A diorama or two by Sandhills

Jon, yet again... amazing! I really must get on and work out a P4 diorama based on southern end of ECML with yours as inspiration...assuming my Deltic is brought back onto the workbench and finished (I hope).... that single road servicing shed is now sat in my drawer and begging for company. Thanks also (again) for the weathering infor... something that I've found interesting to read - the results speak for themselves. Hope you and your lad enjoyed the carry on clagging.

Jon

Apologies if this is a bit of a repeat post but I just wanted to show the difference between yesterdays photos in white cloud and todays in full sun. Same board, roughly the same composition and same subject but a major difference IMHO !

The difference has shocked me ! -

Just had a final go at nailing that Peak shot in better light and come up with these. Colour, B&W, Cross Processed, which works best im still not sure and I know I could probably do with losing the wires completely but for now its as good as im going to get I think !

Jon... oh please stop, I'm turning green with envy. Truly splendid... all of them... but I think the colour images shows the weathering to better effect, the B&W white ones do have that "real feel" about them though. :good:

The best so far - excellent - like leafing through one of John Vaughans old Diesel publications - Wires look on the solid side but a minor point - I am convinced you have used an iPhone4 app for these! - You will correct me I am sure! - Ian

Ian (Crisis) - Spot on, its a 59p app on iPad I use to cross process. It wasnt until last night I realised there was a cross process application on the in built RMweb image editor ! I shall use that in future ! Cross processing is usually the last process I put some of the snaps through so after that I usually post straight to fb, Flickr, WNXX & RM straight from the iPad !

Ian (Artizen) - Thanks, your advice on camera settings followed and hey presto.......!

What are you using for ballast Jon?

The top shot of the peak looks very realistic and the colour of the ballast is spot on.

Have you got any 26/27's or Scottish Duffs? It would take me right back at Eastfield if you have?!!

Keep em coming!

Cheers Alex, i'll look forward to it, Operation Crane starts next Friday when the OT gets paid !!

Ballast is.......

.....with just a mist of Sleeper Grime spray and weathered black in places.

Im so tempted by the Rails of Sheffield specials, 541 & 461 would look a treat on the board. I plan a pair of Heljan 26's in Railfreight Coal next but funding that little project may take until Xmas !

Few pics below of the Scottish stuff I did a while back...........

After a few weeks of OO gauge work I decided to have a break and play around with some of my lads N gauge collection. Partly because he was belly aching that his stuff didnt look like mine, partly because I fancied a change and partly because I like putting my eyesight through hell !! Only kidding on the last one !!

First out the cabinet yesterday was class 66, 66152 in DBS. Not sure if this was the Dapol or Farish version but after pinching a front valance from 'Eddie' and finding a set of 'ickle pipes I set about detailing.

A lightish weather to roof and bogies and despite being 2mm its doesnt look too bad in decent light -

post-6667-0-10518700-1315400421.jpg

Aswell as weathering and detailing locos & wagons im also building a small scenic plinth for finished stuff to be displayed & photographed on but i'll do a seperate entry for the constuction of this.

Next up over lunchtime was weathering 4 PCA Farish Rugby Cement tanks.

From out the box each one was sprayed with frame dirt -

post-6667-0-33161800-1315400649.jpg

I then wiped over the wagons with a microfibre cloth damp with Isopropanol and removed most of the spray leaving dirt in the corners where the cloth didnt touch -

post-6667-0-10688700-1315400750.jpg

After that I added streaks with a cotton bud dipped in a watered down solution of brown paint & thinner. The streaks were postioned close to the filler ports on the top of the wagon -

post-6667-0-68867000-1315400863.jpg

Added to the brown stains was a light brush of Railmatch Concrete -

post-6667-0-98243900-1315400936.jpg

Handbrake wheels painted white & the discharge point & underframe pipe was touched up with silver -

post-6667-0-23909900-1315401035.jpg

I also fancied doing a little experiment on one and decided to mask offround the 'Rugby' on one tanker so I could depict a de branded example, grey metal primer paint was used to do this and the Rugby Cement logo painted out with weathered black -

post-6667-0-26350800-1315401190.jpg

After repeating the process on 3 further wagons apart from the obvious 'coupling' giveaway they dont look to bad in a rake -

post-6667-0-78555000-1315401313.jpg

Probably the bext 2 shots for realism -

post-6667-0-37583300-1315401349.jpg

More weathering practice required & certainly better lighting conditions needed for the pics but for now im happy with the results and im going to crack on with further PCAs & some RMC JGAs.

Working in N is hard going on the eyes but very satisfying..........mmmmmm.........Peak Forest in N, theres a thought !!

it's not a crime you know... :P

Sorry Pete !! That came out wrong !! :blush_mini:

I could remove the couplings for the photos and reduced the gap between buffers etc but then id have the toe curling job of putting them all back complete with those disappearing springs.......and I really dont fancy that !!

No worries Jon...it just made me laugh when I read it...

You could always choose to not install the rapidos back and fit DG's or similar...but then that would give you quite a bit of work to go replace them all on your son's rolling stock :D

More N today and ive got to say the more I do the more im enjoying life in 2mm land ! The scope for full length trains on a 6ft photographic diorama is very appealing !

The cogs are turning & I can divulge pictures of Peak Forest have been saved in a new folder on the hard drive.......codenamed 'Operation N' !!

My N gauge plinth is complete, if I was to do something bigger I would certainly need to practice better ballasting, getting depth and coverage in 4mm using loose ballast is hard enough, in 2mm its a nightmare !

post-6667-0-34534000-1315479515.jpg

Im happy with the hillside, formed using polystyrene then covered with fine turf scatter, the additional growth/bushes have been made using a 4mm Hornby Skalescene tree cut up into sections and squashed into shape by hand !

post-6667-0-94208500-1315479572.jpg

Installed a fence and some vegetation along the front edge and the scene is completed with a S&T cupboard from the bits box.

post-6667-0-86371200-1315479664.jpg

Ive also weathered a Farish RMC JGA hopper this morning and enjoyed it so much im now craving more, lots more ! How many of these formed a full 6M11 Peak Forest-Washwood Heath behind a class 60 ??

post-6667-0-98990700-1315479780.jpg

I added my own load by back filling the hopper with modelling clay then adding 2 spoon fulls of 2mm grey ballast into heaps however I think 3 peaks to the load would have look better than 2 but its so hard to keep the shape when glueing in place. The colour was added by hand painting with a mucky brown and a dusting of a sand coloured powder went over the top to finish.

Unexpectedly the suns out so ive revisited a few N gauge shots using the stock ive weathered up until now.

A little more success in better light I think ?

Im now considering a 6ft by 2ft board of Peak Forest/Doveholes. The road bridge that we all know in the middle with 3ft either side. Not worked it out for sure yet but im guessing that would easily accomodate a cl60 + 15-20 JGAs leaving room at either end to crop the end of the board off photographs.

An area from the loco sidings and signal box at one end and just disappearing round the bend at the other would be ideal, anyone care to work out what that is in feet using 2mm/N ??!!

Anyway on with the pics and a Farish MBA monster truck to weather this weekend ! Question is, how do I represent the deep rusting scratch marks on the outside from where excavtaors catch the insides when unloading, has anyone tried this or seen it represented in model form ?!

What im on about seen here on a ICA -

post-6667-0-32624400-1315580293.jpg

Really pleased with the JGA, cant wait for several more behind a grey 60 !

post-6667-0-66604100-1315580288.jpg

Only limited success with the 60 compared with the 66. Front end features are a little too chunky through the lens and this one of course is missing pipes and couplings.....which doesnt help !

The 'Peak Forest Line Up' !!

post-6667-0-25186300-1315580301.jpg

The better examples for realism so far have turned out to be the wagons.......with the aid of natural light of course !

Have a great weekend everyone and if anyone has decent pics of Peak Forest from the road bridge, and without breaking any copyright (!) feel free to post on the thread, id be very interested to see them.
