Glorious NSE
Fancy a bit of clag? Couple of pics from the Thames Valley in the early 90s... This one seems to have followed me West to Devon (via a year in Spain!) - it's now on the South Devon Railway backdated to D6737...37037 passing Slough with the immense load of three empty Salmon... Not sure this one was entirely well....37891 at West Ealing, it'd just got the feather for Greenford...this one hasn't survived to the present day... 7
long island jack
Now and then there are DRS trains of Workington docks to Drigg,in the period 2008-10 when they were building some new repository at Drigg, all materials were loaded on Workington dock and shipped in by train, these could end up with any type of power from 20's 37's or 66 in any formation, always top and tailed. here's a few photo's of some of the trains. 510 on the morning loaded to Drigg, the train has to run to Maryport to get access to the up line to Drigg,it's quite a load for a single tractor,15 loaded(stone) and a mega-fret +2 tractors. 218-609 at the other end of the train, these will work the train from Maryport. 602-66416 with the afternoon returning empties at Harrington. 218-20309 with a mega-fret of re-bars bound for Drigg via Maryport 609-218 same train different day at Flimby 218-609 with re-bars and concrete pipe 688-087 with 2 loaded (sand) on Workington docks Beauty of these trains, you could/can photography them coming back from Marport, with the back loco's on the front, when the empties come back in the late afternoon they reverse onto the docks. Don't all rush to Workington to photo them, these haven't run for 18 months or so. Ray
ZiderHead
... the train has to run to Maryport to get access to the up line to Drigg ... ... 218-20309 with a mega-fret of re-bars bound for Drigg via Maryport Interesting working. Is there nowhere to run around to avoid propelling? It seems like a lot of traction for not much wagon. It looks like Chopper and the Tractor are both working there, are they all worked with 2 drivers?

Rivercider
I have added a few more of my old 1980s photos to Flickr, South Wales was a stronghold for class 37s back then. As I recall there were 6 pairs of Cantons 37s allocated outbased at Barry to work MGR trains to Aberthaw. The coal came from various South Wales locations, collieries and loading points. From the Cardiff Valleys I can remember Penallta, Lady Windsor, the Ocean Complex (and Cwm Bargoed I think). From further afield Blaenant and Steel Supply at Jersey Marine. The wagons were formed in 28 wagon sets and the 37s worked them to Aberthaw Reception siding, from there a couple of Cantons Slow Speed Fitted (SSF) class 47s were employed to work the sets around the power station loop., At Barry Town DMU set C454 is bound for Cardiff as 37302 and 37288 pass by with a loaded set for Aberthaw, 17/9/81 Radyr Yard also had Canton class 37s outbased for local trip working, about 6 or 7 of them in the early 1980s, a lot of the work was hauling coal, including inter colliery and to supply the Phurnacite plant at Abercwmboi, At Morganstown 37285 is heading South on the Down Goods line with a trip from Nantgarw Coke Works to Radyr Yard with a train load of coke for export through Barry Docks. The Up Goods line already appears to be disused. Castell Coch stands on the hillside opposite, 11/8/82 cheers

South of 1E
A "South Wales steamer" in 37187 steaming gently at Cranmore with the "Mendip Artificer" tour from St Pancras. 37189 was tailing, 45121 did most of the tour plus a short burst from 08849 to part of the Highworth branch on 210184. the "steamers" were classic overnight passenger machines in South Wales in the late 70's. 37114
I had to do a double take on this, are the cab noses different on this loco, one flush and one split box, looking at the back of it in the blue livery, it looks like it is to me but could be wrong, It would make a interesting model if it is. SGJ Quite a few like this due to accident damage albeit each with their own subtle differences. From memory they were 006/19/65/75/100/102 which had marker lights at one end and boxes at the other. 006,19, 65 and 100 retained the nose doors but lost the boxes. 102 had a friday afternoon look about it with strange tail lights, cut back bufferbeam cowling (as did 19) and no doors. When converted to 712 they sorted most of the bits, but left the obscure tail light mountings. Also with odd ends was 37072 which had a centre box and roof mounted horns at one end only. In addition 073/74/091 were rebuilt after smashes with centre boxes in the 60's and to the untrained eye are identical to a standard centre box series 2 machine. Laira also struggled with any 37 that wasn't centre box so rebuilt 031/047/053 into centre boxes but with nose moutned horns.

Cheers Rob really interesting info there which gives to the question of when is a 37 not a 37 ? A: when they`ve had a right (bertie bassett) Dolly mixture of repair makeovers. Also gives rise to if they were a brand new loco and these refurbs happened, folk these days would swear you had photo-shopped the pictures. Nothing is ever bog standard or prototypical as if you can think of it, it has probably be done to keep a loco and a job done.

The Border Reiver
Here is a photo of D6862 (37162) under construction at Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns works at Darlington on Sunday 21st July 1963; at least I think it's that loco. The batch number is M45 4 and going by the build dates that loco, which is nearly complete, entered traffic on 23rd July. Using this logic, the two locos in the background are therefore L-R D6866 (37166, 37891) and D6865 (37165)
