Dave Jones leaving Dapol in August

Perhaps the mouth of the Ixion horse may be permitted to opine.  The N gauge GWR Manor was a very successful model that sold out in its first four liveries and I still enjoy a frission of excitement when I see one running on layouts at exhibitions or appearing in photographs in magazines. We gave up N gauge partly because because of the arms race between the two principal manufacturers of British N, but  as we developed the 0n30 Coffee Pot steam rail-motor, which has also sold out, we realised our real interests lay in the larger scale.

Hi Chris,

What I meant was your original version of the Manor, which was produced to the wrong scale.  The revised version of your Manor is a great model, and I have one as it happens.

I was really looking forward to the N Gauge GWR Churchward Mogul that you announced several years back - I would have bought several.  I was very disappointed when you said you were no longer doing British outline N gauge stock.

Post#154 shows a link to Djmodels, but it is locked down without a password. Any news when Dave is going to announce his venture? I only use this site, MRemag and MR forum and would not know which other site to look for the link, be nice when it is in the public domain so that we can all enjoy this new venture.

...I'm honestly amazed that even after that triumph, other companies still haven't started to engage the community in the same way...

Well, here you also see the risk in that strategy. It is not just your business that is being promoted, but the person representing the public face of the company. As always in business, where there is a risk there is equally opportunity: some businesses may consider that the benefit outweighs the risk; others with a different business model may decide they are better served by not taking that risk.

We'll be getting models of DapolDave? ;)

Luke

No, but we might be seeing resin models of John Peel, Kenny Everett, Chris Evans, Charlie Gillet, Alan Freeman and others, all done Japanese anime style...

Give it a few years and 3D print and scanning will be good enough that releasing things like a OO scale exDapol Dave will be easy enough. I bet a lot of people will be featuring on their own layouts as soon as that occurs!

Now there's a thought!

Good point EP, do you think that the future could lie in just producing motorised chassis?

There was a picture I posted taken from his website showing what a good photographer he is but unfortunately its been removed for some reason!   :scratchhead:  I guess it must be copyrighted or something.

I would be very happy at the prospect of a vendor offering RTR chassis alone for purchaser's choice of 3D printed bodywork, but have the feeling that there is nowhere near the potential for enough sales to sustain a business.

Like it or not, the majority of the model railway market is looking for complete RTR product: unbox it, put it on the rails, it runs. And to be honest, when it is good RTR product, I am very happy to do just that. My own scratch and kit building and RTR hacking and bashing is now a minority sport compared to twenty years ago; all thanks to a slew of decent RTR at last having become available in OO. The extra choice in bits and pieces for a basher is happy side effect.

What is of interest to me is just what subject and gauge choices are made in the new venture. Here's an experienced industry insider who will naturally enough be making choices that he believes are going to sell well and quickly win a good reputation. You couldn't ask for a better indication of what is 'hot' at present, or might be in the near future.

It is clear that superbly detailed, reliable high quality models can be made in N gauge - just look at CJM. But these are at a price far higher than most modellers seem willing to pay. I wonder if Dave is looking at a gap in the market somewhere between the Chinese mass production and the bespoke models of the specialist.

If anyone knows what the market is like and how much people will pay gs detail then it's Dave Jones I'd have thought.

It works for coaches and wagons minus some axle length problems. I've done some experiments with partly 3D printed motorised chassis for my 'Flying Matchbox' but I'm really not happy with it - too much friction. For diesels N is really short the equivalent of the various motor bogies available in OO. That is perhaps the more pressing need.

However it should probably be designed by someone who knows what they are doing !

In the meantime EP for best results I guess N still has to be cast in resin or mould injection then!
