As I was walking along to the garage to collect my MOT failure Pug 407SW (broken rear coil spring) a Daimler Double-Six Coupe wafted silently past. Looked in great condition but pity about the turd brown colour.

Looks to be a Northern Ireland plate which wasn’t common on the mainland back then

all the best

Yes that’s the style of a NI plate (like my lotus from a few posts back) but the Austin 1300 has a British type plate so more likely to be mainland. What about the mineral wagon, was that design used in NI?

It looks like a BR 16 ton mineral wagon and it appears to be loaded with coal. The locomotive looks like an austerity 0-6-0ST. Going by the vehicles and the Renault having reflective number plates it is probably post 1970.

Renault 6 ?

Surley it's a racing Renault if it's FIA registered!

On a serious note I wonder if it's somewhere in the Fife area, the Austin is FFG. FG being the area code for Fife at the time.

FIA is an old County Antrim regisration. The first letter denotes the year, the other two are the area.

For example, Coleraine (where I live) was *IW, then changed to *NZ (my car is YNZ) and has just changed to AYZ.

The photo must be from England as the 16 ton BR mineral wagons weren't used over here.

The location is Oakley, although which one I  don't know, there must be several around the UK. Date wise the reflective white and yellow number plates were first advertised in the UK in '68, although it took a long while for dealers and suppliers to start fitting them to new cars, with plenty of them still fitting silver / white on black plates in '72 / '73.

Trial fitting of the Riley Elf / Wolseley Hornet waist line trim (using double sided Scotch tape!), it looks good from a few feet away but still needs rechroming. It's starting to look less like a '90s Rover Mini and more like something you'd see in the car park at Abbey Road Studio c.1970... ;)

Would you be happy with this?

Been to work and done a bit of shopping and seen a couple of classics, an A35 closely followed by a MGB. Both seemed to be in good condition and the roof down on the MG. Later in the day I saw a 2CV and a Mk 2 golf but neither of them appeared to be in good condition. Nothing else to report.

Thanks for info. The chap I take it to is usually very thorough  and I’ve got to know him quite well. I’m wary of the chassis as it is quite old so it does get a good look at. Its not had too much work done on it since I bought it. There are lots of little blemishes in the paint work but not bad enough to do a respray on. There’s no issues with ‘crazing’ . It’s one of the first +2 and some of the parts are not as easy to source as later versions. When I bought it some parts were missing and I didn’t realise until I got it home. And of course they were the hard to get type.

The plastic section over the drive tunnel is cracked and I’d like to replace it but it’s not available as is was only fitted to the first series. When I bought the car it had the wrong brake servo and in took ages to find a correct one. I believe it was only fitted to the lotus and  BMC landcrab.

Brake servo was, I think, also fitted to some models of Mk1 Ford Escort. Not cheap but I do know where to get refurbished servos and also overhaul kits.

Thanks, when I got it it was refurbished before being fitted. I don’t know how long it will last so would be grateful for further information.

If I'm not mistaken it is a Girling Mk2A servo. The guy I know (Trevor) runs Stage 1 Motorsport in Cornwall. He does Escort RS and Lotus Cortina parts and is definitely worth talking to. He gets an awful lot of parts remanufactured as well.

Also bear in mind a guy called Richard Lee, he trades as Richard Lee Classic Spares and is in Southwell, near Nottingham. He gets all sorts of parts and also deals in Weber Carburettors.

How about losing the reversing lights and rear fog and go for concealed ones that classic specialists sell

Rear wipers were also popular on late 60s early 70s modded  minis
