EBay madness

Well this item of derision has sold for £4 to a buyer that will appreciate it for the piece of whimsy that it is! Wonder if it’s someone in this very forum lol?

I maintain it’s far more steampunk than the so called Hornby steampunk stuff was. If you’re reading this be sure to show us whatever beast it becomes when it’s mounted on a chassis :)

Can't fault it, even if you didn't want to build something freelance, it's worth £4 for the cab or firebox.

Surely to be properly steampunk, you have to nail an Edison lightbulb to it ?

We made "steampunk" sculptures out of parts from old singer sewing machines which made £65 apiece, the sewing machines were in need of work and got no interest at £10 apiece.

Outstanding, Marine! :D

Is steampunk still "a thing"?

If so, what is it?

Even if you do manage to sell someone a few bits of alarm clock, it feels either rude or unenlightened to ask....

It's goggles and a top hat! Funnily enough - I have both!

And the obligatory leather coat?

Alas, no. But I do have a posh, long black coat by Armani - £15 from a British Red Cross charity shop! Being a member of the model railway community, I didn't know it was Armani when I bought it. My other half educated me later!

Probably sold to Hornby wanting to copy it for their next Steampunk loco!

In my mind it looked like a cross between a Prussian P8 and a Danish R Class.

However I'm happy that it sold and that somebody will take enjoyment from it :)

I have a Bowler and welding goggles :)
We could start our own Steampunk group.....
(Unfortunately the topper in my pic had to go back to the Wardrobe Department afterwards)

there are some genuinely bonkers prices being asked on eBay but for some it seems to be necessary to laugh and point ay any number of things at listings that they have no intention of bidding on anyway.

Now lets not go too far the other way.

I don't see that having no interest in the auctions should bar someone from poking fun at scammers, outrageous dealers and gougers.

I consider this thread to be not only a very good laugh but very useful in that there are now several e-Bay sellers I won't buy from because of their dodgy reputations (all well-earned by being exposed on here). This thread serves a good purpose - it's like a Which? survey of people you should not deal with.

Really useful for those with an unboxed set to sell off now the new sets are coming…;)

You can pick up a boxed set for around £150, others have it for £330, but they don't sell.
I see individual non-powered units go for £30, and I see people trying to sell the power unit for £150 with little success. There are also a couple of pantographs looking for £50 and not going anywhere. So if they are spending £77 just for a torn box, I can't see them making much profit if they are looking to sell. If they just want to complete their set, then it is obviously worth what they are happy to pay for it.

That is not a bad job at lining, unless it is waterslide transfers.

Imagine if someone did one of those 'unboxing' videos (can't stand them!). Consider the disappointment of those watching, when it was finally revealed - after all the box tapping and build-up - that there was nothing in either of them!?

Not so much the videos that bother me but the thinking that has led to them.  If you need to watch a video in order to be shown how to unpack you item without damaging it, then the company that produces the item needs to rethink it's packaging, not to provide you with something so awkwardly packed that you are likely to break it before you've released it from it's bonds.  It's sort of symptomatic of a type of modern thinking that curmudgeons like me are bound to be upset by!

I don't think it's even about how to unpack an item? It's something to do with the physical process of taking something out of a box? A form of 'box porn'?
