S.A.C Martin
Simon, Slightly digressing from movies, but I recommend the book "Eric Liddell: Pure Gold" by David McCasland. There was a lot more to Eric Liddell than (just) being an Olympic Champion. It'd be good if some of today's athletes followed his example of true sportsmanship. Regards, Peter Got it Peter - as you say, a terrific book. Staple reading for an Old Elthamian, though when I first read about Liddell I was simply an Elthamiam in my second year! I agree, I wish more sportsmen would read it. Particularly poignant its latest publishing this year given the recent ruling regarding drugs cheats. I do wonder what Liddell would have made of it. Back OT, one film I think is severely underrated - The 1941 version of Arnold Ridley's The Ghost Train. Great for the railway enthusiasts among us, but the acting is rather good, and the shots surprisingly well done given it was filmed in wartime. RMweb Premium newbryford Posted May 7, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 7, 2012 "The Italian Job" - typical British do good and then foul it up at the end. "Hang on lads - I've got an idea" "The Great Escape" - for the array of actors and Steve McQueen's bike ride "Live and Let Die" - leaping across the alligators to escape "Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope" - saw it 3 times in it's first week. "Terminator 2" - awesome special effects for it's day "The Dambusters" - celebrating the true story of an epic wartime raid "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" - if only for the "I'm not bad - I'm just drawn this way" from Jessica Rabbit. Cheers, Mick
Allegheny1600
There is absolutely no contest for me. Just on the basis of the writing (and let's face it, it becomes perfect when you factor in the incredible acting, and set design), it has to be Casablanca. There is no other film which could claim to be so perfect as this one. While I do agree this is a true 'Great', for me the film with all the acting, writing, sets and scenes, i.e. the most Perfect: - it would have to be: GWTW!!! (odd I wouldn't describe it as MY favourite, though!?!) THB, I'd probably have trouble naming a top 10 really! Cheers, John E.
LIRR
One of my favourites is Close Encounters, especially when the little boy says "Toys!"
squeaky
Well my no.1 has to be "It's a Wonderful life" the most memorable line being "when a bell rings an Angel gets it wings" from 1946 Secondly it would be "Second hand Lions" Robert Duvall and Michael Caine. RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted May 8, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 8, 2012 An eclectic mix Harvey - anything with Jimmy Stewart but this is a gem! Battle of Britain - for the flying sequences alone but Suzanna York's bum runs a close second The Untouchables - Sean Connery's irish cop is so overacted but brilliant none the less The Graduate - for those with teenage angst Gladiator - for the music alone Salmon fishing in the Yemen - OK so only just released but a mix of House of Cards and salmon fishing cant be bad Blazing saddles - out puns even Airplane and so Un PC! Zulu - what can I say about that? The Ladykillers - an Ealing classic and worth it for the railway sequences alone Phil
KevinWalsh
Blazing saddles - out puns even Airplane and so Un PC! Zulu - what can I say about that? Phil I have to concur with these 2 choices Blazing Saddles - the beans scene still has me reduced to a fit of the giggles Zulu - Nigel Green's soft spoken performances ("Be quiet now Sir, there's a good gentleman, you'll upset the lads") Edit for a slight mis-quote
