....... if they are made clever enough they will be able to automatically avoid each other and other things.

There is already work going on that includes detection avoidance of other drones and obstacles.

are flying autonomously to a set of instructions.

Doing some extreme manoeuvres and some clever tricks

Most of these actions are autonomous, with the machine adapting its programmed knowledge and learning as it goes.

The military are very interested in the swarm capability of armed nanocopters, that could invade any space, inside or out and hunt down or reach "targets" with devastating effect.

Just like an attack by a swarm of wasps, it would be very difficult to fend them off.

Current use of present day small drones includes

used by the British Army.

These are only simple remote controlled devices, but the more advanced technology is not far away.

So what happens about returns - will Amazon send an empty drone for you to load with your faulty/unwanted goods?

And how might a delivery reach the guy living on a middle floor of a tower block?

From an air traffic control point of view, it's unworkable.  Just as flying cars would be.

Yeh !

Where's my Flying car?

We were promised over 50 years ago (the late 1950's & early 60s) that we'd all have Flying Cars by the year 2000.

Did Hornby get the contract?

Lockheed special projects division got the development contract, and it converged fortuitously with some of their other work. It was quickly realised that ubiquitous flying cars would generate phenomenal radar clutter in densely populated areas, so they prototyped it as a stealth vehicle which proved immensely successful. Unfortunately the test driver of the prototype suffered a black out and complete amnesia, immediately after parking and leaving the vehicle 'somewhere' away from the development centre. Just as soon as they have found it, the program can resume.

So in actual fact, the drone is only required to set off from the depot, with a set of cards! Nothing else is required, thus making the project much simpler/cheaper. The cards could of course be replaced with an electronic version, if that is easier/cheaper still.

I have this idea for a film.

Amazon's board go ahead with Drone delivery despite significant opposition.

Their insistence on doing it this way is justified, an enormous advance, the oppostion cannot compete.

But then of course in time competitors become effective too with their own novel techniques, and its harder going

The Amazon board nevertheless persist, believing in their way.

Then a competitor gets a Trojan into the Amazon drone software, and all the drones shut down simultaneously

Amazon's board get the biggest chewing out ever from the CEO.

Working title: Dronefall.

Well could be true. After all we all believe that a sleigh pulled by reindeer can arrive with parcels once a year....don't we? Awww, come-on, get in the spirit guys.

Just wondering if we need to put a carrot out for the Amazon drone.
