In the UK, "cat's eyes" are these reflectors in the road surface:

They are in a rubber housing -- traffic presses them down into a housing, which wipes them clean.

Have you posted that one before? It reminds me that a local supermarket at one point had an "open 25 hours a day" sign. When my son was young that sign used to bother him.

 

They subsequently changed ownership and are no longer open around the clock.
