EBay madness

I know it isn't railways - but it is modelling, of a sort. This shows how the collectors' market thinks. I bought one of these in October 1965 for £4.9s.6d, say £4.48 in today's currency.

At the time it was the mutt's nuts in 1/32nd slot cars - magnesium alloy wheels and chassis. You could get a reasonable slot car, e.g. Revell, for £1.50.

:O :o :O

And a new way of saying 'Rare' !? (I know it does say so on the box,but......)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AIRFIX-KIT-00-LIMITED-PRODUCTION-MINERAL-WAGON-SCALE-00-VINTAGE-MODEL-NEW-/300946833906?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item4611d441f2

Just how limited was the production of this item, even just considering  the run in this box? several thousand? It's also by another David Bailey competitor.

The box illustration possibly explains several of these wagons I've bought with the transfers in the wrong places!

Hornby Dublo and Tri-ang Railways also got the numbers and tare weights transposed on some early models...

Or, as I've had happen in the past, sent to the wrong address and then relisted on eBay (I've no absolute proof, but it certainly seemed to be the same item!).

And another rare item (possibly rare unmade, but not otherwise - there's one in front of me as I type!).

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rex-Wagon-Kit-RARE-/370874968785?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item5659deead1

To be pendantic for collectors, these came with 3 link couplings (Queen Mary anchor chain type) and wheels supplied and the buffers needed to be fitted to the headstocks. Neither the buffers nor the couplings would fit without enlarging the holes.

They're usually a quid or two and can come with quite nice spoked wheels, though they're usually a rubbish bakelite type.

EDIT

Here's a tank wagon of the same make from one of our 'weathering' experts....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kit-Built-Abandoned-Oil-Fuel-tank-wagon-WEATHERED-LOOK-suit-Bachmann-Dapol-/400549234107?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item5d429845bb

They also have this

There's also a mineral wagon from the same seller (spot the deliberate error!)

Now, leaving aside the discussion as to whether it should actually be red, why are the plates fitted the wrong way round and there appears to be an excess of brake levers?

Thanks...now I have some idea of th emake of some bits in our collection...

Tri-ang SR L1 with Tri-ang GWR Hall Tender...

If it's  OO it must be Hornby

Is it the school hols or what?  I seem to be seeing a lot more sellers with ebay score of 0

Trix EM1 (Tri-ang made the EM2)...

Trix again? (If its metal it must be Hornby Dublo (or Wrenn...)...

Hornby Dublo and Tri-ang Railways also got the numbers and tare weights transposed on some early models...

True, but that was in the early fifties*. The Airfix boo-boo was lin the sixties. (The first  HD mineral wagon I acquired (just after it came out)

has the number/load and tare transposed.

* I'm not sure that there aren't BR examples. They certainly changed their mind as to which end of a coach should bear the number - the dublo LMR composite has the number on the LH end whereas the matching Bk/3rd has it on the right.

I have most of the ERG wagons - I'll post photos in 'Collectable/Vintage'.

I like how it says lots of pictures, when there's only two!

If you read down the description there is a link to 19 pictures.  Still won't go under the bridges though.

The well wagon would have some difficulty supporting the weight too.

Did they scrap her because the chassis didn't fit?

Brown all over is not "weathering", but I think we've said that before.

Are the "steal rails" for pinching it? (Not that anyone would want to!)

I'd be interested to know how the prototype sealed the sliding union between the overhead diesel pipe and the locomotive ;).

Leather flaps like Brunel did :jester:

Then we would end up with a breed of tightrope walking rats!

Not quite enough of it though, apparently.

And now for a different interpretation of madness. This takes the form of the guy (me) who'd love to bid, but may not. US only says the seller, and he no doubt has his reasons. But I've wanted one of these for 25 years! This should have been the tail-car on the Golden Rocket - a train from 1948 that never actually ran. I have 4 other Soho coaches to go with it, all pukka Rock Island Rocket brass. Drat!

And another kind of madness (though I won't embarrass him with specfic name and models)......   My wife recently sold of a load of Triang TT stuff of hers to pay towards a new embroidery machine.  One chap bought a load in some earlier auctions and bought another load (7 items) from our final listings.  He hasn't left feedback yet though I know the goods were signed for and he does leave feedback.  I was just looking at his profile and saw he last left feedback late July for a purchase......... from Cartmel!!!
