Popular Post AndyID
A guy who is doing work for a neighbor noticed I had replaced the "brush hog" on the tractor with the new(ish) finish mower. Popular Post Florence Locomotive Works
Evening all, A few things happened today. Firstly the sound system quit again, so that will need looking at. Accompanied my dad to look at some fiberglass bumpers for something. And I’ve realized that I’ll need I to make a condenser for my small Stuart live steam plant, (Viewable here). Well I more want one than need it, as I’m really quite sick of cleaning up oil and water and God knows what else that spews forth from such things. So at some point I’ll get round to making it, probably from copper and brass. The hawks wouldn’t be quiet today, I’m guessing it’s mating season.
Popular Post pH
We got the sad news today that an ex-neighbour of ours died this morning, at the age of 101. She drove, with annual health checks, till she decided herself to give up her licence at age 90 plus, lived in her own house till about 95, and sang in the choir of her retirement home in every concert they put on. She was born in London and moved to Canada in the early 1950s, built a house with her carpenter husband and moved and renovated another. She didn’t have too easy a life, having to bury two husbands and two sons, but was always upbeat and interested in life around her. A real inspiration, we will miss her in our lives. 1

Popular Post AndyID
Incidentally some of the wheels on the new(ish) finish mower were in a rather sad state. I've done some remedial work with the lathe but it could really use a new set of wheels. The mower is sold by John Deere although I'm pretty sure it's imported, possibly from Europe. One replacement wheel costs more than $100 !!! I've found some alternative wheels on the interweby. Four for $93 although I will have to make some bushes for them (on my 1935 South Bend Lathe for which I paid the princely sum of $60 ) 20 1

Everyone remembers Icarus, but do they remember the poor sod who tried to save him? Like hell they do. And after all I did to try and save him: cupping, trepanning, bleeding, unguents and reading the entrails, did I get a mention in the scrolls? Like ***** I did, not even in a footnote (AND I still haven’t been paid for the liver divination and a quality ram doesn’t come cheap...) Sometimes I wonder why I bother, I really do. Popular Post chrisf
Greetings one and all If I may add my two penn’orth on printers, I find it irritating that mine, made by Epson, refuses to print in black if one of the colour cartridges needs replacing. Yesterday evening it excelled itself when both the yellow and magenta cartridges emptied despite my not being conscious of any colour element in the document that I wanted to print. I got cross with other technology yesterday too. As some know, I run a photo charters diary with a mailing list of sixty-something souls. In an ideal world I would send the e-mails to everyone at once but with BT Mail there is no such thing as an ideal world. Splitting the list into three groups of 22 usually works but once in a while the odd one gets bounced back for no apparent reason and I have to re-send it to the individual. Then you get the odd gormless clown who does not realise that you need to click on the red envelope icon to read the attachment. To get both on one day just isn’t fair. I must say that I am heartened by the interest aroused by my plans to visit Nice. They are still only a feasibility study but it is clear that it is feasible. I am probably the world’s worst tourist but thanks to you nice people I have plenty of ideas for when it happens – which it will. Mind you, I said that about Dublin … I need something for Sunday lunch so the relief fodder run will operate today. It gets me out of the house but there are other drawbacks, such as not knowing where anything is in a different supermarket. I may be some time. Best wishes to all Chris 4

RMweb Premium Popular Post jamie92208 Posted June 13, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 13, 2020 Good moaning. It's not very warm here, though the sun lamp has just been switched on. There may not be many shillings in the meter looking south westwards. Well the decorator did return, with two surly young mates and the rest of the hall did get painted. I did pay him. Beth went out leaving me, as her semi tame rottweiler to supervise. At one point the inane chatter got too much so the vinyl came out and Who's Next got played at volume. It cheered me up whethervthe surly youngsters appreciated I care not in the slightest. As they were going I saw that they were taking a large binliner of rubbish with them. I took it off them and said I'd put it in the bin for them. A good phone call to North Hipposhire then ensued and after that I went to the shed, set some scanning off and sanded down some latts for the garden bench. When Beth returned we investigated the bin bag and found 5 of our dust sheets in it together with all their paint rollers and brushes and the tin of paint used forvthe doors in the passage that I'd been told was empty. Plenty of paint in it to keep for touching up in due course. After that we set off for a quiz and had a great evening with 4 friends whilst enjoying a meal. We even managed to come second, out of 4 teams. Not a lot on the agenda today but more latts may be sanded and negatives scanned. Regards to all. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted June 13, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 13, 2020 (edited) Just to mention wartime memories, I never knew my grandparents and three of them died before WW2. However my mother, born in 1912, remembered her mother being reprimanded by the village bobby in Alston, for breaching the blackout. This was terrible as my Grandad was the Methodist Minister and it was felt to be a very poor do for his wife to breach the regulations. Jamie. RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted June 13, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted June 13, 2020 (edited) Good morning all, There is some blue sky amongst the clouds and it will hopefully be a dry day. I say hopefully because we intend to be in the garden later with kids and grandkids celebrating Gemma's 16th birthday and our Golden Wedding Anniversary. Can't believe she's now only 16! (Actually only 15 in pic) Also can't believe this was 50 years ago: Needless to say the celebrations that were were planned have been cancelled but we still intend to enjoy ourselves today. Must go, lots to do. Have a good one, Bob. Edited June 13, 2020 by grandadbob

RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted June 13, 2020 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 13, 2020 Mooring Awl inner Temple Hare, 4 hours plus 3 hours that's a bit better sleep. Ben the demanding Collie, wanted out this morning, the garden was well watered... The sky is blue, the grass was wet before Ben went out. I'd love that lathe, I wonder how many perfectly good lathes were scrapped without offering them for sale.. SWMBo had passed me her digital watch given to her when she was 17, it's been sitting in a box for years. She wants me to find new batteries for it. It says 104125 or 106125 or 108125 Duracell, which I haven't been able to find even on Duracell cross-reference sites.. Plans for today, put the front on a raised bed, so it can be filled with leaf mold . Melt some lead. Time to drink a Muggacoffee.. 17
Popular Post 5 C
Morning awl from sunny Bedfordshire. This week I ventured further from my house than I have done in three months, albeit only to the other side of town. I was in the office to inspect the social distancing measures put in place for an eventual return - whenever that may be. In many respects it felt no different to being there late or at a weekend. Coats and bags still in place and many things as people left them. The challenge was following the one-way system and not taking habitual routes. That and wearing a mask - spectacle fogging is a definite pain. Strange to see the airport too, with plenty of aircraft parked up (mainly Easyjet) but not a lot else happening. The unwelcome visitor from the other week has made a return, although this time it chose my neighbour's house to run round. We're in a row of five and we're unsure to what extent there are clear runs between the houses. A trip into the loft this morning to have a look along the soffits, although some of the gaps in the mortar in the solid wall wouldn't pose much of an obstacle. An article on the BBC website earlier this week reported on an increase in domestic rodent infestations during lockdown. With shops and restaurants closed, the usual sources of food have disappeared forcing them to roam wider. Wildlife in general seems to be bolder and less perturbed by human activity of late. An order of spares turned up a few days ago, meaning I can progress a few projects of the parallel strips of metal variety. If the weather stays fine, I may even attempt some of the G word to keep things tidy. And I really need more eyelid inspection than I have managed in the last couple of weeks. Regards to awl.
