Simond
Ozzy As always, your work reminds me that if I tried a little harder, and spent a little more time, I could perhaps do a little better. At the weekend, I will attempt to put fuse wire pipes on the gauges & lubricator of my 28xx, the blackhead of which currently adorns my bench. Thanks for the incentive! (And what's the hurry anyway?) ozzyo
Hello all, as a bit of a change from my normal modelling, these etches arrived yesterday for me to have a play with. Yes a set of steps for a Diesel (what is Steve trying to do to me). I had no instructions for them but it's only four bits to assemble so this is my take on building them, the parts are etched in 10 thou N/S so are quit delicate. The first job was to cut out the side frames, Then do the first two bends, for the locating pegs, Then fold up one of the sides. Before moving on I ran some solder in the fold line making sure that I did not fill in the small slot for the bottom step, when I was doing this I also ran some solder into the fold lines for the locating pegs, The tread plates cut from the etch. To give an idea of the size the rule is in 0.5mm increments, The front of the tread plate folded down. For this I used my hold 'n' fold, Then it was just a matter of fitting and soldering the tread plate into position. Two points to watch out for, the bottom step has to go in the slot next to the bottom fold. To do this I bent the second side to about 60deg. then put the step in place and bent the side up to 90deg. The second step is just twisted in to position and soldered in place. The second bit of fun was forming the top angle and the small vertical part, the etches are very good on this as Pete has etched the fold line to be fully closed when you are in the correct position. Was it worth it, I'll let you decide when you compare the two types. A photo of the real thing to compare them to, I've still got a bit of cleaning up to do, I think that I'll grit-blast them and then just metal black them, I don't want the risk of paint clogging up all of the detail on the tread plates. Time taken to do them about 2 hours. OzzyO.
3 link
Hello Matey, That was a bit of a Rolf Harris moment for a while " do you know what it is yet mate? ", they certainly look a lot better than the originals and although much thinner I'm sure they are just as robust. ATB, Martyn.

ozzyo
Hello all, just to finish the steps off, after a small amount of cleaning up it was into the grit-blaster, this is the result, After this it was into the meths for a quick wash, Then into the metal black, it's not showing as well as I hoped but with a careful rub over with a cotton bud I managed to get a bit of a shine on the treads to look like the worn effect that the boots of the railway men would have had on the paintwork, OzzyO.
