The above 47202 pic is running on the wrong line too!!!

Quite right. My guess would be that the main lines were under occupation and the train is heading bang road to Didcot East where it will exit the possession.

If you look closely, could that be a tail light sitting on the right hand buffer? If so perhaps 47202 is trailing and there's another loco out of sight on the front.

Edit - not sure I can see a driver either.

Preston was always a good place for Class 47's with loco changes on the Blackpool, Manchester, Liverpool services as well as "The European"

Although I wouldn't describe it as common, it was not all that rare either. When I was somewhat younger, I used to spend the summer holidays with Grandparents who had a house right by the Fife line as it diverged from the Glasgow line- the angle of the house meant that you couldn't see the DBSO normally, so these "unusual" workings with the set reversed were noteworthy. I would say once or twice per month was not unheard of (likely once a set was reversed it would stay reversed?) But each holiday would have seen such a working at least once.

Two views of "Haymarket"

1st View 47711 powers into Haymarket Station c.1986 looking at the photo brought back a smell to mind of Fuel.

Haymarket always seemed to "reek" of fuel..... looking at the track I see why....

Just looking the 47 looks to be on the wrong end for a push pull as they used to pull out of Glasgow up the bank.. strange...
