Few screen shots from the film Breaking Point that was on Talking pics TV the other week. Apart from the MGA and a Triumph, I don't know any of the other makes...although I think the police car maybe a Humber. Very worried in the scene in London at night that no one appears to have their headlights on...and the Triumph doing an illegal U turn on the A23.

Incidentally, the Escort Estate is a genuine Ford-built example with provenance.

Was it one of the rare Mexico estates? (can't quite make out the badge with my eyesight now - even on the enlarged pic!) I seem to recall Boreham did a few RS2000's too (or were rumoured to have done!)

Lovely car!

I believe it was the Wolseley  6/90 that had a suspension torsion bar that had to be removed if you were dropping the gear box to change the clutch.

Being under very high tension made it dangerous to remove if you didn't know how to go about it and almost impossible without the right tools to bolt it back up  again.

Wonderful car all the same and an old lady in Beaconsfield gave me her late husbands 'pride and joy', a Wolseley 6/90, that stood under wraps in her garage and a truly immaculate example in black with very low mileage  of which I sold to my Uncle Jim who wrote it off the next day !

Why would they have headlights on in a built-up area with streetlights? Side lights only. (The police car is a Wolseley 6/90).

The pictures seem to have come out all squashed up.

Indeed! As a one-time London bus driver in the early 1970's......most of the night driving was done on sidelights. The RT deckers I drove only had one headlight lit on dip beam ( the nearside one) and generally this would only be used in foul weather, or out towards Bromley.

I don't know when ordinary drivers began to stop 'looking' at night? Nowadays they need to be 'told' something's there, instead of simply spotting it!

Probably because traffic generally moves at a much faster pace and theres a lot more of it.

WHilst I agree that's what has occurred over the years, there has been a seed-change in the past.

I wouldn't like to comment on traffic quantities...London back then could get pretty hectic.

Perhaps it all changed when people started to expect ''things done for them?'' Rather than feeling they ''have to do it themselves?''

We have now reached the stage where our car lights come on regardless of what we do....so now, folk thinks it is the 'norm?'

70 years ago, most cars would have ground to a halt with flat batteries if lights-on had been the rule.!! :)

It also shows as 1601cc on DVLA ,so a double yes .

Another incorrect DVLA record then! I always believed the (non bored out) engines in my Mex's were 1598cc. The Factory Original Sporting Escorts book has it as 1599cc. It's important as being under lets 'standard' Mexico's run in up to 1600cc classes in rallies etc.1601 would put them in with RS1800's & 2000's etc..!

I was in the Thorneycroft museum Tuesday I'd managed to leave the camera at home, too much SWMBO in the ears that day and the bl00dy phone had a flat battery I was surprised to see Thorneycroft

cars that's one vehicle maker I thought I knew everything about.

I must do some homework before visiting these places. :gamer:

I trust the RS2 estates were mk1? As if there were nose cone mk2s they would need a bespoke nose and wings.

Would be a good rival to the firenza sports hatch though

Yup, supposedly Mk1's - I can't say I ever actually saw one though....

The Mk2 RS2 had a bespoke nose, wings & bonnet as I understand it, so if they could graft it onto the saloon body, would it be any more difficult to do an estate? I agree it would have been great to see one to rival the Vauxhall droop snoot...!! I'm sure I've seen a 'home made' Mk2 RS2 van somewhere, so an estate should be possible?

Meanwhile, these have arrived....

attachicon.gifimage.jpeg

....and will be tested in the CX at the weekend....

Do you really need 5 times more tail light? I would have thought that the output would be very close to fog lamp intensity, and therefore very dangerous at night and in rain...

All this modern stuff to make lights as bright as a nuclear explosion is making driving at night just more and more dangerous, and tiring...

If you'd seen the output of the standard filament bulbs in my CX, I think you'd be moaning that you're struggling to see any light at all...
