New & Improved Class 33

.

I note that the Model Rail "Facebook" page states ;

" .......  Note the much-improved body and cab shape, fine etched metal details and extra detail under the bufferbeam.  ......."

However, nothing regarding any changes to the much criticised roof.

.

"much-improved body and cab shape" It was the body and cab shape that was affected by the roof. The roof forms part of the body.

Now we've got that out of the way, what about the bodyside grills and mesh? Do they really protrude as implied by the posted images or is it just a consequence of the large size? Rail Exclusive's plans included "Body framing visible through new grills", which is somewhat different to what look like a completely new moulding with the grills protruding too far from the body and the mesh too large. If the only way to get the desired depth is to increase the protrusion, I'd stick with the previous arrangement.

Price has jumped a bit.

Heljan original £79

Recent re-runs £89

Rex's proposed upgrade £99

This latest one £126 (non-MR versions £119?)

Kernow says 8-pin plug (same as old model) so doubt anything has changed inside - bulb headcode?

Hope it is spot on...

Regards

Igor

Can't comment on what Rail Exclusives wanted or planned. This is the model produced by Heljan and as displayed at Warley last November.

They made it to Glasgow on several occasions ....don't ask! I have a mate (very old!) who has a photo of a pair at Uddingston Cement terminal on the south side of Glasgow. How? Who knows, assume conducted?

  • 3 weeks later...

They regularly made it to York, singly or in multiple, on the Cliffe-Uddingston (by Glasgow) cement trains in the 1960s, being replaced there by, very often, a 40

Concidentally, John Turner has uploaded a photo of 2x 33 at York in the 60s:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/blue-diesels/12266730184/

"A pair of Cromptons at York - D6525 & D6554 approach York station with the Uddingston (Lanarkshire) to Cliffe (Kent) cement train - 30/07/1962.

What later became TOPS class 33s were regulars at York and south down the ECML with this working in the early 1960s. The BRC&W built diesels took over the southbound train at Clifton (York) and worked throughout to Kent."

Heljan just announced on their Facebook site that the first two retooled class 33 are in their warehouse ready for dispatch!

So we will soon find out if they top notch or still lacking certain refinements.

They also say 2 early class 26 with end doors and more Clayton's.

They don,t say which liveries and numbers however. Nor have they posted photos.

This was sent out a little while back when asked about what was going on... It looks like it's been rushed out. I know RE were going to do seperate springs, brake cylinders and piping under the battery boxes.

----

Dear Mr Thanks for your recent communication regarding our Class 33 project.

Whilst RAIL EXCLUSIVE is naturally disappointed by Heljan’s unsurprising intention to release its own versions of the Class 33, this does not immediately affect our own on-going project to produce an accurate 4mm scale model of the ‘Crompton’. Please draw your own conclusions as to why the Danish manufacturer is taking this course of action immediately after our legal dispute but some eight years after the original model was released.

Whilst it is obvious that some of our original requirements will have been adopted by the Danish company, it is hoped that you, as a loyal RAIL EXCLUSIVE customer, will make a personal and detailed assessment before making any alternative purchasing decision.

As you already know from our previous communication, the reason behind the stalling of the original commission was Heljan’s inability to meet our full specification, the level of accuracy and detail demanded, and the delivery promise. We have no reason to believe any of these circumstances have changed.

Many thanks

Jamie Walsh

Photoes of the model of 33002 show the model without the high intensity light. She did run as such in Dutch but most of Dutch life was with.

Thanks for the REX update. It would be good to know what else that REX intended that Heljan missed.

Does anybody know if REX intend to get somebody else to manufacture 33s to their detailed spec?
