RMweb Premium The White Rabbit Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 29, 2021 Good afternoon all, What a change in the weather! (Where are my beach shorts?) I think the Clerk of the Weather's made a boo-boo, this is not normal for a Bank Holiday in England... It's been a week of lurking, either haven't been able to post or thought it better not to in case I say something I regret. I was sorry to hear about @The Q's relatives' health problems. Some positive news for @Dave Hunt but it sounds like hard work. I'm always reluctant to offer advice, it can go wrong so easily, but would suggest no-one in that sort of situation lets the medical people bully them into actions or decisions they do not wish to take. Some of my current problems are due to NHS personnel not listening to me and from both my experience and that of some in my circle, very often the medical people deliberately put relatives under pressure before presenting them with decisions in the hope of a certain choice being made. Positive thoughts to other ERs with problems, I hope you can fix or at least improve them asap. The garden has suddenly burst into life. With sunshine, showers and now the BH heatwave, many plants are enjoying a growth spurt. Sadly, that includes the weeds... with two gardens to look after I am now on first name terms with the blokes at the local tip and am being invited to apply for my own dedicated parking space. Cheque payable to Chris Arthur Sam Harris. I wish he'd buy some of the STR furniture and books I have. Spent the morning sorting out some of this, it's coming in faster than it's going out. The cat's sulking, I have had to unhook it's swing. We had an earthquake a few years ago, I was doing something we must not mention and there was a rumble and the desk shook a bit. Thought it was a big (and lost) lorry going past the end of the road but when I saw the news later, I realised I had a new excuse for iffy paintwork... 12 2
leopardml2341
Aft'noon, Completely random quote (which I never used) in the editor, makes you wonder who's watching what/who? Anyway, planned doings done. Time for a shower then, as it's brightened up somewhat, pub beer garden beckons. Might not check back later as a consequence :) 12 4
RMweb Premium Popular Post southern42 Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 29, 2021 ' afternoon all from red dragon land. Dry - I know - I put the washing out. Best bring it in soon. Mother's Day plant repotted into something bigger - from china wellies to a cane basket - previous contents overwatered and died. Toot on the flute went well and not so well, but well enough to decide to buy Man of Law so that I have the next two pages to work out the rest of the piece for my fife. Mugadecaf time - catchup later. Fitt and Elfie showing promise. Take care all and play safe. _________ Best wishes Polly 18
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 29, 2021 A'noon. Had a couple of good friends around for , you know, vapour powered things in the garden, BQ, and chat. One friend brought his wife who hadn't been here before, as she didn't want to be left at home but she was worried about it being a boring boy-fest - she had a great day and professed to having really enjoyed watching the trains (and yakking with Mrs NHN of course). Result. 20c all day too, this is like Saharan temperatures to a Fraggle. 3rd result! Mrs NHN also had her first go at cooking on the BBQ as she usually makes me do it, and that also went well - another result! I'd post a photos but......our overlords watch.....

RMweb Premium Popular Post polybear Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 29, 2021 A Good Day for Bear First use of the Trimmer proved successful - though they do have a real capability to bite back if you're not on the ball. So remaining corner unit hidden side panel fitted, followed by some extra fixings between the two corner units and adjacent units (not even an earthquake will shake those bvggers now...) and a worktop support bar secured to the wall behind the oven base unit. Another session of using the Trimmer this afternoon, this time to cut two 19mm x 19mm slots in the sides of the two base units that stand either side of the washing machine. This is to accommodate a square aluminium tube (3mm wall thickness - so very strong); the tube fits in the slots (which are in the top edges of the sides, close to the front panels). This creates a support bar across the 620mm wide gap where the washing machine stands, providing support for the front underside of the granite worktop. A wooden batten screwed to the wall does the same job for the rear underside of the worktop. Bearing in mind the granite will be 30mm thick it's probably complete overkill - but I'd rather do the job than be faced with a situation where I'm staring at a cracked worktop, whilst thinking "b*llox - I really, really wish I'd put some added support underneath....". This section of worktop probably sees the most action "up top" than any other. Bear may even get to fit the new oven tomorrow, as I've pretty much run out of excuses not to... 20
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 29, 2021 Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. Having mentioned the lack of pollinating insects this morning they turned up for the afternoon shift. At least two different varieties of bee and a couple of butterflies and more arriving by the minute. Cold dinner again tonight, quiche and salad, just can't be @r$d to even switch the microwave on. Kettle is on for tea so it's be back later. 16
RMweb Gold Popular Post The Stationmaster Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted May 29, 2021 Evening all, The Editor is becoming distinctly boring - maybe g he likes commebts about L&Y tank egnes or Blackpool but he keeps coming up with teh saem one - weird. Lawn mowning slightly deferred due to precipitaion yesterday afternoon/evening but the ;lad has now volunteered to do it on monday so that should work out well if the latest bits of swaeweed recovered from the Exe estuary are to be believed. ah, the glory days of the dept of railways at Marsham St p before privvystisation. They used to be a very small dept but the bloke at the head of the real office - i.e. well below Miinsterial and Senior Chair Polisher rank had an excellent reputation within BR and was extremely helpful ro the industry. shame I can't remember his name. Even after my employer became a GoCo (Govt Company) responding directly to the Ministry, in 1994 their touch was extremely light to say the very least - which is a lot more than can be said of some of the halfwits involved in our first privatisation including some of their dim witted (and in one case expenses fiddling) placemen and women. Branson's lot came as no real surprise - loads of surface gloss and not much underneath that and of course his own ignorance came as no surprise at all. The thing that did surprise me about a lot of that was that those who had risen to prominence in the 'bus industry and were allegedly hard financial task masters seemed to have very limited understanding of the way in which cost control was exercised in the railway world to the extent that they happily accepted proposals from the staff which made us less efficient and increased our cost per train mile - very odd. thus our operational costs took a step backwards from what had been achieved under BR control In the light of the management's return scheduled for tomorrow various domestic cleaning has taken place and two loads of washing have been processed. Great to hear much more positive news about Dave's dad even if it took an expedition with difficulties on a par with a journey to the Orinoco in order for that to be discovered - fingers croosed taht things will now go much more positively for Dave and the family - even in respect of making visits. Have a good evening folks and stay safe. 18 1
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 29, 2021 Afternoon Awl, well Evening Awl really. Tiles re affixed in the mobile home, but that section of wall is full on crossroads motel style, really wobbly. rebuilding it is added to the todo list. Then to mowing, during which SWMBO turned up saying the brother would be late. So instead of 10:00, it was 13:30 ish they arrived.. So more mowing was done and then .. The lifting bracket was ground smoothish , and tried.. Boat hung "on the Huh" .. very tilted, that is, if you don't speak Norfolk.. That puzzled me for while, till I realised I'd made the main lifting point centre top of the bracket...not over the balance point, which was 2 inches aft of that. Luckily there was enough "meat" left in the bracket to allow a correctly placed hole to be drilled. The bracket now lifts level. So when I have time, I now know where I can remove more metal on the bracket to reduce weight. So boat lifted, and the last of the support frame removed, 3 of the 4 remaining large screws came undone at first time of asking, after all these years that was a miracle. Boat was lowered into foam on breeze blocks, both on the hull and under the keel. More of the sealant had over time, squeezed out from twixt hull and keel. This took some effort to cut off with a craft knife. It had set to a rubbery solid. While doing that back said enough, because of the awkward position I was sitting.. I completed the task sitting on a foundation block, which was much more comfortable I'll remember that for further work. We spent the afternoon sitting in the sun chatting to the visitors, they insisted on buying us takeaway meals. So various very nice currys were consumed by us... I'm now straightening my back on the bed.. Goodnight Awl.
RMweb Premium polybear Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 29, 2021 A friend of Bear's reported that she'd put a frozen lemon meringue in the oven for half an hour, but when it came out it didn't look right. Bear asks "what did the cooking instructions on the packet say?". "There weren't any" came the reply. There's a clue there....Seems the birds liked it She also discovered a leaking flexi tap connector in her bathroom today - fortunately it had only just started. It prompted Bear to check if I have any flexi connectors in the upstairs loo; two discovered - cold tap and cistern. Buggerritt - they'll probably be 20-ish years old too. I've set a reminder to replace them just as soon as possible (they're above the kitchen ceiling...) - the cold tap can be swapped for rigid copper without too much hassle, but i suspect the cistern feed may well have to stay as flexi - we'll see. I've just ordered three water leak alarms for the kitchen - under the dishwasher, the sink and adjacent to the washing machine. I think I'll be adding two more for the upstairs loo..... 16

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted May 29, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 29, 2021 Evening all from Estuary-Land. Quiet evening, I gather there's 22 blokes kicking an inflated bladder around somewhere. Just ordered some more diecast models from Hong Kong. At the moment the exchange rate is very good. Usually its about HK$9 = £1 but at the moment its HK$10:50 = £1. Thats a big chunk out of the VAT that will have to be paid. 12

tigerburnie
Had a great family day with grandkids in 19 degrees of heat in Perth, when we got back to the coast a thick fog was hanging over the village and it was 10 degrees cooler, bonkers.
