Railroad Crosti 9F

Personally I think that the main picture we have on the Hornby website is a pre-production version, the photo shot of this loco in action at the Scotrail exhibition appears to be somewhat better detailed.

Has anyone actually seen the finished product as yet ?????

Someone remind me please.......does the late crest model have a smoke deflector fitted.??  Or for that matter the early crest one too.???

From various source's, the general consensus is that the early crest has no side smoke deflector whilst the late crest version does have this component fitted.

Though I check the Hornby Site again this morning. Now both are due 16/11/2015. Think I'm safe to go on Holiday now!  :swoon:

Though some online stores are still saying next 7 days. Any shop owner know, or does anyone have any more info? Or is this another time traveling glitch...  :jester:

Callum, Kernow Models stated this morning that it "should" arrive within the next two weeks, however as this has now been given the 16/11/15 date by Hornby I somehow doubt it.

The dealers now have no way of checking as the website for deliveries is now defunct and all info contained on the database is out of date. Seems interested parties still have a bit of a wait for this release....

I recall someone at Hornby saying that he didn't know why the Crostis were marketed as Railroad. The pony truck is certainly Railroad (although I think the spring centring is a much better arrangement than the pony truck used on, for example the Thompson L1). The old-style crimp-fastened coupler and steps attached to the pony truck let it down; I rather think they let the whole model down.

There is no scope for enhanced lining to create a main range version, nor has there been any mention of one. Could it just be that Hornby has decided to take extra time to lift the specification a little? I suspect my hope is false but wouldn't it be nice if Hornby made the extra effort to get the best out of a neat moulding?

Probably depends on the chassis, if they used the super detailed early 2000s Britannia tender & chassis, rather than the 1979 Evening Star tender drive tender chassis with the more recent top, it certainly would be passable as non-railroad.

From photographs it appears to be the former super detailed tender from the 7MT's, the chassis should be good as it is by all accounts a total redesign and will be used on the other 9f models in the range. Hornby are now quoting a date on their website for the late crest version as 3/08/15 whilst the early crest version is still mid November. It changes by the day, lol. :scratchhead:

Just looked again, both versions now shown as 18/08/15 !!!!

Scope for someone to produce an aftermarket pony truck, I think someone mentioned Comet for etched brass steps. With a bit of heavy weathering, Job done..... :butcher:

  • 2 weeks later...

I just cancelled my order for an Early Crosti 9F, literally almost with tears in my eyes. I used to pay about 1.30 EUR per pound during 2012, 2013 and 2014 with the odd bounces upwards and downwards. Since January the Euro dropped and in consequence the pound costs me just in excess of 1.50 EUR now. This is a price increase of over 10% on top of the average increases of roundabout 20% of the major RTR manufacturers. In the past I have been able to compensate price increases outside the hobby but this has not worked for me in this instance. It literally hurts.

By the way I am a modeller in the age 20 to 29 segment so clearly in a minority. But there must be others too, with or without the currency exchange problem. A community always loses the weakest members first if the environment variables changes – I certainly feel left behind by the rising RR prices of new items. I don't blame anyone, but please manufacturers, take notice.

I get round that by having bank accounts in both countries. Currently all my UK stuff is paid for by UK pounds. But I agree the Euro has weakened against the pound drastically causing me to stop purchasing in the UK using my Euro account. I was in Scotland recently and used only pounds, had I used Euros, I would paid nearly twice as much.

That said with the pound strong, China price should be a tad cheaper for Hornby.

By contrast the Canadian dollar has not changed much against the Euro, and purchase of Rapido stock, although looking expensive in CAD figures was actually a third less converted to Euros.

Don,t loose hope yet, with patiance, some Crostis may appear in the bargain bin.

They are in stock somewhere. It's definitely the late crest that has the deflector on it.

If this sighting is anything like that when the Blackmotors appeared, the Crosti's will be here in the UK next week..
