Hi All,

I have finally found the time to post my new project, Factory Lane Depot, on here. I know, its another TMD layout, but it was the best option within the available space.

The layout started about three weeks ago with construction of baseboards and then tracklaying. although the track is laid it will need to be lifted in sections as it does not have dcc dropper wires or point motors installed yet. Im hoping to possibly take the layout to shows but that will probably be a long time in the future, if at all.

In total the layout is about 10' x 1'6" but the scenic section is only 8' long. Here is the trackplan

And the progress so far

any suggestions are welcome

Finally got some work done on the layout.

I made a start on wiring up the track but half way through I got bored. So I scratchbuilt a fuelling point.

It goes between the stores building and the fuel tanks:

Also, on the subject of scratchbuilding, I got round to designing (and starting to build) the loco shed. The 3d model made on a computer will help when it comes to dimensions.

and here's the progress so far

I have only built one wall to see if i could find a good construction technique, and I ran out of corrugated plasticard. I need to get some more (plus brick pattern) when I am near to a model shop. Until then I will have no choice but to go back to wiring. :resent:

fuel point looks good, nice scratchbuilding technique.

The EWS 37 looks very grubby compared to the DBS 66's nice contrast with the new/old effect. Although my TMD days are over , I will watch with interest.

Rule 1 for fitting point motors: Take the stock off the layout...

Forgot this whilst I was cutting the hole for this with a jigsaw:

So this happened.

post-12987-0-19433400-1340391555_thumb.jpg

Idiot.

Luckily it doesn't look like I've broken anything too expensive, but still won't forget next time - still got to cut six more holes!

Wow how lucky we're you? The worst I've had so far was I decided to run in our dutchess class one night on our big table that we used to have then the Inlaws popped in. The dog we had at the time went nuts, caught the controller wire all track and loco flew about 20ft. Smashed the roof into 6 bits. Still to fix it. Every time I get it out to fix I just get so gutted fealing. It quickly returns to its box. It's our only kettle and my son wants to hear it chuff, chuff, chuff. So will need to fix it soon as I plan to get a decoder reblown to give him what he wants.

All the best with what looks to be a good layout forming.

Best regards,

Mark

Hi Mark, I hope that you are able to fix the loco, it would be a shame for it to go to waste. Something similar once happened to me, but it was my fault - I accidentally drove a loco of the side of a board and pulled the whole lot down including all the stock on the layout, but the most serious damage was done to a vey old loco (of GWR design) which had a snapped axle and body shell. And then there was the resin buildings...

Oggy1953: in an ideal world I would have used SEEPs (+ hand built track) but I had some of these lying around, so there was no good reason not to use them. For the rest of the cutting I think I will take the board in question outside, where it is generally safer to wield power tools.

cutting such a large hole for Peco solenoids is not necessary. If you use the extended pin type then all you require is a slot. Of course everything depends a little on your baseboard, chipboard disintegrates when you wield power tools, one of the many reasons why it is not recommended as a baseboard material.

It does disintegrate but I find that makes it a bit easier to work with. I was using a jigsaw on slow mode which probably improved the chance of cutting a (relatively) neat hole:

There's only a bit at the top where the chipboard ripped a little, but otherwise it turned out fine.

Hi Alex,

To be honest I need to build a new footplate roof (is that the correct term?), I'm hopeless at anatomy. I think I've an idea how to add the rivet detail, but I'm not sure if any of my black paints will match the rest, so all black areas will probably need a respray. :-(

There have been bodies on that famous auction site, but im determined not to be lazy and do it myself.

Best regards,

Mark

Mark,

I wouldn't worry too much about a slight mismatch. Any discrepencies can just be disguised with a bit of light weathering. Even "clean" locos would be a little dirty on hard to reach places, like the roof.

Good luck with the scratchbuilding anyhow,

Alex

Finally! Some progress!

After a weekend under the layout, the track is all wired up at last (but no point motor action).

Testing would show that I didn't muck up, though I might still find something that will not work or short the whole layout.

The first moves:

The fact that the layout works (so far) means that I hopefully haven't screwed up the control box that I built...

Nothing's caught fire yet so that must be a good sign. :)

Hi all,

I have finally started to build the scenery on Factory Lane. So far there's just a small polystyrene embankment and some hard standing on board 1 (That's the scenic board closest to the fiddle yard, and board 4 is the furthest). The embankment has been there for some time but the hard standing is new. It is made from Greyboard (basically just 1mm thick cardboard) and although it may not be brilliant it has a good texture and colour for concrete.

post-12987-0-70888600-1342112797_thumb.jpg

I have also started to paint the rail sides. Some are already painted from use on a previous layout but I will probably repaint these.

Here are a few pictures of the running session to test the track with some details on the concrete apron:

post-12987-0-65753700-1342113664_thumb.jpg

Another thing: Does anybody have any ideas on how to extend the concrete hard standing to between the rails? Whilst it is possible to do with greyboard it can look quite bad unless done really carefully, and even then it looks a bit strange.

Any suggestions are welcome,

Alex

Evening all,

Just uploading a few pictures of light building modifications on Factory Lane. I have modified the blue factory on board 4 (far right). Basically what I have done is add some pipes etc. around the base of the model and also changed the sign to a McKELLAR one from a scalescenes kit.

In that last photo the pipes look slanted but in reality they are straight (I think).

Cheers

Hi All,

Until now progress has been slow but it is now beginning to speed up.

I managed to get over to a model shop at the weekend where I picked up ballast and plasticard allowing me to do all the ballasting, weather it and continue with the shed construction. The shed now has all the exterior walls and is just missing the roof and the interior 'steel' framework.

The shed is currently in two pieces in order to allow me to easily access the inside walls. Unfortunately the plasticard seems to be warping so some parts might need to be replaced in the future?

Next job is to finish the polystyrene embankment behind those retaining walls...

Regards,

Alex

Nice layout, keep up the great progress :)

Thanks for the comments, Sutton. It's good to know that there is somebody reading this topic.

I have done a bit of detailing behind the shed-nothing much, just an AWS box, some old sleepers, a rusty rail and bushes.

(Ignore the lack of shed roof!)

I don't think it looks to bad, but that is my biased opinion. I'll leave it up to others to decide that.

Cheers,

Alex

Been trying photos with different lighting effects (holding a light source (ie. torch) over models at night to create shadows and lower light levels).

Hi all:

Not too much to report this time. I have finished the area behind the shed with a small scratchbuilt hut that is something to do with the fuel tanks-Pump house perhaps? (Possibly a bit small for that?)

Also continued with grass at the front of the layout though some of it might be concreted over to make way for some portacabins - this is just a possibility.

The rear embankment and retaining wall is nearly complete-I just need a bit more brick plasticard. That high bit near the end is for a bridge (You can see its position on the plan at the start of this topic).

post-12987-0-09962100-1343915369_thumb.jpg

I have also tried to plan out aforementioned bridge with a scrap of wood. Whilst it does open up many possibilities for videos and photos etc. I think it looks a bit out of place. Hopefully it will grow on me: I can't take it out because I have already built the rear retaining wall how it is. Maybe some careful surgery could remedy this if I do decide to not have a bridge there.

After looking at the layout I think the bridge will work so it is staying. Off to do some shunting on Factory Lane, will post pics later
