dave_long
Hi all I'm looking into midland region 3 car class 150s. I know that the /2s were finished in '87. The 3 car units did get renumbered into the 1500xx range but I think they ran around for quite a while in original /1 numbers with /2 centre car. Does anyone know when the first 3 car units started earning their living? I'm from memory thinking it was some time in 1987, but I'm not sure and can't find any photos old enough. I'd be interested to know what livery they round in, I guess the first few would have been provinical light blue for /1 and sprinter livery /2 centre car, but don't think that would have lasted too long? I'm not interested in the 2 prototypes at the moment, as I'm looking into modelling the 3 car set with /2 car. I have a feeling it was discussed on an older rmweb but thats down at the moment, but may have been an earlier version still. Karhedron
I remember seeing a couple at Crewe in 1992 and thinking how unusual they looked (being an innocent lad on my first spotting trip outside the south-east ).
kintbury jon
This is all off the top of my head but the first batch of three car units were of the later batch of the 150/1. (150140-150150?). The 150/1's were eventially repainted into the Provincial livery that the 150/2's had so that they matched. The Centro ones were a later reformation and were from the first lot of 150/1's eventially being renumbered to 150/0's. I'm sure someone can give a more accurate response! giz
My 1989 Platform 5 book lists 150 141, 142, 143, 146 and 147 as three car, in the 1988 book there are no three car sets. All are shown as Provincial livery. There is a photo of 150 142 dated 11/06/88, formed from 52142, 57212 and57142. It is in 150/2 style Sprinter livery. dave_long
Thanks for the info chaps. This was the reason behind Bachmanns 150/1 in sprinter livery then. I think that was the reason behind the discussion on the old rmweb, re why baccy had produced that livery on the /1 and not put it on a /2. If I remember rightly there were old fotopic photos showing a prov /1 with a sprinter /2 centre car, but that seems to have long gone. My father and I seemed to have spotted most of the midlands 150s by about late 86, but the/2 were spread further afield and then were split up. I always found that that years book was the end of the previous year, ie 1988s book was a good reflection of the end of 87, etc due to publication at the start of a year. So I suspect they were put together sometime march 88 onwards then. Dave Edit Found photos of 146 in provincial with sprinter /2 centre car in 88 & 89 http://www.flickr.com/photos/railhereford/6782043671/ Edited May 1, 2012 by dave_long
lyneux
A very interesting thread. I remember seeing these at Worcester SH as a teenager. I've bought a /1 and a /2 to model exactly the same thing but it's way down on the modelling back-log! Although I remember seeing 146 as per the photos you posted, I seem to remember a set or two in uniform sprinter livery (as per the /2s). You've got me digging around on Flickr now.... lyneux
Ok - found a photo of 141. You can just make out the yellow cab of the centre (/2) car on the left of the photo. The livery is definitely "Sprinter" and not "Original Provincial". http://www.flickr.co...57627503053188/ Here is 143 in "Sprinter": http://www.flickr.co...947/6147738686/ And 143 in mixed: http://www.flickr.co...N03/2344285744/ 148 in mixed: and "Sprinter" Edited May 1, 2012 by lyneux
dave_long
Then there is this 150142 in sprinter livery, however the front seems closer to the original prototype livery than the other /1s in this scheme. http://www.flickr.co...in/photostream/ Edit: I think I'm sort of coming to the conclusion that these 3 cars were put together in 1988, especially if they used the later series of /2s which were only finished in 87. With 150147 being a 2 car in Dec 87 and then being a 3 car in prov/sprinter in Oct 88 Edited May 1, 2012 by dave_long
dvdlcs
Hello. Working from memory - as usual and with all the caveats that entails :-) As others have said, a number of Class 150/1 units had a Class 150/2 car inserted in them to make 3-car units. Initially they were the higher number 150/1's (141-150 though not necessarily all of these) and these were targeted for early repainting from the Provincial to Sprinter livery so that the individual coaches would match. This may have been done temporarily in the initial instance, possibly on a seasonal basis (OT: Inverness allocated Class 156s became 3-car units during the summer timetable by disbanding some of the 2-car units then reverted to 2-car units for the winter - at least initially, before becoming more permanent 3-car units). The two orphaned Class 150/2 coaches, 57209 and 57212, were obvious candidates for this plus some other 2-car 150/2's were disbanded to strengthen the 150/1's. I also recall some 3-car 150/2's made up in the same manner, but that may have been later. [These were orphaned as their partners, 52209 and 52212, were both written off after collisions fairly early in their lives. I vaguely recall an additional unit being added to an order, though not that of 150/2, to compensate for their loss.] I'm assuming they couldn't be paired as the 52### coaches had the lavatory, so would be a unit without toilet facilities. The units weren't renumbered; as someone else pointed out, the 1500## range (aside from the two prototypes) was introduced some time later and featured lower numbered 150/1's. Hope this helps, David. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 2, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 2, 2012 I presume you're looking at late 80's formations. Centro/LM have just split up some three car units made from /1,/2,/1 formation and moved them on - mostly to Northern and some to FGW. The /2's have been reformed leading to 150226 being in different liveries for the 2 cars - it's now in NR purple. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/47378-ex-centro-1501-at-picadilly/&do=findComment&comment=538852 Cheers, Mick

Ogauge83A
If anyone wants to have a go at making another three car 150 in N gauge, I have a spare 150/2 body for sale http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111170471707?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649 I also have a 150/1 motorised chassis as spares or repair (it would fit the 150/2 body with slight modifications) its non working atm would sell together if asked Antony
Zunnan
Epic bump, I know, but a cursory search has come up a bit inconclusive. Does anyone have details of the /2 vehicles used within the /1 sets to form the early 3 car units? I've found the later units which were renumbered into the /0 range used in Birmingham but I'm trying to find the /2 vehicles disbanded in '88/'89 to form the early 3 car sets based on 150141-150 as pictured in this thread. I have a record of 3 car 150141 on a Notts to New St service in March '89 passing Piccadilly (Warwickshire) when I was there for the colliery trains clearing the recently closed Baddesley Colliery but my notes don't extend to which /2 was in it. Unfortunately my P5 books which I recorded them in way back then in have long since disappeared.
Bomag
From 1989 P5 150141-143 had 57253, 57212, 52205 150146-147 had 52253, 57205 From 1990 P5 150141-142 had 57205, 57212 150144-146 had 57205, 57253, 52253 150148-149 had 52241, 57241 When delivered the first 50 odd150/2 was split NL (even numbers), NH (odd numbers). Within a couple of years NH started losing units to CF and HA, but then some of the NH needed strengthening and several NL sets were split in late 89 - they were added to the end and not middle. 202+52220 204+57220 206+52222 210+57222 214+52243 216+57243 218+57209 1
