Quite common in the northwest. Even with my quite wide angle on my telephone, I have to use the panorama feature to capture a full rainbow. Here's a clip of one from September - the second rainbow was not very bright. The smudges were raindrops. No rainbows here today. It did not rain, but the morning fog, which was moderately heavy lifted a little but never dissipated into a clear sky. Rain is forecast for Tuesday. pH
1 hour ago, Ozexpatriate said: A "double rainbow". (Quite visible in the top right corner.) Quite common in the northwest. No - I wasn’t referring to that higher and quite separate ‘bow’. If you look at the main low down ‘bow’ (and I admit it doesn’t show up clearly) you may be able to see that it actually includes a complete arc (roygbiv top to bottom) above and a partial arc (gbiv?) below that. I’ll try to blow up part of the picture to show it a bit more clearly. Edit - try this. You may be able to see two violet bands at the bottom of the bow. The second, lower band is very faint. It was more distinct in “real life”. Edited January 1 by pH
RMweb Premium zarniwhoop Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1 Now that I've finished watching my recordings of the fireworks on sky news, and then CNBU on BBC Alba (from Govan), I'm winding down and my house is at last quiet. Popular Post pH
Having been suffering from a lurgy (not covid) for several days and not sleeping well as a result, we have decided that we will not be staying up till the bells. It will still be 2024 tomorrow whether we do or not. In the meantime, 2023 can see itself out. 1 1
iL Dottore
A Happy New Year to All, Yesterday I spent the countdown to midnight alone as Mrs iD had decamped with the doggies to her cousins place due to selfish morons (other terms are available) already setting off explosive fireworks on the 30th - reducing Schotty (and other pets I’m sure) to a bundle of anxiety. Mrs iD’s cousins’ house has triple glazed windows and with a roomy and heated cellar, provides a refuge for both Schotty and Lucy where they can’t hear the explosions. It’s just as well Mrs iD and The Wolfpack relocated; after dropping them off I returned home and fell asleep in front of the TV, only to be awoken by what sounded like an artillery barrage - which went on for quite a bit. After which I dozed off only to be awoken again at about 02:00 by the local cretinous yoof throwing bangers around. Pleasurable but evil thoughts of bangers, whizz-bangers and crackers becoming adhesive when lit - sticking to the would be thrower’s hands - lulled me off to sleep before I awakened at my usual time of 06:00 or so. So, to paraphrase The Who’s great song <Won’t Get Fooled Again>: ”Here’s to the new year, same as the old year”
BachelorBoy
I do love the serendipity of the internet ... when looking for one thing, you find something completely different. but nevertheless very interesting. Before there was Design Clever, it appears there was Hornby Clever Cook. (I have to say the skewiff Hornby sticker does look like it may be a later addition to a non-Hornby product) Edited January 1 by BachelorBoy clarified sticker comment 11 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 1 Mooring Awl, Still attached to moorings although it's a hooley out there, no rainbows though, it's 100% blue skies. Our first fireworks heard were around 21:00, SWMBO stayed with Ben till around 12:30 when it when quiet, I came down just after 01:00 the last i heard was about 01:55. The fireworks, nearest launch site is about a mile across the fields, but seem loud, against our normally quiet nights. Ben the insistent Collie wanted out, so we've had a good patrol. Going into places he normally doesn't nose up in the air having picked up a scent. It was coming from our north western boundary, which he went up to but didn't cross as he knows he's not allowed. Cold gusty hooley at the moment, westerly with hints of north, 100% blue Welkin. The seaweed inspectors say this will continue for today and tomorrow, rising to over 60mph winds tomorrow night. Plans for today, Wake up the fire. More work on the rudder, More work on the upstairs unmentionable.
RMweb Premium Popular Post Barry O Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 1 WHITE RABBITS! Happy New Year! We watched the London Fireworks on TV. Seemed very impressive. Too much food (some excellent home made tappas)snd too much wine (Champagne and Red Wine) were consumed in a very convivial atmosphere. I would like to offer my hopes of good health to all ERs with as much prosperity as can make your life comfortable. Baz 12
RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted January 1 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 1 (edited) Good morning all, Some blue sky has appeared and it should be bright and dry for a while. After lunch it will become cloudier with spells of rain becoming heavier towards the evening. 6°C rosing to 10°C. Multiple barrages around here between 11.30 and 01.00 and I could still hear stuff in the distance at 02.30. The Boss went to bed about 11.30 but I stayed up until 01.15 but was watching some recorded TV, couldn't be bothered with the "celebrations" although I did have a couple of tots of cognac. Only been up for about 15 minutes and about to get my second muggatea. After that I better have a shave and hose myself down before breakfast. Eggs and bacon today as I missed out yesterday due to feeling rather fragile. The Boss is already talking about removing decorations but as I'm the one who has to climb up into the loft to retrieve all the storage boxes that can wait for another day or two. Timetogettamoveon. Have a good one, Bob. Edited January 1 by grandadbob speelink 18

RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted January 1 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 1 Happy New Year to everyone. I had a peaceful evening watching TV and reading. I intended watching Die Fledermaus on a German TV channel but it was going to finish too late for me so I found an old recording on YouTube which I enjoyed. Later I watched a bit of the one on TV, it was enjoyable but in modern dress. I also watched "Dinner for One" with Freddie Frinton and May Warden, again on German TV. Then I watched part of an Andre Rieu concert. About 11p.m. there were a few fireworks, at midnight it was very quiet, no fireworks, no ships hooters, no people making a noise so I went to bed and slept well. Each year here it seems to become quieter. So far today I've been out for a quick walk and met a couple of neighbours, we wished each other a Happy New Year. It's a big contrast to when I was a teenager, several familes met up, we teens used to try to be a pop group, we were hopeless. Later in the evenings our parents used tostart, Dad was good on drums, Mum on piano, the other parents on guitars and singing - now they were quite good. In later years I used to go to friends, we played Mah Jong into the early hours. Now I am content to be at home. The rest of today will be peaceful, I've just put the New Year's Day concert on TV from Viennna, I'll have a good lunch - a simplified version of Christmas Dinner and then I'll probably read this afternoon. I have a New Years resolution - to actually get rid of all the things I don't want/need instead of thinking about it. Lastly I notice that uploading photos to RMWeb seems to be working properly again today. David
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 1 Good morning everyone Like many others, it was like a barrage on the Somme last night after midnight, the rockets etc lasted until almost 12:30, at that point it all went quiet and sleep became a real possibility. Today we have awoken to not just a new year, but blue skies and no clouds. Sheila is still in here ‘get everything done’ mode and so I’ve been asked to assist in cleaning areas that she can’t reach easily etc. I’ve also been tasked with vacuuming the hall, stairs and landings, which is a job Sheila hates to do. With 2 landings, 3 half landings and 32 stairs, it will probably take me about an hour to complete, but at the same time I’ll earn several brownie points as well. Must get a move on. Back later. RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted January 1 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 1 And She's off!! Christmas cards are already being taken down, these will be cut up to be used as gift tags for next year's presents. I have already stated that I will not be climbing into the loft today....I have a new book to look at. 3

RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1 No double rainbows here but this is how they are formed. Double rainbows are formed when sunlight is reflected twice within a raindrop with the violet light that reaches the observer's eye coming from the higher raindrops and the red light from lower raindrops. 2 11
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1 Morning all from Estuary-Land. The last remaining slice of the vanilla cheesecake is sitting in the fridge waiting for lunch, it should last that long as I had a bacon buttie or three for breakfast and I am full up. Now to continue sorting boxes in the utility room.
RMweb Premium Popular Post New Haven Neil Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 1 Morning - we were up early, honest. Didn't stay up though, and shock of shocks the c*ck on the corner didn't set off fireworks at midnight as we slept through. Fireworks are strictly controlled here but are available for 5th Nov, odd as it's not our Government he was trying to blow up. 6c and....dry and sunny, gentle breeze! So we went out for a walk around the village early doors, and have pottered in the garden a bit. Off out soon for lunch, picking up Jayne then going to Glen Helen (way out west) for another walk and something yummy from the lodge. Then in to the Bright Lights of Royal Ramsey to Millichaps furniture store sale, as Jayne is looking for a new small sofa/large seat for her snug.
Hroth
A lazy New Years Day so far, didn't surface until after eight, and currently having an equally late elevenses of coffee and a mince pie, with the Vienna NYD concert on as background music. ( I thought the interval filler was dire, and apparently they're going to throw in the equally depressing ballet dancers in the second half too...) 15 1

Erichill16
Early Afternoon All. HAPPY NEW YEAR to all and hopefully all with health issues see an improvement. Been busy of late, bookwork, transporting furniture down to Newark and a trip to the charity shop. Internet/wifi/ipad very slow so work and visits to here have been frustrated. No new year’s resolutions made here. Football match this afternoon but will be going on my own, no Mum or nephew. Better get a move on. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1 Bon a née from the Charente. We got in from the party at 01.00 in time to watch the fireworks from London. A good time had been had. The log burner is going well and the house is slowly warming up after our absence. A quacbird has been roasted and a good friend is due shortly to consu e it. The car has been emptied d most thi gs sorted. Was hi g underway and a weeks worth of logs arrowed down. My Christmas wish of a 7 1/4" line from the wood shed to the front door, obviously got forgotten by Santa. Jamie 17
RMweb Premium RobAllen Posted January 1 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 1 I enjoyed a bit of modelling yesterday building the Finetrax point. Today I've been taking decorations down and tidying up ready for the working week starting tomorrow. A couple of days ago, it dawned on me that I could do with a test track, so I might have a go at putting some track on some wood, solely for running in locos and other testing type activities. 16
