Another home made Borders rail progress video this one features Ryehaugh to Ferniehirst

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2gOdZ8ux14

Great construction progress record this. Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to capture and post-produce it.

Particularly interesting to see the way the mini-projects are linked together around the Gala Water from some of the distance footage.

It's also inspired me to do some before and after checking on the still pre-rebirth Google Earth.

And Council table of useful detail concerning individual bridge works around Gala:

"Keeping the project team fuelled has been a logistical challenge in itself and an estimated 25,000 bacon rolls from local caterers have helped to keep construction crews energised."

Is this the Scots equivalent of the Pasties that were consumed in such quantities at Dawlish.

Here are the last 4 videos in the series that some of you may be following

Watching all 9 parts takes about 2 hours, twice the time the train will take.

I have quite enjoyed making them and may revisit the sites later in the summer. At least I got my bike out the shed and got some fresh air in the process, though I don't recommend cycling down the A7.

Part 6A Heriot to Gorebridge

Part 6B Gore bridge to Newtongrange

Part 7 Newtongrange to Glen Esk

Part 8 The Citybypass to Newcraighall

I have really enjoyed and appreciated these videos as unofficial build archive progress reports.  Very many thanks for getting on your bike and securing them.

If you want to have a good grin at local youngsters learning about the coming of their 'new railway' after skipping a few generations, you could do worse than watch the video at the end of this link:

How come they didn't show them this infamous 1977 BTF film "The Finishing Line"?

Excellent set of videos fegguk! They really gave a sense of the scale of the project. Brave bit of cycling going up the A7.

Also really apparent the reason for the worry over expandability of the structures. There's some substantial lumps of concrete that would need expanding for double track. OTOH really pleased to see the railway coming to life...can't wait to ride on it.

Any chance of an update in the autumn? You're doing a better job than the official channels in recent weeks!

Oh TFL is the worst ever most gruesome antithesis of child psychology I think I ever saw. It physically revolted me last time I watched it. It struck me as borderline voyeuristic* in its storyboard. Then I remembered this was the Seventies: The Decade In The Dock. When seemingly everyone in the Establishment's attitude towards children was by today's standards rather suspect.

* I would rather use the 'P' word, if I didn't risk having to explain myself

Off topic - I was 5 and watching TV unsupervised at a friend's house when I saw that film broadcast on TV. :O  I got scared off trains for a short time, I even refused to enter a DMU depot with my grandfather!  :(

Back on topic, I do hope the re-opened line proves successful.

Successful? Guaranteed. A couple of days ago I met a gent at a small agricultural show in Caithness. We were talking of horses and he told me he can't wait to see this new railway opened as it will let him and his wife get to Kelso Racecourse.

Not one of our new railways has disappointed so far in terms of usage. I don't expect the New Waverley to break that particular mould.

I understand that the Tweed Valley has been discussed in a rather low key manner too, certainly as far as Kelso.

As cliff erosion increasingly becomes an issue on the ECML north of Berwick, the rationale for a new Tweed Valley option gathers substance.

Some excellent aerial videos from Network Rail have been posted:

There's something like 16 videos in total covering the entire route, about 30 minutes in total.

Can you post a link to where these are please.  I can't find them either on the Network Rail site or You Tube.  Cheers

Unless I'm very much mistaken that's active provision for later doubling.  It's single track over Lothianbridge and through Eskbank as far as I know, and as Hardengreen is between the two....

Need to check now!

EDIT: just checked, and the single line starts at Edinburgh Southern Bypass after Shawfair.  It redoubles near Fushiebridge I think, but it's definitely single line across Hardengreen.

  • 2 weeks later...

Transport Scotland are looking for ways to celebrate opening the line.

How about the traditional way? Churchbells ringing, bunting on the streets, schoolchildren wavings flags at the official first train, parades through the newly connected towns, civic feast in the townhall for the local worthies and a nosh up (with free beer) in a big tent for everyone else?
