RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted January 13, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 13, 2015 One day long into the future someone will come across those 6 holes and wonder what the heck they were for. Indeed! I really must leave some misleading clues when I move out As my house used to be a shop, perhaps I should hint that it was a Knockwurst storage rack by leaving some sausage skins down there! RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted January 13, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 13, 2015 So as well as reading a new book I have been getting on with baseboard construction. 9mm ply tops to be added. The narrow bit bottom right is a mini fiddle yard but it won't fit until I raise the boards up to the height of the tunnels
Adams442T
Anyone struggling to find the Iain Rice 'Layout Design' book at a sensible price (i.e. less than £182.00!!) may be interested to know that he has a new book coming out in April, 'Compact Layout Design (Layout Design and Planning) and it should be priced at about £12.00. That's more like it - not least 'cos it leaves £170.00 over to build it!

28XX
Indeed! I really must leave some misleading clues when I move out As my house used to be a shop, perhaps I should hint that it was a Knockwurst storage rack by leaving some sausage skins down there! And possibly a copy-print of the Fallen Madonna With The Big B00bies by VanClumpf
Barnaby
I too followed the trail made by the intrepid "roads of iron" explorer Colin Penfold and went to the Amazon and succumbed to the charms of the Rice papyrus layoutus compacto. A tome has been put aside to be placed in a secure crate for special delivery.

dseagull
Just a potential word of warning regarding the new book from Iain; http://www.kalmbachstore.com/12487.html Being published by Kalmbach, I suspect it will be US-based/US prototypes. Barnaby
Thanks hadn't spotted that dseagull but while my present interest is not USA some of his drawing and tips will still be of use to me. Regards
RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted January 17, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 17, 2015 The advice on planning and presentation will be generic and valuable. For £11 I'm happy. Thanks for the warning though
dseagull
Absolutley - at that price I think I may indulge myself. I love the Haynes book, as well as Iain's earlier works (Still after a copy of his Light Railway designs book, and the forthcoming updated version of the Wills Kits book is very much on my wishlist too!) RMweb Gold Mikkel Posted January 20, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 20, 2015 Hi Colin, I know you've done some exploration of the old DN&S track bed yourself, but I came across this Flickr album today and thought it might be of interest: https://www.flickr.com/photos/clive_richardson/sets/72157633264195690

Very interesting pics of Whitchurch Town in particular. I presume the owner is an enthusiast to allow all those folks to wander all over his/her property! I did take quite a few shots of what was left in the 1980s, perhaps I should post them up here

RMweb Gold colin penfold Posted February 14, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 14, 2015 (edited) So, a bit more planning alongside building baseboards (all 3 done for Southampton, 2 out of 3 done for Burghclere) 2mm steel sections ordered to make up the spiral - I have threaded rods and nuts/bolts in stock to create the levels and the steel will be pre-drilled Bespoke Marcway pointwork ordered for Burghclere. I took a trip to Sheffield last week and was impressed with Marc and his products. I decided that as Burghclere is the pure prototype bit of the layout (along with the Viaduct section) that this would be code 75 bullhead rail but I know my limits so I won't be building points. Expensive exercise but I will let you lot be the judges as to whether it is worthwhile when it gets delivered. I will go with SMP plain track rather than C&L due to the sleeper spacing being a match to the pointwork. The track will revert to code 100 peco on the hidden sections. This is the brief I gave Marc for the section he is making. Pale green is plain track which isn't part of the brief Finally for this update, I have done the wiring diagram for Southampton, as that's the first area that will get laid As usual, happy for any feedback or questions One question from me: Should I do cosmetic chairs on the Marcway points, and if so, whose????
