RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted May 20, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 20, 2016 2017? As soon as that? Couldn't you give us a bit more warning? Maybe if 'we' thrash the Wombles on the 30th, I shall be inspired to solder a wire to another wire? There is work progressing for the layout (Parkside and other kit bashing), just not on the layout. However, I did remember last night that I should be getting the Incline Tunnel area sorted ASAP as that only needs a bit of wiring up and then I can start fitting Stu's Hungry Caterpillar and the tunnel approach. It will also make a nice photogenic area (says he.....). Incidentally, I am replacing many Parkside plastic buffers with Dave Franks' cast buffers. Lovely little items and as long as I do a bit of research then the improvement in the look of the van or wagon should be quite good. Apart from Paul Bartlett I doubt there are many Webbers that will tell me " that particular van or wagon shouldn't have 'those buffers' " (I hope). By the way, SWMBO may be getting her replacement Conservatory, so my 'loft stash' is looking safe. Phil

I hate getting into talking about cash stuff but it is actually a joint decision and to do with sorting out our finances and it is to do with planning for our care costs. Don't ask, but the future looks grim for the costs of care in old age. Briefly, money in bank when the time comes is counted when considering cost of care. Money in house that will be sold and the dosh distributed a good while before we pop off does not count in the calculation if it is done correctly. Not something I would have normally wanted to do as it goes against my principles, but needs must I'm afraid. So, back to SOSJ. Phil

Both of us get what we want for our hobbies, we had enough years when we had to do things on a shoestring. The current policy is do it now whilst you still have your marbles. For when I start losing mine there's a special bottle or two of cask strength Single Malt in reserve.
bigwordsmith
This group is certainly eclectic! On the subject of old age provision - the 'Act' theoretically sets out lots of protections for people's homes , but the flip side is you then get only what the Local Authority is prepared to pay. One of my clients runs a homeware company and the horror stories I hear from them make me shudder. Bottom line is that the costs of a decent career home - I believe there are a few - are around 2x what the local authority will pay out, so if you want to be able to enjoy some quality of life when you are old and dribbling, you really do need a wedge or two behind you. My dear mother had Alzheimers and was physically incapable for the last eight years of her life, four of which she spent in a home with my father funding it. THis was supposedly a good one - run by catholic nuns - and my father always wept when he remembered turning up one day outside visiting hours and seeing my mother in a long line of old ladies in their nighties sitting in wheelchairs outside the bathroom as they took their turns to go in. He felt it was a blessing in one way that she didn't recognise him, because he knew she would never have forgiven him for letting her get into that position. So the flip side is that there has apparently been a massive reduction in the reporting of Alzheimers cases- According to a report in the Daily Mail ( so it must be true) they are down 30% against the predictions of a decade ago. SWMBO thinks it might be related to the war and the food rationing that want on - one reason why she won't let me eat Spam! The other good news is that Alzheimers is around 1/10th as likely to hit you if you keep an active mind. One of the ways they suggest those of us whose hair is less than dark do this, is to 'take up an engaging hobby, especially one that involves using the mind and hand-eye coordination' Well that's my excuse for popping up the loft whenever the wether looks dreich! Both CTMK's parents had this dreadful condition, and we have experience of care homes, good and bad, and also good and bad stories regarding funding etc. In an ideal world, everyone would have a massive wedge in the bank to fund totally private care in one's own home, everything catered for 24/7, thus leaving one in complete control of one's life. One day, space travel might advance to the extent that it would be possible to travel to that ideal world. In the meantime, we all have to live on this world. brianusa
Good on you, Phil! There is, believe it or not, more to life than railways; likewise as there is to other things in life. We can't be playing trains, playing golf, watching football and all the other interests all the time, so now and again for light relief we change the subject. Nothing wrong with this as long as we respect the appropriate topic in the long run. I once mentioned an off topic remark on another forum and was roundly castigated as though I had mentioned the usual forbidden subjects. Needless to say I don't venture there much any more! Brian.
