Class 47 photos

Recommended Posts

Yes, maybe you are right. I am a little early with my guess in that case.

Perhaps 1990? It couldn't be much later as the units were withdrawn to have their doors fixed.

The unit looks like it could be a pair of 153 units (Hard to tell from my phone) which were converted from Class 155s. Dutch 37s first appeared August 1990 with 37196 being one of the first to be painted. Edited by B Exam

Help! I have no recollection of taking this photo - can anyone recognise the location, with tank wagons parked in a bay platform, and why would a 47 be hauling such a short train?

Could it be Portsmouth Harbour?

And if it's a short train it could possibly be a Cardiff to Portsmouth working.

Hi - I scanned these for Dave (Waverley West) as he is interested in the signal in the background, thought I would share them with the rest of you.  They were all taken on the same afternoon in June 1987 from the stump of the embankment that once carried the Caledonian Leith branch over the E&G main line.  Sadly this vantage point is no longer available as the embankment was cut back to accomodate teh Edinbugh trams.

I cant help with the location i'm sorry to say, but I do wonder whether the "bay platform" is actually a through road between platform lines, or even on the adjoining platform road. If I'm right it might narrow down the possibilities.

I can also see some third rail there so definitely BR(S)

I have just looked again and seen some tall buildings in the background - how about East Croydon, which could make it the Glasgow - Brighton service

Not East croydon that has been suggested, wrong canopy, stock etc........I think the Portsmouth Hbr suggestions are correct. oil tanks would be in the siding for the Sealink ferries to the IOW.

I agree, looking at the photo the platform curves sharply hiding the rest of the train. Look at the canopy curving.

Thanks to everyone for identifying my shot at Portsmouth Harbour. The prize is... a couple more old shots of 47s.

This is 47 790, I believe, on 23 July 1998, at Cattybrook, heading west, down towards the Severn Tunnel.

Sorry this one's not very good quality, but it was at Harlington (Beds), and the headboard says "The Orcadian". Any ideas what this was? The loco and coaches almost match.

This one just reminds me of the hours spent on New Street in the 1980s.

The Orcadian' was the name of the boat train service which ran between Inverness and Wick and connected with the Orkney & Shetland Steamship Company ferry services to Stromness in the Orkney Islands. It was Britain most northernally named train .
