Rumour has it we're in for a wet day tomorrow so hopefully will get something done!!!!!

Probably finish off the Exeter end board or do the platforms or fit the fencing/walling/hedges or the old goods yard.........

Watch this space..

Hi All

One advantage of grotty weather in the summer is that I can get a bit of modelling done,so after a busy show with Penhallick Junction on Saturday & Sunday I was able to model rather than garden.....

I filled in some of the gaps in the ballast in the lifted area & back towards & behind the platform & up to the embankment.

Static grassed a bit of the embankment that hadn't been done.

Then drilled some holes to fit fence posts.....

post-7844-0-09037500-1369857525_thumb.jpg

Then fitted posts.....I was going to superglue them in but the glue went off too quick in the plaster so I used neat PVA instead

post-7844-0-63065600-1369857701_thumb.jpg

post-7844-0-20414500-1369857721_thumb.jpg

post-7844-0-48760600-1369857775_thumb.jpg

I had noticed that in the pictures that I have ,the post spacings are different.

In some cases the posts are close together,& in others the spacing is greater with one or sometimes two spacers holding the wires to their set distances apart.

This is why the post spacings are different.

Next was threading the individual strands of wire through the predrilled posts.....

I use strands of copper wire from a multi core copper cable.....

I started by just pushing the wire through each hole.......The wire bent, kinked,I couldn't see it......

I then tried tinning the end of the wire after doubling it.....

In the end ,after much searching I found a needle fine enough to go through the holes......

The daft thing is I can hardly see the wire....It took a close up shot to see it on camera...

post-7844-0-63661000-1369858357_thumb.jpg

I had considered not putting the wire in due to time constraints....However, if I don't do it now it would be impossible to add later & as the embankments were not as overgrown then as now I think it would be an obvious omission especially in close up pictures.

So next couple of evenings finishing that off & then I must sort out the platforms.

The fencing looks very good Bill.

Sorry if you have already mentioned it but what is the platform core constructed with...foam board?

I never know what to use for platforms..!

Hi Ralph & johnpaddy22

Thanks for the comments...

The problem is trying to get all necessary work done on the layout while the SUN is shining outside.

The end of August seems awful close!!!!

Hi Jack,

I didn't use foamboard for the platform.....

The platform faces are strips of hardboard cut to a suitable height.

Before fixing down strips of Slaters brick plasticard are glued to the outer face, with the top few courses stepped out by adding more thin strips.

The strips of hardboard are drilled at approx 2 to 3 inch centres & very fine panel pins nail it to the baseboard. If you don't pilot drill the pins cause a lump to form in the face which is visible.

A liberal dose of PVA is then run along the bottom of the platform edge.

When dry I infilled the platform with Knauf Polyfoam(an extruded rather than expanded polystyrene).I used this partly as I had some but also the next stage is less messy & gives a flatter surface.Ordinary polystrene can be used but it is much harder to get a nice flat surface when completing the next stage. One would probably have to fix a layer of card or similar prior to fixing the final top surface.

The next step is to level off the infill.....I used a hacksaw blade just sawing using the platform edges as a guide.

Then I topped the main surface off with fine sandpaper....I should have used a contact adhesive but tried using PVA with poor results....The only problem with contact adhesive is you've got to get it right first time!!!! you can't reposition.

I haven't fixed the edge paving slabs yet.....A lot of thought has gone into this as they need to be reasonably robust to withstand a bash or two when rail cleaning ,but I shall probably go for individual card slabs,or maybe plasticard ones....As I said I've not yet finally decided.

A couple of pics which I hope show what I mean.....

post-7844-0-72828700-1369943204_thumb.jpg

Any suggestions re the slabs gratefully welcomed...The problem being they are all curved edges & I want to give the impression of the thickness of these slabs...

Having just reread your question I've probably gone into more detail than you actually asked.....But I've typed it now!!!!!

As regards a source of polyfoam....I believe B & Q certainly used to sell it but whether they still do now I don't know.Otherwise a specialist insulation supplier  or maybe a builders merchant though the problem there might be having to buy a pack rather than just one slab.

Anyway hope this has been of some use...

Cheers Bill

Appreciate the detailed reply Bill.

It looks a good technique and versitile for cambers/curve allawances.

I will have to try something similar as 'RTR' in my opinion is limited and a little dictating, similar to what you said about the points at the weekend your free to have them at any angle you wish.

All the best.

Hi All

Went to the Exeter show on Saturday....Thoroughly enjoyed the show as usual....

But one of the aims was to take the train to Crediton & take a few pictures.....

About 100 later.....

Any way I got some nice shots which will help with the feel of the place...Although the station itself hasn't changed much since we lived in Crediton in the late '70's apart from the colour scheme, the surroundings certainly have!!!!

Any way I took some pictures that will help me model more buildings as the layout develops...

Initially at Hayle show in August it will be very basic....If I get that far!!!!!!

Any way the last couple of evenings have been spent trying to sort the platform edgings.

I had considered using Metcalfe self adhesive slabs, then using plasticard.

I finally settled on cereal packet card.

I drew a randomish pattern of slab widths with a pencil, pressing hard so I would get a groove.

This was then cut into 12mm strips (approx 3ft deep slabs).

I had planned to use copydex to glue the card down with but the tub had gone hard & I had no means of getting some more (SWMBO is using our vehicle all week)(I cycle to & from work).

So I used PVA.

I did a sample length last night which seems to have stuck OK so I did most of the rest this evening.

Any way some pics.....

The first one shows the phases & the second after fixing down

Spare time over the weekend was used to finish 'wiring' the fence, & I also started fixing down some bushes etc by the bridge.....

post-7844-0-30044000-1370376706_thumb.jpg

Hopefully over the next few days I shall be able to finish the platform edging, paint the platforms & then make a start on the yard.

One thing I did notice but didn't model as I wasn't aware was how much of a slope front to back there is of the platforms!!

Hi All

Well this evening as I had a bit of unexpected spare time I took the backscenes off to paint blue.....I shall post pics of them when reinstalled. As things stand I may not have time before August to fit the proper photo backscenes so sky blue will have to do....

I also spent a bit of time detailing the lane.... But until the PVA dries it's not a pretty sight so pics tomorrow or Sunday on that.

I did take some pics of the Farm buildings from an angle not possible when the backscene is in position.....

More scenic work is needed to finish off but hopefully you get the picture

There's loads more I will do to this board but for the time being I'm going to have to concentrate on the middle board which apart from platforms & track is almost bare....

Hi All

A bit more progress this weekend....

finished fitting the fences at the Exeter end.....A real pain threading the wire.

I also added a bit more dry stone walling running across the field from the lane gateway.....

Although painted it needs matching in to the other walling.....

Also started to clad the station building with  Slaters brick plasticard.

First the lane & wall....

Liking the single track on the double track formation

Hi

Thanks for that.....

Ideally I would have liked to model a longer section....But not got the space...

It's something I've always wanted to model as it is typical of the railway from mid 60's onwards.....

I'm hoping in time to add to the scene but I don't want to overdo it as it would spoil the effect.....

Hi All

Got on with the station building this week.....

It's nearly finished now....The door to paint & tone down the colours a bit & neaten up the edges of some of the painting....As usual it looked quite good 'till I took some pictures of it which showed all the blemishes!!!!!

Any way....A couple of pictures show it before painting.....

& an overall picture of it roughly in position....

As you can see there is work to be done to get the weathering 'right' but that can be done in the evenings through the week.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get on with the middle board, first building a plinth to sit the station building on & some sort of approach road/ramp.

Hi All

Spent a reasonable time working on the layout today & sorted out a couple of areas I wasn't sure about.

Fiddled about with the paintwork on the station building....A bit of weathering & Scalescenes signs should sort it out....

Anyway it now has a door fitted!!!!!

The real pics were taken on my recent trip to the Exeter Show.......

The windows seem to have steamed up overnight...As it is all stuck together now sadly it wiil have to stay as it is for now.

Then I sited the coal merchants shed......

This had somehow twisted so I was abit concerned how it would look when on the layout.....But a bit of building up & piling of ballast seems to have sorted this problem.....

As I may not have time to build the signalbox I have decided if not to use Largin's signal box which just needs final painting & fixing of the detail.....Not ideal but I do need to have a signal box

post-7844-0-43853700-1371414106_thumb.jpg

I also started the fencing from the level crossing to the backscene (I cheated using  a Ratio pack I bought ages ago), & the fencing at the far end of the yard....This will be Ratio again but this time southern style concrete post & slab type.

I also used some greenscene textured paint in the yard area but probably didn't use it properly as I'm not happy with the result.

One bit I was pleased with is the bit of track inset into the platform that you can glimpse in one of the pics....I have weighted this & the platform down so only took the weights off briefly for these pics so will post better pics when the glue has dried....

Hi D820 & Ralph

Thanks for the comments above.....

Hopefully I can get it presentable by then.....

At last I am beginning to feel I'm progressing.....

A couple of good sessions should crack it.....

Once the baseboard is covered then the finer details can be applied if there's time, but at least it should be basicly complete

Cheers Bill

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi All

Been away for a while so not as much progress as I'd hoped.

However last week I bought a Metcalfe terraced house kit to go by the level crossing, following on down the road  from the signal box.

They are good kits, well made, good instructions & look nice when finished....Need gutters, rainwater pipes & a bit of weathering to finish off....However in time I shall scratch build a terrace to replace it......Time is the problem....

Anyway a few pictures...

post-7844-0-30304800-1372709356_thumb.jpg

post-7844-0-20624600-1372709373_thumb.jpg

Also started to add the station fencing...Ratio's excellent products....

post-7844-0-14748100-1372709445_thumb.jpg

This weekend I started the industrial building that will form the backscene behind the yard.

It is inspired by the Shippams meatpaste processing plant that once stood next to the green shed.

It is not a copy....just hopefully gives a feeling/impression of it.

Usual construction method of the shell showing first the outside....

post-7844-0-43704200-1372709694_thumb.jpg

Then the inside....

post-7844-0-67307700-1372709752_thumb.jpg

Normally I just stick Slaters plasticard or whatever to the shell....But this leaves a problem with filling in the window reveals. This time I cut the sheet to shape & then used the waste that where the windows are folded back & superglued back to form the reveals....

post-7844-0-90607300-1372709950_thumb.jpg

post-7844-0-03731300-1372709964_thumb.jpg

The same method was also used for the 'sand paper' mock rendering.

As usual I used copydex to glue the cladding to the shell.

The roof was slaters plasticard, gutters from Evergreen half round section, pipes to be added when I find the section I use.....

post-7844-0-41035500-1372710264_thumb.jpg

Then a coat of primer....

post-7844-0-07578600-1372710311_thumb.jpg

post-7844-0-59077000-1372710323_thumb.jpg

Ihave done other bits & pieces...Made a start on the fencing, added a bit more greenery & found a model stone cottage that I built years ago from a Wills kit, which will sit between the signalbox & the terrace houses.....

Will try to take more pics later in the week......

Anyway,thats all for now

Hi All

Just a quick note to say that updates will be sporadic for a while as my computer seems to only work occasionally & when it feels like....ie. hardly at all & then only for about 3 mins.....

So updates will be by SWMBO's laptop when access is available but pics may be a problem...

Hi All

Seem to have found the problem with the computer.....RMWeb layout topics !!!!!

Since the introduction of the thumbnails on the LHS it has always been slow loading those pages......

So, as long as I view layout topics as a guest.....No thumbnails ,I can do everything else any where....even post!!!!!

Anyway a bit of progress this week......

The 'Shippams' building has been painted, part of the window frames added...Glazing & rainwater pipes to be added & a door & it's finished.....

post-7844-0-52916000-1373224635_thumb.jpg

I can then fix it down when the above jobs are done.

The next task was to do a bit more to the level crossing area.

I had already 'landscaped' the area but the contours didn't suit;So out with the knife & the terrain was altered & grooves cut for the walls to sit in....

post-7844-0-36593000-1373224852_thumb.jpg

Then the walls were made, test fitted & clad with brick & stone plasticard.....

post-7844-0-48010600-1373224961_thumb.jpg

Then the cottage I mentioned in a previous post was placed in position to see if it looked 'right'....

post-7844-0-71433500-1373225102_thumb.jpg

post-7844-0-89391500-1373225119_thumb.jpg

Previously I have had problems filling in any gaps when digging grooves,so this time I mixed some sieved soil with diluted PVA & filled in the trenches with this mixture...

post-7844-0-99925000-1373225260_thumb.jpg

What it looks like I won't know 'till it dries....

I then put the walls in position, glued the houses down, bedded the cottage in more filler, added the fencing behind the signal box & placed the 'box in position for the photos

post-7844-0-56900300-1373225425_thumb.jpg

I feel I'm getting somewhere now...Most of the boards are now clad in scenery so I shall be able to get it presentable rather than finished.....

I shall have to leave it after next week though as I have to prepare Penhallick for Barnstaple on July 27th & Plymouth a fortnight later.

Anyway that's all for now

Cheers Bill
