A Nod To Brent - a friendly thread, filled with frivolity, cream teas and pasties. Longing for the happy days in the South Hams 1947.

There's no layout photos while I'm redoing the backscene and corner unless you want some of course but I've had chance to line out my Bachmann 45xx and renumber to 4555.Doesn't she look nice and quite realistic in the sun......

Well, the lining is reasonable, I guess, but she really needs some more weathering to take away that shiny, toy like appearance....

I was thinking how nice it would be if the P & D commissioned Bachmann to release 'Warrior' as a special edition.I know the SVR did something with a Manor so its possible.Hornby would need to do 'Hercules' and 'Goliath' though.I'd buy them for the happy holiday memories in the area still to this day.

Yes, I know, I know, but........ I don't think we should do anything more to encourage the Dartmouth Steam Railway in their loco naming policy...  That 45XX looks ridiculous with the 'Warrior' nameplate on the smokebox.

Should have been 'Tinkerbelle'...... :P

Great new backscene!

Nothing better than the good old English Channel.

But he's made a good job of the sea colouring and texture.

Don't I wish.My sea is utter c**p and needs redoing.Desperately.Don't be fooled by Andy Y's photo in MI4.The sea was a lot of photoshop especially to make it shine !

Here's my superdetailed Hornby Large Prairie basking in the sun next to my extended Ratio goods shed.

All lies of course, but have you featured a Large Prairie on a "Nod to Brent" yet, as ten of the class were based at Newton Abbot in 1946?

Or is it a case of there is no point in trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, rather like the Hornby King?

So Pinocchio is alive and well and living in SW Leics then.

Absolutely correct.Another long in the tooth offering from Hornby that was first released by Airfix when I was still at school.I don't have one but had forgot there were a few at  NA late 40s.

I'm not sure that the body on the Airfix/Hornby 61XX is that bad, really?

Alan's made a lovely job of his on 'Wencombe'.

Sure, you can almost certainly add a bit more detail if you wish, or if the Hornby chassis bugs you (as it would me for a P4 model... ;) ), there's always our friends at Comet...

Just curious, what in you opinion is wrong the King I know it's not one of Hornby's better models but would like to know what other modellers think of them with regards to their shortfall.

81C

I think the main problem with the Hornby King is the excessive gap/daylight between the front frames and bogie when viewed at eye level. Barry Ten has addressed this here http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/257/entry-8842-youve-been-framed-improving-the-Hornby-king/.

It seems like a very cost effective visual improvement to me.

Although I don't know the absolute prices, its that which bugs me most about both these models as I don't think they offer value for money.Having said that it has been shown by Westerner and Barry Ten they can be made better.Potential purchases by me will wait as I have four other loco purchases before I add these.

That Royal Mail King edition was originally £140 I think.

Checking the numbers of the ones mainly used for banking at NA shews mainly 51xx series locos used.

Here's mine (large prairie that is) on the early morning parcels.

Just weathered and renumbered.

Nice to see you picked a correct number from those based at Newton Abbot Alan. ;)

Not see one, all mine had Great Western on the tanks I've a couple with roundels, A bit of brake fluid to remove the Great Western and a set of HMRS pressfix will do the trick.

81C

I'd thought as much.A model that's been around since the late 70s that only ever had two Great Western liveries.Poor show.

I sense a very slight weakening in your defences re Large Prairies.

You should have gone for the original Airfix model, which was a "snip" at £9.25, according to the RM review in March '77. I seem to recall it literally featured very solid pony truck wheelsets, as well as the flangeless centre driving wheels mentioned in the previous post. Mine ran in an exceptionally noisy manner - I assume that would have been the gears shredding themselves, and it was soon stored awaiting attention - which it never got.

No idea how the current Hornby offering justifies an RRP of £99.99 though. A good second hand example perhaps as a basis to work on?

Maybe but that price has just justified what I said about vfm.A new tooling Bachmann prairie is £65.I will need a 51xx for banking duties though but the new Stars will take my pennies this year.

Mine is the Hornby one so as seen in the pics flanges on the centre driver and extra pick ups on the rear bogie makes it an excellent runner.Oh I just remembered the only detailing that was done was to take off the moulded dart off the smoke box and repace with a a cast brass one.

As its quiet on here at the moment I've had a few 'friends' around to study my signalling diagram although none of us could make head or tail of it and so we decided to have some appropriate lunch from Mr Aulds corner stores instead.......

This must be the only railway forum in the world where close-up of pastys are a regular occurence. I like the superdetail on this one, you can see the fork marks and that first tasty bite.

My mother always told me not to write in books, but I suppose when you are famous enough you can get away with anything...
