RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted February 10, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 10, 2012 Hi Captain, the 57/6s are no longer based at Laira, Old Oak looks after the fleet... Locomotives in the South West Taunton usually 4 or 5 Freightliner 66s Plymouth Laira 3 08s St Blazey, 1! 66 all week a second loco from wednesday until friday (changes on a thursday night) Fowey 1 08 (782?) Penzance Long Rock on 57/6 and the 08 And of course locos aren't much good if there is no one on hand to drive them or the Driver who is there is out of hours. RMweb Gold 46444 Posted February 10, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 10, 2012 66847 was this week's loco, seen here stabled at Newton Abbot this morning Looking towards Exeter, the main line curves round to the right, and the Heathfield line branches off on the left beyond the maltings (and drops a bit by the look of it). Great shots Rod, You can almost smell Tuckers Maltings as well and the Teignworthy Brewery! Cheers, Mark
devondynosoar118
Long rock looks rather quiet. Was it there to service the locos used for clay traffic or is it mainly DMUs? Like those shots of Newton, if you squint a bit you can almost imagine the rest is still there!

Long Rock is the main servicing location for HSTs in Cornwall and FGW units as well. Voyagers are also serviced overnight. Freight doesn't normally use it, as there is a DB Schenker depot at St Blazey still.

Like those shots of Newton, if you squint a bit you can almost imagine the rest is still there! As Captain said, Long Rock is the main servicing depot for FGW in Cornwall, during these days of making use of assets during the day most of the stock is out working with the odd failure and the sleepers only on depot (if nothing outside then the 57/6 and stock off the sleepers will probably be inside the depot), even on a sunday it can look very quiet. Today there was a run by 57604 from Penzance to Plymouth Laira to pick up a sleeper coach and take that back to Long Rock, no pictures as we were enroute Gunnislake and saw the light engine pass us! RMweb Premium Kris Posted February 12, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 12, 2012 On the day that I took the photo of Long Rock the sleeper set was stabled in the sidings at the other end.
Cornish Triang Paul
Nightime sees 5 HSTs and 2 220/1s along with around 5 150/153s. Only TT freight west of Truro is the wed only depot fuel.

Like those shots of Newton, if you squint a bit you can almost imagine the rest is still there! Bit far west for clay traffic, even in its heyday; the main freight from that far west used to be fruit, veg and flowers outwards, along with chemicals from Hayle Wharf. The loading docks on the Penzance side of the depot were for vegetable traffic- apart from new potatoes, there were cauliflowers (confusingly referred to as 'brocolli..)
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted February 12, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 12, 2012 Hey guys - this is very good stuff, but just a gentle reminder, perhaps this discussion should continue over in the 'Railways of Cornwall' sub-forum?

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted February 21, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 21, 2012 It begs the question of the Dubloon > Euro rate........?! floss_4
Have to say I was surprised at the Alphington news, they seemed to be running around 4 times as many trains as DBS did... I think it went back to DBS for maybe one train only but nothing else since. Perhaps someone could confirm?
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted February 26, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 26, 2012 I think it went back to DBS for maybe one train only but nothing else since. Perhaps someone could confirm? The contract is currently with DBS again, as you correctly say, although I understand from contacts within the FOCs that the nature of them is relatively short term, enabling the end customer to switch fairly easily. The reason there is currently no traffic is that the scrap yard have nothing that they wish to send out by rail at the moment.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted March 8, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 8, 2012 Pleased to say that the second timber company will start to send logs by rail from Teignbridge in the next couple of weeks, so the train should then become weekly (one week to Chirk, the other alternate week to Carlisle).
