Hi Tom,

Like the finish on the A1.

"far better eternal condition", so does this mean I can take my A1's, 2, 3', 4's with me.

Mark

Haha.... little typo from me, I'll go and edit it.

I like to think all long gone locos are running in a place somewhere where the scrap mans torch can never get them.....

Ok, now I'm just being silly! :jester:

Hi Tony

I've been following your posts in the Peterborough North thread regarding the cleanliness of Tyneside locomotives.

Something I've been trying to work out, is when this reputation towards Gateshead locos began. After discussing with a few people we came to

the conclusion that this seems to stem from the post war period through into BR.

Regarding pre war locos, it would seem that Gateshead locos were in far better external condition. I'm guessing of course there may have been exceptions,

but the Tyneside locos in numerous photos seem to have at least had a once over with an oily rag! :)

Cheers

EDIT

Edited  due to the fact that a single letter missing can alter the whole meaning of a word..... :mosking:

You'll have learned how profoundly ignorant I am on such matters. :)

But I agree, post war. Pre-war everyone was just glad to get a job - any job. But after the war, along with the necessity to re-build the country, and the consequence of a  Labour Government, there was even a shortage of labour in some areas. Otherwise, I think the situation was quite well covered on Gilbert's excellent thread - a *must follow* for all ECML fans IMHO.

Tony.

Hi Tom,

Slightly belated 'great to see you back on RMWeb' but as sincere as everybody else's nonetheless.

Great to see you having a crack at 1938 and your awesome weathering techniques being applied to that somewhat cleaner era.

Interesting 'discovery' re 1938 WTTs at Darlo museum. Why didn't I think of that? Shall have to pay it a visit as it's right under my nose (doh! :fool: ).

Thanks 4479 :)

After looking through their online catalogue, I think there will be something there that interests you!

2577 is now weathered and will do some finishing touches in the morning, before photographs as long as it's sunny outside.

Something that I can show, is the new hobbybase paint base on my workbench. This was advertised in this months Hornby Mag, and I must say it's

useful for keeping my tools together on the bench, rather than having to keep turning around and searching through my tool box.

Sort of tidies the workbench up.....a little anyway. :mosking:

Glorious sunshine (for a short time) this morning, so headed to the Garden with 2577.

Although it looks similar to the other two, I have tried to show this loco has been cleaned, with a collection of dirt around the boiler bands,

plus that which has sprayed up from traffic.

For some reason the colour is a little faded on the images, so I would suggest clicking on the image itself to see it's true colour.

I have another apple green A1 to work on at some point (Gladiateur) but requires some work on it first, plus I also have a Mallard model

of the super detail variety which will become 4901 'CAPERCAILLIE'.

I'm seeing James in a week or so, where I shall commence work on the J25 plus some other bits and pieces. :)

Its perfectly fine, Tom. Subtlety is harder by definition. BTW, Green against nature's green doesn't help; one sucks the colour out of the other. Otherwise, if you had another, and were able to show them together, then you'd see one heck of a difference! Otherwise, if you really have to take it a bit further, a bit darker on the boiler top where even enthusiastic cleaners would be struggling.

Regards,

Tony.

Hi Tony

There is a fair amount of smoke stain on top, it's just the low angle of the photographs doesn't show it up.

I will be taking her to the layout later for a touch of photography. ;)

'Look forward to that. Can I ask you, what sort of overall display light do you use for the layout? I'm struggling with lighting gantries just now - work that should have been done when the baseboards were built.

As promised. The layout comprises 2 sets of Halogen Spot lights. One set at each end, with a third intended to go in the centre of the layout at some point. Very handy as they have flexible heads for pinpointing the beams of light.

I'm going to have a short break from weathering. On Wednesday I'm off to the Ken Hoole Study Centre to get copies of the 1938 Working Time Table, followed by a not so enjoyable trip to the hospital at Middlesbrough for a Heart Scan, not something one expects at the age of 27. It shouldn't be anything to be worried, and is a routine measure as the medication I'm on in high doses can affect heart valves (my dose is relatively low, even though they have increased it). The Pituitary Tumour I mentioned some months ago, hasn't reduced any more in size, so the medication has been doubled. I've also been diagnosed with border line under active thyroid, another reason weight loss is difficult. There was a concern of Diabetes but after a Glucose test involving two blood tests, my blood sugar levels haven't shown anything out of the ordinary.

Modelling certainly helps against worrying and is keeping me positive. Just wish I could time travel back to 1938.

Thanks Tom.

Why I asked particularly, is to do with colour-temperature. Your layout has - to me - good daylight effect, cold rather than warm; pearly rather than summer-blue. Altogether right IMHO. I've said this before, elsewhere, but blue skies and fluffy white clouds don't suit me; urban industrial areas at the time often had their own overcast weather zones, all those domestic chimneys as well as the factory muck. Add your busy mpd to that...

2577 is just right; cleaner by comparison but not so clean it is not creditable.

Tom, you wouldn't want health care in 1938! Speaking as someone who is not too embarrassed to admit plastering myself with Testogel, on a daily basis, I'm glad of it.

Tony, I'm also on Testogel.......before I started my treatment my levels were literally 0!

Regarding layout lighting, I have to alter the camera's White Balance setting to 'Tungston' which recreates how things look to the naked eye.

I thought you might be; that's why I mentioned it. ;)

Otherwise, that explains a lot, I don't have that option on my ancient 4pixel digi. My room is north-facing with good constant daylight. I'm backing it up with flourescents, around six four-foots around the inner front, then we'll see.

Forgive the intrusion: Two four-foots on a temp gantry rig.

I should have mentioned that the inner ring will have reflective hoods in a fascia-pelmet. The photo's taken from an area outside the layout itself. Otherwise its 4track mainline with a small marshalling yard on the side shown, and a station plus mpd on the unseen sector. The fiddle-yard/back-scene is below the window.

You've the dubious privilege of having the only pic that'll be on RMweb for a very long time to come! Visual development is ALL. :secret:

Tom, those A1s look superb, hope you don't mind, I've had a mess about with one of them to try and date it a bit.

I like the grainy effect Paul..... a very helpful guide for me is the LNER locomotives in colour book. Lots of York photos from 1938 in colour!

Next week James will be observing me making a start on the J25....I'm determined to crack on building and would like to do a B16/1 after the J25...easy paint job being unlined black! ;)

Just need James to give me a kick up the arse to crack on and actually do it and stop worrying! :jester:

Looks very well lit Tony.... is it going to be something North Eastern.

Oh and I'm honoured the photo has graced my thread. ;)

I would check re unlined Black in 1938

Was going off a photo of a York B16 in LNER locomotives in colour, but hadn't checked proper sources. Will have a look in Yeadon later.

Location is the problem, Tom.

It is ECML but is of questionable location at the moment. Newcastle is four-track northwards as far as Heaton. (The lines divide into coastal commuter and ECML) There are no small sheds on the mainline. My shed is only four-lane, and I couldn't approach Heaton (8 lane through shed). South of Newcastle I'm more ignorant of. I'd be happy to take advice on. (pm me anyone)

What is important: - four-track so we have up and down slow/stopping/commuter on the outside, with fast up and down in the centre. The layout is designed with largish curves - 3' min on the inner goods loop. I like to see a ten-coach express doing about 40mph on the straight braking to 20mph at the curves apex; so the train very slowly overhauls the commuter, etc. (This looks very slow to the untutored observer, although it is about 50percent too quick for the curve!.)

So, south of York, perhaps Leeds located, something like Copley Hill  - five road shed... "Coddley Hill?"  (its a load of old cods! ;-) ) That would give me the locos and coach movement I need relative to ECML

The station will be simply urban, busy commuter, with some semi-fast/ town to town stopping, but this is where it gets complicated, geographically...

But enough! This is your thread. When I have something visual I might start a thread, but I'm rather low key, and very short of time and energy for health reasons. I'd even sworn-off posting recently, but was/am glad to see you back. Your enthusiasm and swiftly growing skill are admirable. 'Let you into a secret, my modelling is not just a hobby, nor even an obsession - its a life-saver. An area of existence in which we have absolute control... (well, as much as we are granted in life)

Tony.
