Gordon, here in The States, the freight and commuter(heavy rail) trains do not have to stop at the traffic signals(stoplights) or stop signs. Light rail trains do not have to stop at the stop signs, but they must obey the traffic signals(e.g.- in Los Angeles).

Probably similar to the UK

Light Rail trains (Trams to us) have their own aspects on traffic signals, so they can integrate with the regular traffic.

These are the signs we may see:

https://www.theukrules.co.uk/rules/driving/highway-code/tram-signs.html

Note trams have Km/h speed limits, all other road users observe mph!

EDIT Even I am now getting the "403 Forbidden" message on the ones I originally posted so somethings changed somewhere on the site

Nice historic pictures of Syracuse and New York City.

That one of 11th Ave. is so atmospheric with all the shop fronts with goods on show.

It's worth looking through the cityscapes to see what it was like, years gone by.

OT there is a record store on one page with all the latest Victor record releases showcased and an absolute plethora of "Nippers" (His Master's Voice)

I don't know for sure because I have never been to that part of Minnesota. From the looks of these pictures, a bicyclist still has enough room to ride between the parked vehicles and the railroad track(even with a car driving by).

I was thinking more of the gaps between the rails and the road surface, a perfect trap for the unwary cyclist.

More pictures from my native state of California. Here are some pictures of the Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad in Stockton, California. The train is running down Roosevelt Street in a residential neighborhood. Stockton is about 50 miles(80 kilometers) south of Sacramento and about 60 miles(96 kilometers) east of the Bay Area(San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose).

More pictures from Stockton, California. This time it is the Central California Traction Company running down B Street(many streets in this city are named alphabetically). The CCT is a Class III railroad that is jointly owned by the Union Pacific Railroad and the BNSF Railway.
