How Much Do We Spend On Layouts and Stock

My wife has recently worked out that I spend about £25 to £30 on average per week (this'll works out more in Euros). This spend includes everything from materials, stock and literature. I don't think this is bad value as it keeps me out of the pub. I wonder what everyone else spends? I'd like to think that my figure is below average so I can persuade her to increase my budget!!!

Response would be gratefully received!

Average spend per month on e-bay, £100; average on magazines, model and prototype, £20/month; periodic purchases of paint/small items, average £5/month; randomly distributed purchase of larger items from web/model shops, probable average £30/month over the year; total about £155 a month. I don't have to justify it to anybody but myself. Sometimes it seems too much, but I buy stuff now as I won't be able to afford much when I retire.

I can easily spend £100 in one visit to the local shop. Most weekends I drop in because it is just as much a social thing as an opportunity to empty the wallet. There seems to be so much new stuff coming out at the moment that my wallet is being asphixiated. Books are also a big drain on the wallet.

I haven't got a clue to be honest - it depends on show attendances, what's currently needed, books coming out which interest me, stuff likely to disappear quickly and so on. Railex I spent about £90 excluding admission and food etc, recently I bought 3x RTP Dapol signals (including postage from Cornwall so c.£80), and I'm not going to admit how much SWAGday cost but as it included some purchases with Mr Trerise plus building a module plus the diesel to get there, plus the meal the night before all I can say is that I'm glad I don't have a mortgage to pay off on the house!

It is frightening to those who do not understand. Which is why I wouldn't let my wife near a calculator.

We used to have a big mortgage but when that was all paid off we realised just how much "free" income we then had to spend on other pleasures. We made a sort of rule 33% on each of our respective "hobbies" and 33% to joint pleasures, no questions asked. From the "joint pleasures account" we pay for holidays and recently completed a £150K extension - that gives you some idea of what I am able to spend before eyebrows are raised.

But isn't this more a factor of income and a proportion of that income rather than it is of simply what we spend? A family with a total income that has to be spent on mortgage, kids, cars, mobile phones, going to the pub, sports, wider family is bound to be much less than a couple who are close to retirement, at the peak of their earning power both earning in excess of £130K + bonuses, where the kids have flown and are well settled... It is all relative.

In the end it is all about how much you get from the hobby - That might be a lot from a little or a little from a lot, its just lifestyle we choose.

I could spend a £million (if I had it and chose to do so - no I don't waste money on lotteries or any form of gambling) but would I get any more enjoyment from the hobby? So in the end it is not about money.

I go through 'phases' - like many others I've spent '0000s on bits over the years, but I've not really been properly into railways for a good few yrs so spent very little since then, perhaps the odd Hattons bargain here and there. Money just goes elsewhere to savings, living costs, cars and the usual other commitments, socialising, holidays etc.

Probably not a 'hobby' but I like to get hammered with my mates, and model railways are very good value in comparison. A big lads night in an average city with say pre-drinks/bar crawl/club/strip club/casino can easily be £150+, so to have a sound loco which will (hopefully) last for ever is much, much cheaper in the long run, if not as hedonistic!!

I'm sure others who are also into hobbies like golf, skiing, horse riding or kite surfing etc can confirm...at least with this hobby you can only spend what you want to, there's no minimum requirement to spend X amount upfront to start yourself off, so it's all down to your budget and 'wish list' of rolling stock!

Cheers,

My net cost is probably zero and has been for years, as income from the sale of unwanted models and the occasional article goes towards new purchases. That way you don't end up with a load of old festering tat that'll only ever end up as someone else's problem to sort out, and my narrow minded modelling views mean I've never been tempted with multiple releases of the same liveried new and "weveneverhaditsogood" model.

I think I'd prefer to spend my money on a night out with James' mates....

I work in 0e and there is not much available off the shelf, so most of my spend is things like card, balsa and paint from the local artists' suppliers (claiming my student discount) also my layout has got as big as it is ever going to be ... but ... I have been saving up for a new loco from a German artisinal producer which is about €650 - ouchy - for the kit. I partly funded that by selling three locos that are surplus on eBay. At the same time I am running a year-long project to upgrade my coaching stock, no-one makes scale length Austrian n.g. coaches so I have commissioned etched brass sides and bought enough second hand Fleischmann chassis, so this is going to be an expensive year maybe about £1500 but last year only spent about £80 (club subs and mags).

I've been keeping a record recently because I knew that I had a big item coming up, I don't think that I spend an awful lot in an average year - and there is the personal benefit of all the fun! .

Too much, but not nearly as much as I should like. I have my eye on a set of 6 wheel coaches. The kits alone are going to cost £115 a piece and I need (want) at least four. It doesn't bear thinking about.

I don't spend very much because I have very little to spend; my kids are not independent yet, Mrs B is disabled and all I got for Christmas was a pay cut. I think if I am lucky I might spend £20 a month.

Due to lack of space at present I have become a armchair modeller most of the time so mags are the top items each month. I do put a little by towards new locos as classes I always wanted are now on the shelves so I aim to get them for years to come. overall across the year about 15.00 a month on mags and 30.00 put by plus any tips I get from work , but when I get space again!
