@TheQ, @Dave Hunt, @simontaylor484, @grandadbob@Coombe Barton - you poor bu99ers.

I really am so spoilt here in Switzerland. I am but a 5 minute walk away from a tram line which runs trams - punctually - every 7 minutes (Monday - Saturday) or 10 minutes (Sundays and public holidays). Trams run from about 04:50 to 23:50 (officially the service starts at 00:07 - but that includes a few night trams). To get to the orthopaedic clinic - which is a bit off the beaten track - I have to change to a BLT microbus - which runs punctually every 30 minutes (06:13 - 19:43 except Sunday - when it's 09:13 - 19:43 - pretty much matching clinic visiting hours). Then of course I have the SBB to travel on, not to mention DB, SNCF, TreniItalia, MGB, etc. Nor should I forget the Postbus or the Lake Steamers (although they're not steamers any longer - except for one or two preserved ones)

You might find the following interesting: https://www.blt.ch/ and if your German is a bit rusty - this will help: https://www.deepl.com/translator

My nephew and his partner who live in Zurich are seriously thinking about selling their car. If they need one they can hire one, often at a railway station.

In my part of the Boring Borough, the public transport is not bad. There are bus routes Bromley- Bexleyheath, Orpington to Plumstead/Woolwich, Queen Mary's Hospital to the Cutty Sark, Swanley to Eltham, Sidcup station to Bluewater, Foot's Cray Tesco to New Cross Gate (via Lewisham) Queen Mary's to Thamesmead, Queen Mary's to Green Street Green, Orpington to Bexleyheath via Queen Mary's. Rick can probably tell you the numbers without thinking but for any of you that like that sort of thing, that's 269, 51, 286, 233, 492, 321, R11, B14. Frequency is generally around 1 every 10 -15 minutes, the 492, a little less often. The 321 is a 24 hour service.

Trains are on the Dartford loop line, 6 or 7 an hour each way in the rush but down to 4 an hour off peak (2 Charing Cross, 2 Cannon Street). The Cannon Street trains are generally rounders, heading back up the North Kent line and the others go to Dartford or Gravesend.

Hospitals however... Queen Mary's has lost its A&E but has a cancer specialist place, and has or had a branch of Moorfields eye hospital. Both Lurker boys were born there but maternity services ceased pretty soon after Younger Lurker arrived. It has long since ceased to be a pioneering place for plastic surgery....

But all in all, pretty well served which is the advantage of not being in the sticks.

Talking of hospitals I've got to go to Epsom next Monday for therapy on my hand.  I'm a bit peeved that this can't be done at the local hospital.  It's about 25 minutes to Epsom by car but I'm not allowed to drive at the moment and none of my nearby friends & family are available to take me because they're either at work or on holiday so that means a 10 minute walk and about 40 minutes by bus or I could get a cab which will cost £16 each way.

Bob

I'm pretty sure that it is still running - the NHS put on a bus service, the H1, which runs between St Helier Hospital and Epsom Hospital, available for public as well as staff. Fare is £1.50, free for pensioners after 9:30.  Buses run roughly every 40 minutes and the journey takes just under an hour. Roughly the same time as your trip, but depends how close you are to St Helier in the first place.

BIN day. We've had a procession/parade that would give any 4th of July parade a run for its money today!!

Life continued quietly again yesterday, but we DID make the excursion to the Polish butcher/baker at lunch time, resulting in bangers and mash for dinner - YAY! 😃

Today, again planning on "quiet", work is fairly slow, which is fine by me.

Our "handyman" will be over this afternoon to do a few tasks I'm not wanting/inclined to undertake, that'll be about it.

Weather continues to be "fairly nice", though warming up some. Moderate rain overnight, but 21 and humid first thing. forecast to reach 32 later and more rain due.

Carry on.

@Nick Holliday  Thanks Nick but St. Helier is a good 30 minute walk* for me so I can get the 293 from Garth Rd/Stonecot Hill which is about a 10 minute walk away.

* And a lot of that is uphill 🥵

Sorry. Thought you might live “my” side of the A217.  The H1 is supposed to stop at Tesco on the way, if that’s any better.

The B14 is a rarer beast scheduled every half-hour (hourly on Sundays) making it one of London’s least-frequent routes.  There is a selection of all-night buses should you feel a need to travel in the wee small hours. N21 and N89 in addition to the 321 are among London’s nocturnal network. Still only £1.65 any trip (unless you are entitled to free travel) with the N89 being London’s longest route plying between Trafalgar Square and Slade Green.

I haven't been to the cinema in over thirty years. The film was 'Love story', not my choice but my then girlfriend insisted on it. She then proceeded to sob through most of the film. They don't make weepies like that any more, thankfully.

These days (based on advertising for Thor: Love and Thunder, which opens a week from now) they're more about how much Hemsworth bottom will appear on screen. (A lot apparently, from late night television interviews.)

If I want to watch a film I only need to wait a couple of years before its shown on TV anyway.

Far quicker than that on streaming services - only a few weeks.

I used to enjoy going to the cinema but these days, I'd rather just wait until the movie is available to stream. Sticky floors, extreme cost, asshats on their phones, etc. It has just become an unpleasant experience.

Which is why I like Wednesday matinee showings. Priced less and there is almost no one* there - also important to me in these pandemic times.

* Fewer than 10 in yesterday's showing, and seven of those were from the earlier (abandoned) showing.

Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. No sign of the foxes today or yesterday for that matter though there is evidence of some of the cubs 'toys' being moved about. There is also an ants nest were it appears they have been digging. I exposed another ants nest when I moved a couple of old bricks, I went indoors and before long some young blackbirds were feasting on the grubs.

Warnings are being put out about monkey pox re. this weekends London Pride event. I'm sure Chris F is well aware of the warnings and will be taking precautions (face mask etc.)

La Nina is still out there, apparently!

The little girl appears to have been put abed for the season here - if last weekend's hot weather is a guide. This week has been quite lovely - morning cloud moderating sunny afternoon temperatures. The fourthcoming* holiday weekend might be slightly iffy for some drizzle (it's more likely to be cloudy and dry) but it may not rain again until September.

* intentional (groanworthy) pun

I will get round to streaming the rest of it at some point at least I haven't paid for it

I definitely have.  It is inked in on the route map of bus routes I have travelled on.  The map is almost all inked these days with very few roads "uncranked" but I do need a return visit to the B14 because it has numerous one-way sections.

In a previous lifetime (it seems) I mis-spent some of my student days chasing the old RT buses on various routes in that area of which the 51 and 229 were two lengthy ones.  Both had occasional trips from the Orpington direction to "Sidcup Garage via Ruxley Corner" because the right turn in Foots Cray which would have been required to reach the garage had line of route been followed was not permitted - and still isn't.  Somewhere I still have some unexciting images of those buses one or two with "Farewell" boards from the final day inside the lower saloon nearside windscreen above the bonnet.

It was possible at one time to board a 51 in Woolwich and travel to Orpington (which wasn't always the end - they ran on to Farnborough with extensions to Bromley Garage or Hayes at times) before returning on a 229.  If one hopped off that in Bexleyheath one could pick up a 122 all the way to Crystal Palace!  Bus routes don't come that long these days.  I also managed to ride the last Routemaster-worked 51 from Hayes a couple of years later.  That was a curious extension with just two mid-evening trips.  The bus came into Farnborough from Woolwich, waited 15 minutes, ran to Hayes and back then into Sidcup Garage (via Ruxley Corner of course).  The second trip came from Sidcup iirc running straight through to Hayes then back to Woolwich.  Odd.

Our railway station closed in 1931.

In order for me to get to work I'd have to start to take a bus in the opposite direction, then get a train

However if I wanted to get to work on time I'd have to leave before I'd got home the previous night.

And would home be an ‘ ‘ole in road’ ?
