GW Models wheel press and quartering jig

Recommended Posts

I have always wondered how I ever managed without one, although a great fan of the GW rivet press I just cannot see why I need a quartering jig when my mark 1 eye seems to be able to tell me pretty well what is 90°

PS a corner of a business card can also be used as a visual clue, the human eye is quite good at seeing if things are out of alignment or not straight. Besides I seem to always have wheels on/off when all the brake gubbins are in place.

There are eye complaints that actually prevent you from seeing straight lines easily, although the brain often does a wonderful job of compensating.  So, for some people with aging eyes I think the quartering function is likely very useful.  You can check how good your eyes are at looking at straight lines by using an "Amsler grid".  You have to look at the grid with each eye.  If you use both eyes your brain may have compensated and you won't see wiggles.  Just looking at a spreadsheet grid on a good computer screen can show this up too.

Thanks for that. There's no way I can get to Aylesbury, so I'll send him a postcard!

George usually has an ad in Model Railway Journal which quotes prices and postage in UK, and also most importantly his address in Lancing, West Sussex to which to send your cheque to. He doesn't do online sales, just mail order (cheque payments only) and some of the more specialised shows (cash). No electronic payments such as PayPal or credit/debit cards.

I've got the big'un, it wasn't that price when I bought it. So far it does more than I've needed, but it's best to have one that does everything, so as not to have to replace when something it can't do comes up.

IMHO.

I hate to drag old threads up but saves starting a new one - does anyone know if GW Models is still supplying? I've tried calling a few times at different times of day with no answer. Would like to spend some money!

Thanks

George Watts should be at Scaleforum Stoke Mandeville on 23rd/24th September, as he usually trades at this show.

I have one the "buttons" which the axles fit into appeared to be jammed , I presume they should push inwards when the wheels are pressed on the axles ? Any suggestions for a cure please.

Spray some Plusgas penetrating oil (NOT WD40!) on it, wait a few minutes and then tap the plunger "in" with a small hammer to free it up.

Because it is a water repellent, lubricating spray and not actually a dedicated penetrating oil like Plusgas. Pg works much better for unsticking things.

I agree with all of that but whereas many people will have WD40 to hand, how many have plusgas?

Slightly off topic, but as its relevant to GW Models, here seems to be a sensible enough place!

In the advert on the current MRJ, it mentions a 6" and 10" mini roller, I presume this is a boiler rolling tool?

If anyone can shed any light, I'd be most grateful!

Cheers

J

Edited to sort out an autocorrect faux pas!
