A diorama or two by Sandhills

A little play around this afternoon and apart from weathering, the first two sections out of 10 are complete however its obvious that I need to be more careful sticking down the block work as the middle pillar blocks are a little wonky ! I'll re-position those tonight.

Im using Metcalfe paving sheets (M0055) as these were the best for size & colour after looking through loads of Plasticard and Scalescene samples. Scalescenes Dressed Stone came close but after consideration I decided the paving sheets on thin card would be easier to cut, fold and recolour.

Im happy with the dimensions I came up with for the wall but still not sure i'll be able to get the various stone colours correct when it comes to adding the weathering.

Having looked at hundreds of photos of the location it strikes me as a wall of many faces ! The difference in colour between one end and the other, the lighting at the time the image was taken and also the year the image was taken all seem to make a huge difference to its appearence.

A few snaps of experiments carried out this afternoon and my day off next week (a full days modelling hopefully) will see the introduction of the new thread and an insight into the materials and processes being used to construct the wall.

Ran this shot through a Clarity mod on my iPhone and it changed the complexion and colour of the block work completly !

Fairly crude, but from a distance these will pass as the bright yellow litter bins postioned on every other section down the length of the wall.

A cable appears to run at least half way down the wall from the South end. A stripped out thin cable from an old wired computer mouse is used here.

A long way to go yet but in terms of proportion I think its about right. Finding the sweetest angle to capture stock as if stood on the platform will be the tricky bit !

Decent light and a blue sky behind will make a big difference. I have no idea of the purpose of the 5 wooden strips within the arches, however they seem to have survived the years and despite the odd missing one they are in evidence on several photos taken within the last few weeks so will be included on my interpretation.

Unfortunately the Peak is the only BR Blue livered loco I own at the minute ! Should have held onto that McRat !

Im yet to find out how well I will get on using weathering powder on the smooth card finish ?

That's a really good start Jon.., so, are these the individual slabs that come in a pack - self adhesive and just stick down? The look quite good here. I presume you'll be setting some spare bits aside to practice the weathering powders on. When I tried to tone down some metcalf card brickwork I used charcoal blended in and this seemed to work reasonably well (as a first attempt)... will be follwoign with interest!

Having spent a couple of hours this afternoon playing around with the wall pattern printed on sheets of watercolour artists paper there is a slight improvement on texture and its not looking so flat. Colouration went well using powder and a light spray with matt varnish has sealed it.

Still in two minds as to whether I should carry on or bin it and start again using scribed plasticard. Thought I would gauge opinion first although the fact im sitting here not overly chuffed with my efforts probably answers my question anyway !

Certainly works better in B&W and I have to keep remembering that its not all about the wall. Most will be obscured in photos by stock and then theres the OHLE, trackwork and ballast to focus on aswell. The wall will be at quite a distance on the finished photos as per the prototype pics im working to, these being examples taken without using a zoom.

Honest opinions please -

To be honest mate I think you would daft to bin it, it's spot on and the textures make it look so much more than paper and card, the colour works well but the black n white look supreme, my opinion ... Keep it

I'm with Neil on this one Jon. The results look really good. If I'm to be completly honest, I think the splatter effect on the lower ledges looks really good, but I'm not quite so sure about the same effect near the top of the wall. Mind you I'm no expert, but the top doesn't work quite as well as it does for the lowewr ledges.

This might be seen as being picky, but in the photo of the real wall, the mortar lines on the main wall line up with those on the panels, whereas on your model, they don't. To me, this mis-alignment stands out quite a bit.

Hey

I know if I'd made this I'd be well impressed with myself, but knowing the standards you work to, and the fact your not happy and have an alternative consideration...I imagine you will go with the restart (though I wouldn't bin anything too quickly!)

I agree Stubby47's comments too. It's a picky detail, but the offset lines can play tricks on the eyes, and when I first glanced at the pic, the central pillar looked as if the bricks were skewed. Looking harder, I can see that's not the case.

By far, this is an impressive bit of modelling, but it's only you that has to be happy with it...If your not, then I'd be inclined to at least play with some scribed plasticard and see if you feel better about it, before commiting one way or another.

Regards

Lee

Just time for a quick update.

Ive carried on in vain and using card & paper print ive constructed 4ft of wall now deciding that once its finished, if it still didnt work I could start all over again using other methods. The jury is still out but im perfecting techniques as I go and its starting to work out and look like I imagined. Im adding thin mists of hairspray, photo mount spray glue and finally Railmatch matt varnish and as I add these im starting to build up a layer of texture on the card without causing damage. Its slowly starting to look a bit more stone like and not paper like !!

Ive now got to replicate the weathering, staining and colouration on the completed wall to match the first two sections I did as an experiment.

Still have the top stone rail to fix in place so the daylight showing through on these pics will be sorted before the weathering begins.

After weathering I need to turn my attention to the chimney of which Google Earth offers a great view from the street on the other side of the wall.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, its most welcome and I hope the realignment of the inset blocks to match the outside blocks is noticed. Certainly a great improvement so thanks to those that pointed this out.

The last panel........and I only lost the tip off one thumb cutting the rest out !!

4ft ready to weather

The 37 suits more than the Peak I think !

Cant wait for some 'Roarer' shots in B&W

Have I got the proportions right ?

Still to weather

Not feeling brave enough to tackle the weathering on the completed wall sections I decided this morning to build myself a chimney lollipop instead !

This is the view from behind via Google Earth -

post-6667-0-93478400-1330349305.jpg

A balsa stick built upon with layers of 4mm brick plasticard and weathered using white primer to pick out the mortar lines and weathered black for the grungy look. Do you think SWMBO will notice !

post-6667-0-23503300-1330348025.jpg

I was astonished at the close up of the brick work and must revisit this shot using a tripod and the macro setting on the camera !

post-6667-0-46420700-1330348027.jpg

The chimney will be set back slightly on the board behind the wall but im yet to put everything together to see exactly where it needs to be fixed to look correct as per prototype pics.

post-6667-0-51091100-1330348030.jpg

Of the three sections only a fraction of the lower third section shows on some of the prototype pictures im using for reference.

post-6667-0-91142100-1330348033.jpg

Spary on white Halfords car primer instantly wiped off with a rough rag dipped in white spirit achieves the look and a second spray of weathered black by Railmatch, scrubbed off with an old tooth brush helps to age the bricks and tone down the mortar lines.

A quick update.

Ive attempted the weathering on the rest of the wall but a little more tweaking is needed here and there and the old gap needs filling !

post-6667-0-49083500-1330451357.jpg

The wall has been fixed to the baseboard using metal L shaped brackets and I will be able to unscrew and remove as and when is neccessary whilst ballasting etc......

post-6667-0-53569000-1330451404_thumb.jpg

The height of the chimney may need adjusting......its a little too high im feeling ? Its attached using Blu-Tac at the minute !

.....however it looks about right in this pic -

I'm waiting for Aldi to have a special on Modelling Pixies so I can get on with my layout. Unfortunately they don't appear to be offering them this week.

Lidl had some last week apparently.., sold out by the time I got there. Damm!

Ive made a start today on homemade OHLE but its not easy ! There is a gantry in place for some of the photos below but it needs a lot more work and my 0.31 & 0.25 straight wire is in the post so it will be a while before the wires get strung up !

Ive also ordered 6m of C&L Finescale track today along with various tubs of ballast in 2mm, prototype photos suggesting the ballast in the sidings is more 'stone chippings' rather than ballast as we know it.

Nothing id be tempted to post in the 'realistic album' yet but early test pics with the wall, chimney and gantry elements all in place are quite promising. Once ive fitted the working lights to the wall i'll be quite keen to see the results from a self lit board at night ?!

Inappropriate stock doesnt help but im sure there will be more of a West Coast Border City feel when I can afford some 'Sparkies' & a rake of Royal Mail or RES vans.........
