treggyman
Hi Bill, Good to see that you are making progress. Yes, the Mazak is the problem with the chassis, but there is a design fault as well (in my opinion) - there are fixing holes at the narrowest part of the metal. Any flaw in the material will cause the chasiss to break here. anyway, this has been done to death elsewhere (as David has mentioned). I do like you solution though! Have a good Christmas Hi Richard I certainly hope to have a good Christmas & wish you & yours the same...... All the best Bill
treggyman
Hi All Yesterday's free time was spent building a new traverser....Pics tomorrow if I get to it.. Anyway ,today's spare time was taken up by masking..... Santa very kindly brought me the new Bachmann Shove Duff 47710.... However on 14 3 91 I saw 47704 Dunedin hauling a Tunny & a Grampus through Lostwithiel on it's way to Plymouth. So....With multi era's in mind I thought it would fit in with an earlier timescale on Penhallic ,but a late time on Creedyford...... I find I have to be in the 'mood' to get the airbrush out & like to do things in batches ,so a ViTrains '47 & a Hornby 121 were also masked up ready for spraying.... 47704 only really needs the yellow cab roofs respraying to black ,but the 121 needs respraying from Chiltern blue to rail blue & the ViTRAINS 47 needs spraying from Corus silver to rail blue..... Any way ,hopefully I shall get time tomorrow to do the deed Cheers Biil NB Edit was necessary because I pressed a wrong key & sent the post before I meant to Edited December 25, 2012 by treggyman
treggyman
Hi All Just a quick update on slow progress.... spraying has gone OK...A pic of Dunedin appears on my Penhallick thread...I shall post here when it's finished.....The body of the 121 is done & the first coat of the cab front warning yellow applied...The '47 awaits numbering & weathering plus touching up the overspray & fitting the details from the detailing pack. Meanwhile the new traverser is made & set up ready to have the location holes drilled & track laid.... It's narrower than the old one & slides on ballbearing drawer runners ex Screwfix... Seems to work OK.....Spent part of the day removing the track from the old one.....Seemed a shame to waste it & I'll never use the old traverser again. Working it out I'll be able to get 10 tracks on it (the old one had 11 but was very unstable when the outer tracks were used General view of the deck: Showing the drawer runner: View of the underside: Hopefully tomorrow I can get some track down... Cheers Bill
treggyman
Hi All A rather belated update..... Though I've forgotten to take any pics of the traverser it now has the track laid & working....i'll try & take some pics tomorrow.... The track is now ballasted....All seems to work but it will need to be properly cleaned & points checked to make sure all works well.....It'l mean a long operating session....Life's can be such a bitch..... Also made a start on the bridge at the Exeter end....Made this one differently to previous bridges. This time I've used hardboard for the bridge front & back & the road deck with 4mm ply for the internal walls all hot glued together after using panel pins to temporarily tack it together.... Hopefully get a bit more done tomorrow Cheers Bill
Jack00
Haha! Life can be so cruel...! Looking really good Bill. Glad to hear all the track is working ok. 6months until August show! Scary stuff won't take long to roll-round. All the best, Jack.

treggyman
Hi All A quick update....Some pics of the traverser.... As you can see it has 8 tracks with space for two more on the outside.....However I probably won't lay them as the top becomes a bit unstable when it is slid so far over...But it works. Made up & fitted the platform sides over the last week.... They are strips of hardboard with slaters brick sheets glued on.... I've built up the thickness at the top with other strips of brick plasticard, sprayed with Grey primer then given various coats of acrylic browns/greys/black followed by a wash of grime..... Hopefully you get the idea....Next will be the platform top when I'll try to get some better pics. Also clad the bridge with stone plasticard....& added the individually cut stones forming the arch. You can see that I make the stones overlong & then trim them back to shape.... The process of sticking them uses so much plastic weld that it softens the plasticard ,so I tend to leave it to reharden overnight before trimming. Well thats all for now.....Progress seems awful slow at the moment....Hopefully make a start on the scenery next....But loads of buildings to make..... Cheers Bill

treggyman
Great work. Hi Thanks for the comment.... It seems to make it more worthwhile when you get positive comments...Thanks again Cheers Bill
treggyman
Hi All A bit more achieved today, but not all went as planned..... First a couple of pictures of the bridge....Now all the stones trimmed & any holes filled with Milliput....Then a coat of grey primer.... First the front.. & because it might be possible to see it,the back.... I filled in the platforms with Knauf foam & then covered the surface with fine grade sandpaper. I intend to edge the platforms with some form of slabs....I haven't decided whether to lay these individually or to try & make a strip.....Watch this space!!!!!! I normally glue the sandpaper down with Copydex...But it didn't seem to spread easily today so I thought I'd try PVA....Not a success as you can see by the timber placed on it to try & get it to stay flat rather than curl up I may yet have to redo the near platform...We'll see how it looks when it's dry... I also used a single coat of Copydex on one surface only as this way you can move what is being stuck around for a while if you don't quite place it correctly....Normally I use it as a contact adhesive & if it's not put on right first time...Tough...You can't move it!!!! Next was to fill in the open plan piece of baseboard at the Barnstaple end.... This was done using my usual method...... A covering of wire mesh stapled to the baseboard.. This then covered with loads of plasterboard joint tape.... This is then coated with all purpose filler ,which when it's starting to set has the lumps & bumps brushed out with an old 2 inch or so wide paint brush & lots of water.... Well that's today's progress. If I get time Ill give the filler a coat of brown or green acrylic paint before the filler has set,so that any chips won't show through white. At least now I've started the scenics I feel I'm making progress Cheers Bill
winterbournecm
Nice to see some 'box Instructions with Geoff Dent's signature on after all these years - must be a long time since the last of those went (an excellent ) gauge modeller by the way too, had to keep on building new layouts as he seemed to be forever moving house. As for your 'mate' Rigor i do wonder if the lady in the car was 'someone other than his wife' as the saying used to go - not an uncommon sort of visitor to the late turn Signalman in some 'boxes. I hope you're referring to Southern boxes mate. No such illicit going on amongst us Cornish Methodists!
treggyman
Hi All just a brief update.... I painted the plaster a dark brown colour on Sunday evening....These pics were taken this evening & you can see that it has not dried out yet....The lighter brown is where it is dry but there are beads of moisture on the dark brown areas..... Lots more to be done in this area but its a start. Also got round to painting the bridge.... Ascan probably be seen each stone is individually painted wit 4 basic colours...dark brown, dark grey,a reddish brown & khaki, with a touch of black mixed in every now & then....Although it isn't so obvious in the photo's I then gave it a wash of muck...brown/black mixed....It looks quite good in the flesh, but in the photo's quite a lot of grey primer is still showing through... It still needs more weathering,so that will be sorted out then. That's all for now Cheers Bill
treggyman
Hi all A bit more progress today... Sorted out a couple of electrical problems...The controller was wired in back to front & two of the isolation sections in the loop were wired for the wrong line....Also sorted out a derailment problem on one of the points....not quite in gauge....only found the problem when running 'wrong line' & the cement hoppers derailed. I then gave another coat of paint to the plastered area Then sprinkled on various shades of scatter on to the wet paint Then added some more cork & covered it with ballast to represent the bare trackbed where the second line had been removed Finally fitted the back board for the backscene & fixed the control panel to it Hopefully get some bits done through the week Cheers Bill Edit was because I must have pressed a wrong button & sent the post before I'd finished it!!!!! treggyman
looking good Hi ess1uk Thanks for the comment.... Progress is slow at present as every time I think I'm going to be able to get on with the project some other important ??? job crops up. However am hoping to have a good bash over Easter Cheers Bill

TomJ
I've really enjoyed following your progress - its good to see things coming together. I especially like the bridge, gives it that North Devon looks straightaway. I hope you don't mind as I am also building a layout inspired by Crediton, this time in N. I hope this is ok as I have found a huge amount of inspiration on this thread, especially the photos people have posted. Like you I was attracted by the greater variety of traffic than in Cornwall and the short loco hauled trains. I might tweak history a little to keep the clay traffic running and have holiday trains to Barnstaple and a service to Okehampton! Look forward to seeing what happens to this over Easter.

Hi Lee & TomJ Thanks for your comments....Always appreciate positive comments....Thanks again. TomJ It's a great feeling to have inspired someone to do any thing, let alone while they're building a layout. Is your layout featured on here? If so, what is it called? & if not why not...... TomJ
Hi Treggyman. Good to hear I'm not treading on your toes! Not yet got a name for the layout but as its a combination of Crediton and Lapford I thought either Crediford Road or Lapton Road. I've not yet started a thread as so far I've only made the buildings. I want to finish my Cornish clay shunting layout (which is in the warm playroom) before venturing to the cold garage! I'll start a thread when there's some progress worth reporting.

treggyman
Hi All A bit of progress today.... Started the scenery at the Exeter end..... I used Knauf pink foam to build up the land.....The beauty of this stuff is that it is easy to cut with a knife or saw & can be sanded to shape as well.... I didn't get as much done as I'd hoped because although I had an idea of what I was trying to achieve I kept changing my mind.... Originally I had planned to have the whole area as fields & had cut & shaped the foam accordingly, when I remembered as model I'd built a while ago of an old farmhouse that we used to live in.... Although Cornish it is very similar (to my mind) to the typical Devon farmhouses..... So I dug it out & placed it in rough position. It will need some work as it has been damaged when removing it from it's previous layout home & has been dropped at least once... I also weathered the bridge a bit & it is now fixed in place. A general view The bridge The farm house.....note damage!!! & with the farmhouse roughly in position Hopefully any spare time in the evenings this coming week will give me the opportunity to repair the farmhouse Cheers Bill
TomJ
Hi Bill My china clay layout 'Lamellion Junction' is on here, but I've not updated the thread for a while. It's inspired by Coombe Junction/Moorswater and the eventual aim is to make it dual era for my steam and BR blue stock (a bit like Ullypugs Wheal Elizabeth'. I ought to take some more photos. I was building a larger clay layout 'St Petrocs' but it hadn't ended up as I wanted and I was more and more interested by the North Devon line so I am going to rebuild it as 'Crediton-ish' and have used the buildings etc for my small clay layout. I do like that bridge now it's been set in the landscape, especially the impression of a double track that's been rationised.

Hi TomJ Thanks for the comment re the bridge....It's something I've always wanted to model....a rationalised but fully functioning railway. I have seen & enjoyed your Lamellion Junction but couldn't place it with your name....I checked your profile but no mention of your work there. Look forward to Crediton-ish Cheers Bill
treggyman
Hi All A bit of progress today. Cut & glued down the pink foam for the rising ground at the Exeter end.... As you can see I've filled the gaps as before with plasterers joint tape... Then gave a coat of plaster to cover it up.... Then a first coat of brown paint..... Well thats all for now Cheers Bill
treggyman
Hi All Had a play at placing the farmhouse.... First an overview... Gives a general idea of what it will be like.Iam thinking of building an old stone barn next to the farmhouse & there will be a rough lane leading past the front of the house to the road. The barn will be roughly where the tractor is & parallel to the railway. From the front.... Gives an idea of what I'm trying to achieve,hopefully....The railway passing through & being seen through & as part of the scenery....Much as seen with Farkham in the current Model Rail. I had always planned this sort of view for the layout as although hopefully it will be possible to see the whole vista,it will also be possible to split the scene up as in real life.....Any way time will tell! Cheers Bill
