-to-be-built. These included a pair of Jamieson V2s, a Royal Scot, B12/2, Lord Nelson, Compound and the K1/1. I've built the V2s and given the rest away to 'younger' modellers for them to practise their soldering skills.

When I look back, I'm astonished how wide the variety of loco kits were. Jamieson would produce a kit for any loco of your choice (in their hand-cut range) at a price. My A2/1 began life that way. They'd produce more than one of each (about a dozen, probably), and I used to scour the EAMES adverts to see what was on offer. That way, things like a Baltic Tank (I think it was a Furness one) could be made (for friends), a Manson G&SWR 4-4-0 and an SR Remembrance if my memory serves.

There was also the Cornucopia of the cast-kit market. I built a (Sutherland?) Highland Small Ben, a DJH Jones Goods, at least two Scottish 0-6-0s, one big, one small (which kits would these be?), a Highland River Class, a Nu-Cast kit for a K2 with a side-window cab, plus a Caley Big Pug and 0-4-4T. There were many others (who did the Glen kit?). What chance these now for Scottish modellers, especially since the RTR market looks no further north than Lancs & Yorks?

I congratulate you on your modelling down the years. Of course it's nice to be able to exploit the latest Hornby and Bachmann RTR locos (who wouldn't?), but the ones you've made which you've illustrated are much more satisfying to me. Do you have more, please?

Edited to include the Jamieson J38 (another hand-cut kit), their J39, of course and an ECJM V4 which I put together.

Many thanks Tony.

It was amazing just how many kits were available then and just as important the easiness of obtaining separate parts from kit manufacturers which was handy when making up different versions of locos. Eames of Reading, Kings Cross Models and W & H were also great sources in this regard. For the Scottish modeller there is less on offer now as a result of the loss of so many kit manufacturers.

The Glen was one of a series of North British kits produced by GEM in the 70s. I have other stuff from the 70s and 80s which are ex- Caley/LMs of locos shedded at Dalry Road which I'll try to get round to photograph. As a matter of interest Dalry Road was about 10 minutes walk from Haymarket which was very convenient. Also in the box I mentioned was a Wills A2 converted to an A1 using extra parts from Wills and Jamieson frames altered to suit. It must have been about 1972/73 when I attempted that and it was finished off in BR blue, it still runs!

Regarding the A3s fitted with tablet catchers. They were required for the single line section of the ECML between Usan and Montrose South. The locos fitted were based at Dundee and Aberdeen for a short time and were Merry Hampton, Ladas, Sir Visto, William Whitelaw (later renamedTagalie),Spearmint and Cicero. The three transferred to England had the holes plated over but the other three remaining up here ran with the hole in the cab side to the bitter end.

Hi Eric

I missed that detail when I changed a Hornby A3 to 60101 Cicero some time ago, I will have to get some reference photos out to see what is required.

Those photos of your just get better and better, in Spain at the moment on a weeks holiday staying with my sister who lives here.

Lovely hot weather but looking forward to cracking on with the Haymarket buildings when we get back.

A trip to Eileen's Emporium is in order to get some 500mm lengths of 2.5mm X 1.25mm brass hollow half tube for guttering along with many other metal and plastic sections.

Regards

David

As two thirds of the locomotives allocated to Haymarket were named and about two fifths were Pacifics the photographs reflect that wonderful combination.

Unfortunately there are no V2s as I only have two, a Nu-Cast kit and a Bachmann, both of which are finished off as a 64A locos whilst the two Jamieson kit built ones were sold decades ago. Sadly the Bachmann model is just not up to standard, hopefully that will soon not be the case.

A beautiful selection of photographs there Eric, with both esteemed and workaday subjects. I think the clean A3 pacifics would be my favourites, followed by the Peppercorn A2s, wish there were more of them down Yorkshire way but Happy Knight was the only real regular on the Leeds line.

Cheers

Hello.

Can you advise of the source of your station platform lamps?

Thanks,

These were made by Mikes Models of Swindon. I purchased them about 35 years ago when I did not have a layout and was only building loco kits. I do not know what happened to the manufacturer. He also made other fittings such as water columns/towers and buffers for different railway companies. The water columns (ex-N.B.R.) in the engine shed on the layout

are some of his as well.

Hope that this helps.

Thought they might be.

Struck how the lamp support is similar to this example at Bo'ness:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/93910018@N02/20056308262/in/album-72157632955037741/

Don't seem to be currently in production as Mike's Models - will just have to look out for second hand ones!

Cheers,

Just to say that,  despite the apparent lack of a "like" button,  I hugely enjoyed your gallery of non-Edinburgh-based locomotives (not to mention the subsequent galleries,  which DO allow for "liking").  An enormous exercise in nostalgia:  many of the larger ones were old friends,  from watching the locomotive changeover at Waverley on the southbound Aberdeen fish train (a regular spectacle on the homeward journey from school).  I was fortunate,  during a short trip to Edinburgh from the distant south,  to catch a glimpse from a North Berwick train of No 9 preparing to set off for Tweedbank,  so I am the more grateful for your record of that occasion.

There has not been much free time of late for taking photographs as I have used the railway modelling time for bashing on with some loco kit building which cannot be hurried but progress is being made with a J35 and a J38 now available for running on the layout.

However, here are some views taken during the year, showing trains typically seen in the area pulled by locos from 64A and 64B plus a few occasional visitors. Some of the photos are grouped to feature a second view of the same train further along the line for a bit of variety.

This is wonderful stuff, Eric.

Has anyone else captured the flavour of ER/NER/ScR motive power so well? I think not.

Hello Eric,

Wonderful and evocative layout.I am just finishing a PDK D30 Scot and yours caught my eye. Is The Pirate lettering a transfer and if so what is the source? I am hoping to call mine Wandering Willie. My layout is set around Newcastle 1948-55 with the occasional incursion of ex-NB types!

You will be able to get some D30 Scott name transfers from Modelmaster in Troon Ayrshire. They have details on their website.

The relative transfer pack numbers are 4007A and 4008B. Number 4007A has Wandering Willie which is a bit of good luck for you as not all members of the class are included!

The Pirate was a case in poin,t so it was a matter of cutting out suitable individual letters, or a small grouping, to make them up. It works OK but obviously takes longer but well worth the effort. It is better to order both packs for that reason as it gives you more options for cutting out.

It was some time ago that I purchased them so perhaps there may be more names added now. In addition these packs include some D34 and Director names. As a matter of interest the names for for the Directors are now in a new series of packs for all members of that class.

Hope that this helps.

Eric

Thanks Eric,

I thought Modelmaster might do them but I could not find them in their catalogue. I did a search on 4007A and B with no result.I'll give them a call to see if they can do a special order.

I just had this topic popping up my screen today, lots of nice pics on here.

Is the K2 the old Nu-cast kit?

And the J37? I don't know any manufacturer who did that in the past, but I'm relatively new in British/Scottish modeling. (I only found out that NBR developments does a chassis kit for this loco)

Just started putting some parts of a PDK J36 togheter, to see which High Level gearbox and motor will fit in without protuding into the cab or taking the daylight under the boiler away, but more on that later inn my own topics

The K2 is the Nu-Cast kit from the 70s, still going strong!

The J37 is from the same era from Norrie Blackburn, unfortunately they have not been available for many years. Norrie also produced C16, N15 and J88 kits as well.

I am building a Crownline J36 (now PDK) just now and will be using the High Level Roadrunner Compact gearbox. I used it on a DJH J35 last year and it is a good runner like all the High Level gearboxes.

Hope that this helps.

Eric
