I believe it's the last standing remnants of one of the Dietzsch lime kilns that were built on site between 1867 and 1900.

A lot of the other buildings were demolished.

I've done a bit more Googling for info about the site at Betchworth and found some details

about the pictured kiln , it's actually a Smidth kiln , the Dietzsch kiln is lower down the site

and mostly overgrown in the Google shot , but this page gives more detail on the positions .

When the map opens zoom in to see more detail .

Also just found this Youtube site tour, no audio but it does give a good view of

the other kilns .

More news on the Baltimore bridge disaster. Apparently the ship sent out a Mayday call four minutes before the collision stating that they were out of control due to engine failure. There were eight workers on the bridge repairing potholes and six are still missing. The bridge authorities closed the bridge as soon as they got the message about the ship out of control and the workers were notified.

Looking at the accident to the bridge this morning, it's a cantilever bridge of similar style to the Forth Railway bridge.

The problem with a cantilever bridge is once it's unbalanced it all falls down as it's no longer in balance..

It seems the Ship's Captain put out a mayday due to loss of power - this gave time for traffic across the bridge to be stopped; unfortunately there were workers on the Bridge fixing potholes - though 2 were rescued, with 6 missing.

Afternoon all from Estuary-Land. I got a call from my GP surgery this afternoon saying I will have an appointment with a urologist in about four weeks time. Thankfully there seems to be no urgency so it seems its just to check out everythings OK. I also asked to book an examination by the physiotherapist re. the arthritis, he/she is fully booked until May so I may have to wait.

Evening all from Estuary-Land. Dinner tonight was toad-in-the-hole followed by bread and butter pudding. Watched the program about Indian hill railways on Channel 4, I think I've seen it before but I'd never seen last nights program. Now to check the other threads I follow on RMweb and Farcebook.
