Right, here we go.

Since I haven't had access to the computer, it has resulted in quite a bit of modelling.

I'll start with the scenic updates.

Trees have been progressing. Some are now planted on the layout, however I feel more work is needed in this area. The ones I have placed at the back will hopefully blend in a little more once I have added a back scene (more on this another time). I painted the trunks brown which I think has worked quite well in the context of the layout.

The other tree, which is constructed from wire and horsehair, I feel might need to be darkened as it's a little too close to the colour of the grass and therefore does not seem to obvious when looking at the whole layout.

I've also gone over the scatter field (as I'm now calling it) with a layer of static grass. Another layer if needed as too much of the base layer of paint is visible but it's all going in the right direction

I had some fun with photographing the hedges at the back of the layout. Made of a mixture of horsehair, lichen and woodland scenic, they show the need for a back scene a little but I was quite pleased with these two shots

A new field has also started, this is still very much a work in progress.

The other thing I've been doing is trying my hand at some light weathering. This is not something I've done before but following an article in MRJ (what have I become?!?... :O) I had a go at the simplest method suggested. For wagons, I just used a simple wash of very watery brown acrylic.

And then after it's been given a brush with a clean brush and left to dry

I was quite pleased with how this one turned out

With the locos and carriages, I took more time. The coaches were given quite a going over and I think the results will do for now but I'll probably have another go later.

The locos again were done with more care.

This is what I did to all three of my locos demonstrated on the tender of a Bachmann N.

First of all just a think layer of brown acrylic

Then a layer of water

Then all wiped with tissue or paper towel

And left to dry, the finish being only a mild brown tint which is what I was aiming for. Just something to make them look a little more used.

With locos, this is something that needs to take time for a good result. As my first go at this, I was quite pleased.

I've since gone over about half my wagons and am looking forward to doing the rest.

The trees and scenery look really effective - as you've shown talent there previously this is no surprise. The weathering is headed in the right direction, but one thing I know from my past life is that if dirt is going to stay anywhere on a coach side, it will be in the corners of the window frames, where a carriage-washing-machine flail cannot get to it properly. Typically it is dark matter that just sits there.

Cheers Ian, I'm going to have another go at the coaches at some point anyway as I wasn't as pleased with them so I'll have a go with what you suggest :)

Whilst I wait for some materials to arrive in the post, I've been starting on two new trees. These are the basic shells with obviously a long way to go till they start looking 'real'...

Also, the other part of the loco roster, my H class. I purchased this as a ready built kit. However, I felt there was still work to do on it. I have added coal, toned down the green a little and added some (very) mild weathering. There is still stuff to do to this, such as adding a crew, patching up the chimney, and some internal work.

 

Here it is operating on the Model Railway Club's (of which I am a part time member) test tracks at Keen House.

Hey gang

 

So I've been continuing work on the trees for the moment as I'm still waiting on my new static grass bags but that's fine.

I'm currently experimenting with using DAS clay to form the bark on the trees. I think it looks alright. Once it has dried better, I will paint them a more appropriate colour and also try carving some tree like shapes into them.

These are the two I've been working on at the moment. The smaller one will be a low relief tree hence it's slightly flat look...

I also I had a tidy up of the layout as it's sort of become a dumping ground for materials, tools and other bits of random crap that we modellers seem to bury ourselves in...

Evening all

 

Just small update on the trees. I've given them a coat of suitable tree colour (a mixture of green, brown and white to create a very pleasant shade of s***...). Since taking the photos, another layer has been given. Still much to do...

Afternoon guys

 

The electrics have started! And by this, I mean I have a very rough diagram (with help from some fellow club members) and the startings of some holes in in the baseboards ready to receive wires.

Hi guys

I received a package this morning which means work can continue on the fields when I have enough time to get round to it (hopefully in the next few days). I'm going to use a method described by Gordon Gravatt in his book 'Modelling Grassland' (well worth a buy by the way) for applying static grass onto other static grass. I involves soaking what's already there in 50/50 PVA and water with a drop of washing up liquid and then adding the new stuff on top of that.

 

Anyway, here's the potentially suspicious items that fell out of said package...

Afternoon everyone

 

So, I've had a go at adding another layer to the field and am relatively pleased with the results. However, I think it still needs touching up in places. And also some form of wildlife to make it a little more interesting.

 

This photo is a little odd as it is a slightly darker shade of green in person but it shows how most of the gaps are now covered...

Afternoon all

 

No progress to report due to other commitments this week. However, I have taken a couple of shots of some of the scenic areas in their current state. I find taking photographs helps to show me what still needs doing and what needs improving as there are some things that simply don't show when just looking at the thing in person.

More work is required on the trees. This will be easier once I invest some time into doing a proper back scene (this is still being thought out...)

Ask away Simon :) it was a mixture of the stock i owned and what more one can get away with running. I also love southern locos and this was when they were probably at the zenith.

Of course, there's also the fact that I was born in 1994 so everything has to be researched rather than modelling from memory or personal experience. This is another aspect of the hobby I enjoy, searching through the web, through the library and picking at the older and wiser modeller's brains for new information. For example, I recently found a tiny little book on the Hawkhurst branch that included an image of a Sentinel-Cammell railcar being used in place of the usual push pull service. This operated for all of a month but what an excuse....

No modelling updates due to having an unusually busy week. Instead I've just taken some general photos of the scenic section of the layout for purely narcissistic purposes...

Also, using keyboard stands to hold the whole thing means that every now and then the portability of the layout is put to the test when said stands are being put to their actual gig worthy use...

Finally, on a totally unrelated note, They've let London Road (Brighton) go a bit...

You can't really see in the above photo but it gets worse just beyond the end of the platform on the Brighton bound side.

 

Not only secondary forgotten lines that end up totally overgrown...

With the layout back up, I can begin to carry on with some work to it.

I will hopefully have more time this week (except with a gig on Thursday, I should really focus on getting ready for that...)

At Hawkhurst, there was a small set of industrial buildings so I might try to have a go a recreating something similar. Any suggestions would be welcome :)

Its band number 3 for me, it's the backing band for a singer called Will Mussett. I play keys and have done for the last ten or so years. It's my other hobby and probably takes up just as much time and money as railways. Love it :)

oooooooooooh an actual update.

 

I did some scenic work today which was unexpected but you know how it is. Sitting in my room listening to Dark Side of The Moon and the layout was just there...

 

I've been beefing up the grass on the third field, with more layers of static and some other little bits of scatter I had lying around. I'm quite pleased with the result...

Second on the quick to emerge list of things that got done was the hedges between the field. This is where the two baseboards meet. I've tried to cover the gap up a bit more (we can say there's a small stream in there ;) )

Also the edging along the top of the embankment was given a going over with some lichen covered in scatter

Finally the bushes around the whole thing were completed with a mixture of horsehair, lichen and some bits I had left over from my previous layouts

Finally, I had a quick flick through one of my books to discover that the industrial buildings I mentioned in a previous post were those belonging to the Kent Woodware company.
