Hatton Parkway

Well, last night after pratting about trying to wire one of the signals in and failing miserably I went off in a huff to vegitate with a glass of wine. Why is it that the simple 'ten minute' jobs always turn into epic sagas?

Given that apart from a couple of bald patches and a lack of backscene the layout looks 'nearly finished' I thought that I'd compile a list of things that need to be done to complete it to 'domestic' standard - leaving out anything needed for exhibitions like a lighting rig, curtain, dancing girls.....

Time flies when you're having fun. On the other hand, when you are adding number plates to N scale cars....

The layout now has a backscene as well.

But this lady will have no end of trouble with that ticket machine as I haven't made any N scale credit cards yet!

What a nice layout!

Can I ask how you've aligned the boards? I've been thinking about how to align foam core boards recently and was thinking I'd have to make wooden ends to fit patten makers dowels to - but presumably you've done something different as there's no wood in the construction?

Thick plastic sheet can be inset in the ends to take cabinet makers' dowels (or indeed pattern makers' dowels). You can also inset plywood or similar.

To hold the boards together some high-strength magnets inset from the inner sides are OK for domestic usage.

A quick update, I have been experimenting with moving Haton Parkway. This has thrown up some problems with its foamboard construction.

Whilst it is fine as is for domestic use it would need substantial re-engineering to survive the rigours of exhibition use.

As an example the circuit boards controlling the signals are held in place with sticky pads. They are happy to stay put until you start jolting the baseboards at which point they come away. With a ply top I could screw them in place, but I can't to foamboard. Similarly I cant use a stronger glue as this will mean they cant be taken off without damaging the board. I can't even stick some ply between the foamboard and circuit board as the IR detectors need to be at a certain depth.

So, much as I hate to let people down I felt that I had to withdraw the layout from the Mansfield exhibition as I can't guarantee getting it there in a presentable or operable state. :(

I’ve only just found this thread (leading on from the defunct blog) and have to say that I've enjoyed it immensely. I look forward to seeing the layout finished and in real life.

And yep, I agree with the points made about blogs. I’ve been persisting with my blog but have started to have doubts, am losing my way and find that I’m getting less feedback comment than when each subject had it’s own thread as on the previous version of RMweb. I see JSW also abandoned his blog for a layout thread.

Nearly two months have passed, but at last I've got around to some of those finishing touches...

post-2-1273594147_thumb.jpg

An eye-watering quantity of Pete Harvey's etched pallisade fencing has sprung up around the car park.

post-2-127359425786_thumb.jpg

The car park has also gained a couple of information boards.

post-2-127359433392_thumb.jpg

The station has gained running-in boards and its missing MAS signals.

post-2-127359438288_thumb.jpg

The main line has gained a couple of speed restriction signs.

A lovely spot for watching the trains go by.

P.S. Have a look at my adverts in the classified section - lots of goodies looking for new homes!

Here you go Pete...

A view over Hatton and down the station approach.

Moving along a bit we are now looking over the road bridge at the station platforms.

The pointwork at the station throat.

A view from over the tunnel as a Freightliner intermodal passes through in the evening sun.

Standing on the far bank of the canal gives a good view of the car park.

Hi there. Great layout :D

Just a thought how about non-sticky back velcro superglued to the board and circuit boards instead of sticky pads. Not much thicker than sticky pads and adjustable

Well, the saga of Hatton Parkway starts in the July issue of Hornby Magazine and I was so impressed with Mike Wild's photos of it (see above) that I have reconsidered my decision about making it robust enough for exhibition work.

I shall beef up the structure, add some lighting and then it'll be ready to be let loose on the world!

In the meantime don't forget to buy your HM this month ;)

Hi Ian,

layout is certainly looking great. I tend to stay clear of HM as it's usually a bit kettle-heavy for me, but I may have to pick it up this month.

Out of curiosity how have you secured the PH fencing in place?

Trade secret

You'll have to wait until the October edition for that ;)

Hatton will be making an appearance at the Members' Day at Derby (see this thread for details).

Anyone who fancies playing trains will be welcome to operate the layout and running facilities will be available for N gauge stock if required.

See you all on the 10th July :D

I have started buying tankers for the oil train. They will need the Fina branding replacing with Total in due course.
