Some of the more recent Oxford models are suitable. The Ford Escort, Cortina Mk. 3, Consul/Granada and Capri, Volkswagen Golf and the Volkswagen T2 van. Abrex make a rear engined Skoda and several of the Cararama range are of suitable vintage. Another manufacturer with some realy good Japanese prototypes is Real-X but like Cararama much of their models are of modern prototypes

There are a few older designs that were produced up to the mid-1970s that, while not brand new, would still be around in 1987. Obvious ones are the Corgi Trackside Ford Escort Mk.1 and the Base Toys/Bachmann Hillman Imp (both types in production until 1975). There's also a Mini in the Trackside range (and to come from Oxford) but all Mk.1s which makes them a bit old. Lima used to make a 1970s Fiat 131 Mirafiore, but that really needed quite a bit of work to make it look decent. That's about it RTP for cars.

Just remember that not everyone drove "this year's model"!

Best, Pete.

very true, i kept my first car going for years, round the clock and 2 engine builds before the gearbox went and towed to scrap yard

guess my roads will be full of older cars with the odd newish one

just didn't want a load of Land Rovers and Hornby Sierras

Might be able to get away with taking the body or flat off a 60's/70's 8 wheeler and then scratch building the stantions for holding logs on the back. Could be a simple conversion job espescially if you add a load of logs.

If you want buses look at EFE as some are of the right era - you might even find one in the right livery for a local operator for the area.

Hmmm, 87 - 93 era road vehicles are my problem too... luckily base models did a leyland t45 cab truck in artic flatbed and both three axle tanker and flatbed forms, but they are now rare, seems to me that there's plenty of late sixties to late seventies stuff and then loads of really nice late 90's onwards stuff but that leaves the ten or so years gap to fill.....keilcraft did i think at one time a kit of a container trailer with tractor unit and a four axle foden tipper.... again hens teeth now.....

The Keilcraft kits are available from Knightwing, I believe they still do all four artics (Volvo F10/ 12, Merc, DAF 2300 and Ford Transcontinental, this can be easily modified to the Renault which lasted well into the the 80s) and the Foden tipper. Other options might be Ford D Series from Base Toys, Bedford TK from Oxford and EFE or maybe some of the 60s/ 70s eight leggers which EFE do, timber wagons could be fairly elderly types. Even today there's a 1972 Volvo F88 which plies it's trade up and down the A1.

Kit built options from Road Transport Images are fairly plentiful as well. Their kits are maybe more expensive than the Base option but they are superb and with a little effort make up into exquisite models.

The problem is the 1980-2005 era is very poorly served especially with regard to lorries. One of the more common cabs was the 'club of four' used by DAF, Magarus-Deutz, Saviem (later Renault) and Volvo yet there is no 'ready to plant' models with this cab.

The CMSC/Kingfisher Sherpa (see the P4 New Street thread) would suit. The K2 type was new in 1982; they do the earlier Sherpa too. Most later P.O. vans had roller shutters at the back in place of the double doors, as always, check against prototype photos. Mabex do/did Post Office 'duplex' lettering, but you could use elements form the Fox TPO transfers too.

I have just been on the modelenium website and it listed a number of future releases that may be of use to you notable:

http://www.modelenium.co.uk/models/COMMER-PB-ROYAL-MAIL--76PB001.aspx

http://www.modelenium.co.uk/models/TRIUMPH-2500-SAFFRON--76TP001.aspx

http://www.modelenium.co.uk/models/AUSTIN-PRINCESS-VERMILLION-BL--76BLP001.aspx

Those should be useful although the commer pb might be too early version dependant since they rotted faster than a very fast rotting thing!

The artwork they've shown so far does seem to suggest it's the early version, rather than the one with the restyled grille from the last few years of production (1977-).

Production continued until 1982/3, and I've seen it suggested this was largely down to big fleet orders from BT and the Post Office who seemed to love them...

Other than the grille issue, they seem to fit in pretty well with ess1uk's 1987 scenario- the British Postal Museum's example (wonder if this influenced Oxford's choice of Postbus livery for the first release?) was apparently used on the Crundale route around Ashford in Kent until 1985, but was in service as a reserve vehicle at Canterbury as late as 1991

The Oxford Land Rover Defender dates from c1983 to almost today. The J B or Airfix kit is from c1958 (series II) lots still around.

Merf.

The JB/Airfix kit is of the later IIa version dating from 1970 with the headlamps in the wings.

Having made a few of these kits, I have to admit that they are not the best representation of the Land Rover, Series III 109 inch wheelbase, but it could be possible to use the cararama body and windscreen, with the kit interior (RHD) and hard-top or soft-top to make a good one.
