The sound of engines much bigger than mine but not visible in the rear view mirror is some what frighting . I think the only way get a photo will be with the Traveller on an overbridge. Best of luck. RMweb Premium MJI Posted May 8, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 8, 2018 She is indeed! One of my neighbours has one very similar. A quickie from the kit car do at Stoneleigh this afternoon, one of eight GT40 replicas lined up outside... DSCF3036.jpg I had a decent chat with the owner of one of them who very kindly let me try his car on for size - it was very, very comfortable with a definite sense of power and solidity to it. The cockpit details were spot on.... it didn't feel anything like your average kit car and I was itching to drive it! I'm more than slightly miffed at myself for not photographing the one specific car I wanted to grab some shots of, save for a hasty shot of its dark interior, namely the Mirage company's rather lovely Ferrari 250SWB copy, just about the best replica of anything from Maranello I've yet laid eyes on. The lines, the 'weight', proportions and details were spot on to my (admittedly biased) eyes, magazine photographs don't do it justice at all. The company make a point of not fitting any prancing horse badges on, but it really doesn't need any anyway, one look tells you what it is, even the deep dished Borrani wire wheels are the real thing. Got any more from Stoneleigh? If you can find some of the off road buggies I can give some more information

Paperlad
Did someone mention V8's? After eight years of working abroad and now that I'm back home, I decided to treat myself to a new toy...a TVR Chimaera 400. It is 19 yrs old so I guess it counts as an 'old car'. I'm still getting used to it and, if I'm honest, the performance still scares me a bit (no driver aids!) but the noise it makes is outstanding.

Paperlad
^^ It's got Citroën CX door mirrors. That'll be why the off side one don't work proper Joking aside, most of the switches, ancillaries, running gear etc., are off the shelf bits from Ford, Vauxhall and Rover. I'm still getting used to it and, if I'm honest, the performance still scares me a bit (no driver aids!) but the noise it makes is outstanding. Good friend of mine had one of those. Last time I saw him a few years back before he moved to Scotland, was when he pulled into the tyre fitters where I was having the Focus reshod. Noticed he'd left the headlights on when he stopped outside. Mentioned it to him & he replied 'Yeh I know, went to turn them off & the switch disappeared behind the dash....!!' keefr2
So, slightly OT, but not too much, I'd like to get a photo of my Traveller next to an HST preferably stationary. Where best to do it? Obviously needs to be a publicly accessible place, not a depot or some other railway premises, as I'm not a railway employee. Any suggestions? I'm in Bristol. I don't know how good the result would be, and you'd definitely need a fast shutter speed, but if you fancied a trip to South Wales there is a secondary road up to the entrance of Margam Knuckle yard. There's a 5 bar type metal gate alongside the mainline that the HST's pass by very close. I think there'd be enough room to manoeuvre the car sideways against the gate.... This is the Google maps reference for said gate - 51.554606, -3.749872 Keith

RMweb Gold rodent279 Posted May 10, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 10, 2018 Bristol Parkway? I admit it's a long time since I've been there... steve Possible, but not east-I'd have to be in the car park, which means paying, and there'd have to be a free space on the row beside the tracks, in the right position. The tracks next to the car park are not regularly used by HST's anyway.

I'd rather have a stationary train next to it though, easier to get a good shot. Thanks.
Rugd1022
I couldn't resist posting this little gem of a photograph, taken just over fifty years ago by Don Freeley at Silverstone on 27th April 1968 during preparation for the International Trophy race... what a contrast between the Mk1 GT40 (chassis no. P1017) and the wee Mk1 Austin Mini alongside it, not to mention the Frogeye Sprite...

Southern Steve
Talking of old TVR's, who says the wiring is always a mess? An old Mk 1 Vixen we're rewiring atm. Jenny Emily
Who needs to jump out of aeroplanes to get an adrenaline buzz when you have an old car and a garage that forgot to tighten the all important nut that holds the hub to the driveshaft? I found out the hard way just how much the Haynes manual isn't kidding about how tight that nut is supposed to be. At a steady 60mph last night I became aware of a metallic scraping noise getting very loud and angry very quickly. I dived for the hard shoulder and discovered a front left wheel that wasn't very happy. The AA recovered me and took a long hard look at the offending wheel and hub behind. The damage is quite substantial given how quickly it failed once the nut started unscrewing itself at speed. On jacking the car up the wheel was free to flop in all directions with an inch or more of play in any direction. The brake disc was badly scored and it was clear that it was the callipers that had held the wheel via the disc from coming any further off the driveshaft. In the process the wheel bearing has also shredded itself, presumably at the point that the wheel drifted out of position. I was informed that it was as well I pulled over immediately and the car has been relocated, courtesy of the AA, to my drive. Three days ago I had a new ABS ring fitted on that drive shaft. The AA mechanic could turn the nut by hand that is supposed to be well torqued on, and it was his opinion that the garage had failed to torque that nut properly causing the failure as it came loose. He has given me a copy of his report so I can go back to the garage with it to demand that they put right the car fixing the damage they have caused. So, not the greatest of commutes back from work. A 20 minute trip took 4.5 hours and rendered the car a little sorry for itself. It also shows just how valuable recovery membership is. Without it, who knows how expensive getting removed from the motorway would have been. First time I've had cause to call them in over a decade.
