Jamie That's part incline, part optical illusion I reckon. The line is climbing on its approach to Gorebridge here, in a rightwards direction on the photograph. I can't recall the gradient at this point. However, the right hand end is nearer to the viewer than the left, as it crosses the A7 on a generous skew. Using http://www.bordersra...G-MD-000017.pdf I've done a quick check via Photoshop's "rotate" tool, and it looks like between the beams of the bridge and the road there's a skew of approx 25° I think it's a 1 in 70 gradient here as well, quite severe. 'CHARD
Lucky lads! http://www.itv.com/news/border/update/2013-11-21/full-report-new-borders-rail-drivers-picked/ "The successful candidates include a blacksmith, a welder, an airport postman, a mechanic and a former Lance Corporal in the Armed Forces amongst others and hail from a variety of Borders towns including Galashiels, Hawick, Melrose and Selkirk. They will work alongside eight existing ScotRail drivers on the service." Look at those illustrious towns - names of Waverley lore every one!

'CHARD
I wonder if they will work some of the construction trains to build up route knowledge. I don't expect there will still be many drivers available who used to sign the route. Jamie Sadly in one sense, there's nothing of the old route left to 'sign,' every aspect of the drivers' interface, be it sightings, signals, stopping distances, track layout, platform details etc have changed. The only thing nominally the same will be the gradient profile. As for working construction trains, similarly, apart from maybe 'observing' from the footplate, I doubt there will be a huge amount of relevance, notwithstanding that the contract for drivers will be with one of the freight companies, leading to all manner of employer complications. 'CHARD
"The road will continue to run close to its current route, with the railway passing underneath the road to the south of Falahill. Residents had voiced concerns about being sandwiched between the A7 and the new railway but Scottish Borders Council agreed to the revised layout. The planning committee was also asked to ensure the rail bridge over the A7 at Falahill could carry double tracks." fegguk
Draft timetable for those planning there first trip in Spetember 2015. It would appear to suggest the trains will mostly terminate at Waverley, though it may simply not be showing where the train goes after Waverley. 62440
Just read on the BBC website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-25982048) : A 12,000 tonne crane will be used to hoist the bridge's four beams into place, with each beam weighing the equivalent of about 55 cars. What, simply, is a 12,000 tonne crane? Bruce.

What, simply, is a 12,000 tonne crane? Bruce. I suspect they've got 1 too many zero's there's no mobile crane that big in existence apart from possibly a floating one. The main problem will probably be reach. If each main girder weighs about 55 tons and they are doing it over 2 weekends they will probably put two spans in place each weekend and then move the crane in between.
