Burnthouse Lane

Hello,

thought i'd introduce you all to my latest project.( all other projects abandoned and stuffed in the loft)

The baseboards are 3 side-by-side rack systems from Argos, used for tool storage or whatever. they are 3ft each in length and 18in wide.

The scene is WR mainline between Par and Burngullow, or somewhere near by, with a cross-over to allow clay trains/freight to divert off onto branchlines / sidings.

Typically being set in the late 80's to very early 90's common traction is 50's on passenger / parcel services in and out of the county, aswel as the occasional clay trip. 47's on cross-country services and local DMU's between Panzance and Plymouth, or Panzance Newton Abbot. Aswel as special services for the final days of frieght operations for Falmouth Docks.

A few prototype shots

For the gorse bushes and shrub land, will look something similar to that of Burngullow ( pretty much anywhere in Cornwall infact ) thick gorse and rustic hedge rows.

I think the NSE 50 will look the knee's with a rake of seacows and shark brake van. but more stock is a little way off yet ;)

Hi Jack

I await progress with interest.

Hopefully I'll see this one completed.

The project certainly has great potential,as there was far more traffic around then, including the mail trains,3/4 coach locals with 50's on,possibly the Chacewater cement, coal for Drinnick Mill & possibly stretching the era milk from StErth......I'm not sure when that finished, but it's your layout so you can do what you want.

Anyway ,good luck & I shall follow with interest

Cheers Bill

PS I'm glad you're back into modelling & have found the 'inspiration ' again...........I think we all lose heart now & again

Also....

It was your pic's of the junction at Burngullow, between the main & Parkindillack lines, posted earlier on the Railways in Cornwall section (shown above) that gave me the 'inspiration' of how to fill the gap between the head shunt & main line in front of the bridge on my layout

Cheers Bill

Bill, thanks so much for the kind and very helpful comments, I think your right about stretching the "time scale" of the Cornish freight workings, i was just sorting through my stock and I found a grotty class 25 and some BR brown box vans, which I instantly thought Roskear branch!! And as you said the st. Erth milk would be a must.

Glad the Burngullow pictures were of good use to you, I had a fantastic day sat on the roof of the car photographing the trains, made a nice change from the hustle and bustle of everyday routine, also contributing to the birth of this new project!

Thanks again.

Jack.

Ps: promise to finish this one ;)

Have done a little more planning on Burnthouse Lane this evening, conclusion, is to have the scenic section extended a little either side. Then have a circular double loop (mainline) which enters into the fiddle yard. then back round into the opening of the scenic section. for a continuous run design, this will allow much larger traffic formations to be run, such as 6 coach cross-country trains, intercity mk1's or 2's and mk3 sleepers. then class 50 on local stoppers formed of just 3 mk2's. Then freight flows can be enlarged.

All in all the total size will be 8ft x 4ft.

As im not going to rush into the building side of the layout, this will allow time for me to purchase all the appropriate track, and point work.

I'll attatch a design once completed.

Did anyone spot the station waiting room in these pics haha

It looks very much like a bush ;)

It's a good little feature for burnthouse, a derelict building on the line-side. Lurking in the bushes.

I'm now about to do some work on the layout, and give it a test run make sure it's all smooth. But first it's time to attack wood with saw!!

Jack.

Ps: more photos will be added tonight.

This evening, i have made a prototype of Burnthouse Lane using an old project that never took off, the idea for the prototype is to change and adapt for the actaul layout build, but it wont be far off from the prototype. obviously just bigger.

so here's a few shots of what to expect later on through the project stage...

The Railways Of Cornwall section has really helped inspire this project, there was so many idea's running round my head, like Hayle Wharves, Falmouth Docks, Burngullow, but my intention is to create something Slap Bang in the middle to allow all types of stock moves to be seen and have a wide veriaty of loco's. Also the part of railway modelling i enjoy the most is scenic shrub land, with a mixture of rustic accessories, such as un-used railway buildings and huts. and rusty rails/sleepers.

So there will be plenty to keep me busy.

( The part i hate is the base-board building hence the 9million unfinished projects... but i'll have to get my grandad to do the job for me ;) at least it will be strong and rigid.

This is an interesting project. I look forward to watching this develop.

Just thought I'd mention, but did you know your clay hood wagons are incorrect for the period you're modelling. I'm not an expert on clay wagons, but I know they were withdrawn by late 80s - early 90s. I think what you need are CDA wagons.

Hi thanks,

Yeah the hoods are a little dated but seen loads of pictures of class 50's working clayhoods in Cornwall, dated around '85. But I'm willing to push date boundaries for the project, such as cement working and milk rakes from st. Erth and drump lane. (all stopped around late 70's early 80's.)

Afternoon,

I have some progress (actaully quite alot) on Burnthouse Lane,

Built the new Basboard...nice and strong, and rigid. recycled the backboard from Lavander Lane as that was looking too good to chuck away.

fixed the track down, and cross over, ballested 90% complete, and weathered the rails lightly. Added greenary and grass and general junk you'd expect on the railways,

Railway fence seperating utility yard, from the track-bed.

Also bought 2x new Dapol 6wheel milk tanks, the same used for the St. Erth milk factory and milk sidings that once ran in Cornwall.

Been practicing my gorse bush techniques aswel, for that traditional Cornish look.

Next on the to-do-list is to continue with the junk / utilty yard. i was think perhaps turning it into an old GWR good depot, that is now just a place for railway clutter and junk such as rusty rails, rotten sleepers etc...

Not sure what Speed Limit would be appropriate for this perticular section of mainline, possibly 50MPH?

Thats all the progress for now, i will create a gallery for Burnthouse Lane, with all the pictures and headings etc.

Thanks for looking,

thoughts/comments and feedback always welcome.

The fore-ground ( yard space ) Is going to be filled with a warehouse, and lorries, a small distribution centre similar to Holmans or Drump lane, Redruth. With the old track in place but concerted over and weeds overgrown.

Should keep me busy for a while.

Haha, yes will finish this one. I know I can be flakey when it comes to starting new projects, but this one I'm very passionate about.

Bonus, the sun is out hopefully I can get the layout out in the garden.

Edit: it's been raining for most of the day. So no pictures!

But been researching about 150's and my Bachmann edition is a little modern for burnthouse lane. If I remove the "Regional Railways" logo and remove the snow/object deflectors the unit will be set back to the late 80's. Rather than late 90's.

The part of the layout I'm concentrating on is the yard, as mentioned before, this will be the site where rail freight was once distributed from the steam age right up to the mid-70's where it closed to rail traffic, now the smaller freight loads are manageable for just a few lorry loads a week. The site is concrete and full of rusty overgrown wasteland, the rails are still visibal, The lorries distribute sand and aggregates for the development of the busy Rail and road network. Rail enthusiasts are often hanging around spotting the trains and taking photographs. This opens up opportunities to run special working into the yard but more often than not it's just full of piles of sand and turning lorries. Maybe a few rotten wagons are left behind still awaiting to be cut up for scrap. And a brake van left for the occasional marshalling job for the near by clay dries.

Weekend off from work, going to make a start on the yard.

Concrete surface and hidden rails (think I'll use plasta and weather with a grey/off White wash then rust on the rail heads.

Afternoon...

alot of 'jobs' done on Burthouse Lane today... filled in a few gaps with shrubs and more thick gorse bushes. Plastered the yard floor, and mixed in a hint of grey.

Then added the rusted rails and allowed to dry. Then, once dried, and the rails had set into the plaster, I then cut to size some mesh, and made a fence and gate combo, for the siding enterance. with the gates in the open position. Once this had dried, i then weathered the yard enterance (road end) with black tyre marks that lorries had left whilst turning. as i progressed with the layout, the yard looked more and more like an old clay dry site. so i continued with the clay theme. But the yard is pretty much open to themes's, such as clay, sand, coal, and crates. or even Beer Kegs (yess please)... :D

I weathered the S1 LandRover in a dusting of white powder.

post-13209-0-02511000-1339858980.jpg

I then added the Second Siding where the ex-BR brake van has been sat since the early Diesel days. The brake van once marshelled the clay trains into the near by mill.

The siding is now overgrown and out of use for rail traction.

The pictured don't really do the update any justice, soon as (if) the nice weather appears i will get Burnthouse Lane out in the Garden.

I've been thinking about making the fiddle yards, but to be honest im enjoying the scenics too much to worry about them at the minute.

Possibly might have a go at doing some more tonight.

Thanks for looking,

comments always welcome.

Hate to say it Jack, it has been mentioned on your other layouts, but not convinced by the fence.

It would need some uprights and the gates would need posts for the hinges.

Other than that it's coming on nicely.
