I hope you have a stronger resolution than me Michael, now you're at this stage I'd just want to play trains!!

Coming on well.

Mike.

The last two club nights thats all ive done, where as id normally get stuck in to some task such as wiring. But its all testing of course. Runs everywhere now, can even propel rakes of wagons with 3 link couplings around the curves into the goods yard. Im glad Chris advised to go for the longer curves now.

Some shots of what I have been up to. Its all to do with the packing away of the layout for shows.

Same as the scenic boards which has been copied from a couple of other layouts I have seen as shows. The layout becomes a bread tray like set up. With the boards sliding underneath each other. Then the whole set up is lifted on to 2 trolley skates.

Also three of the boards will have folding top lids on which will store the rolling stock in. The lids will have foam on the underside and there will be strips between each siding to keep the rolling stock from knocking in to each other.

First thing was the making up of the 4 thicker legs, with aluminium section. 2 of these legs are high enough for the lid hinges to sit on, this board has had the sides raised also to make up the rolling stock box. The other 2 boards are yet to have their higher sides fixed on, as are the rest of the boards which will have about 1 inch around them to stop anything being knocked on the floor. I have allowed for the extra thickness of all the boards when mounting the aluminium angle.

post-27-0-50334200-1478694963_thumb.png

The bottom ones can be closer together as these will only have about 1" lip around them wheras the ones at the top will have lids on so need to be spaced further apart.

Then come the next bit I am on to, the 2 narrower boards that connect the fiddle yard to the scenic boards, they are the same length as the others but much narrower so the aluminium angle has to be spaced inboard. Once strengthend with addictional angle it will all fit, the space on the right will house the lighting pelmets. This is were I am up to at the moment, as I say there will be aditional diagonal bracing to come, but the whole 25x10 layout now fits in to 2 trolley like structures.

Hi Michael,

Enjoying the build and looking forward to seeing this at exhibitions in the future.

There is a photo in December Steam World p38. Article is about someone from Loughborough's trainspotting days.

Hope it's of some use to you.

Happy new year everyone.

Not much progress on the layout, due to work commitments and the buying of a new house.

This is all in the finishing stages which will mean I have a workshop to work on boards of the layout at home rather than a few set hours of club nights.

I do get free time with work but its rare that it coincides with when the club is open.

Several of us had a field trip to the station site recently. We were working on the dimensions of the tunnel from photographs but I decided the best way to get an accurate model was to get down there and measure it up. That I did, I took approx 100 photos of the sandstone bricks with a tape measure in shot. Ive never been down here before and unlikely I will again so I wanted to get as many shots as I could. I also wanted to wait until winter as there would be no leaves on the trees, luckily it appears there had been some felling recently.

Quick request.

I was recently asked by someone what the gradient from Huskisson up to Walton was. I have it somewhere and cannot find my info. Would anyone be able to help please?

Many thanks.

Mike

I'll check in the morning but from memory 1 in 80 from Huskisson at least up to Kirkdale.

Couldn't let myself go to bed without checking my memory so Page 57 of Volume 2 of Bob Pixton's books on  Liverpool & Manchester, this one on the CLC Lines states "The line is rising down (sic!) to Walton at a gradient of 1 in 200 and behind us it falls at 1 in 80 for a short stretch, then 1 in 100 towards level track at Huskisson".

Hello Michael. I have been watching this thread develop with great interest.  I grew up on Walton Hall Avenue next to the railway bridge that carried the line over the road.  I had many a sneaky peek at the actvity on the triangle when I went through the park with my mum. I loved going through the subway under the track near the turntable.  My sisters and I used to stand in our back garden on Grand National Day and wave at the racegoers on the specials.  Sometimes they would be held at the signal at Fazakerley South Junction and we would shout hello to the passengers!  I went to Alsop school and my mates and I used to look around the shed after school.  One of my mates was a fellow railway enthusiast and we were always a bit sad to see how the site was crumbling away. Like so many of Liverpool's railways, it would have formed part of a superb metro type system.  Your layout looks great already and I hope I can get to see it in the flesh someday soon.  Good luck and well done!

Hi Eddo63.

I loved hearing your memories. That is one of the reason I enjoy modelling real locations.

Its all still a bit slow the moment due to my house move. We have been mocking up the tunnel area in card. None of the wood and card here will be used they are just helping measurements and for templates.

Hopefully we will see some progress now.

I have moved house and have a small garage, it seems weather tight and I have moved 2 scenic boards in. The tunnel end.

I have also ordered some 8x4 plywood to be delivered to the garage, there is too many cuts to explain to the timber merchant so now I can have it delivered and cut it myself, I couldnt do this previously at the club.

Im hoping that I can use my spare time better, it didnt always tie in with club nights.

I also have a small bedroom to use as a workshop for things like loco kit building.

Also, i have recently aquired this boiler card for a 4f shedded at Walton.

Some progress in the club last night. A start made on the embankments around the path and walkway tunnel that led to Walton Hall park and was a route many trainspotters took to bunk into the shed.

Its the first time I have ever used this building foam but another member brought lots of it in for his layout and allowed me to have some, once the glue has dried this will be shaved back some more and all this will be covered in grass later.

A lucky day off work has allowed me to make a start on the 2 end boards that I have taken home to my garage, covering up the tunnel. An 8x4 sheet of 6mm ply I cut to 5x3.

Above the tunnel mouth is slightly lower than the roads behind, this is where the station building was originally, Its taken a lot of measuring of maps, measuring the real location and counting bricks on buildings, then I cut this area out, the 6mm ply boards are just mocked up for the photos.

Inside the tunnel is nice and dark now and will be even more so when finished, I didnt want to be able to see that the trains were coming around a curve when the illusion is that they are travelling in a straight line through the tunnel.

Update on the Brassmasters fold up easichas for the Bachmann 4F . I made up the coupling rods and have fitted the Ultrascale wheels. Securing one side with Loctite then adjusting the other side by finger and thumb, on the bench it runs sweet but we shall see how it performs when it is on the layout. It is now fully sprung.
