Washout at Dawlish

Recommended Posts

Completely off-topic, but of general interest - was that grain being unloaded from the ship?

Nordic Dianna has a Grain Capacity of 198,562 cbft according to Flinter

For the attention of Don and CK.

I have received a request from Dawlish Beach Webcam asking if you would be happy to share your images on the DB FB page. Any questions you have etc then you could always PM our Moderator who sent the request, via DB FB message. Clearly we never use any without permission so would appreciate your assistance if willing?

Thanks so much.

Roger

Will send PM.

Those L sections are quite a casting. Do we know who is casting them and where please?

Strange how this work is no-longer news to NR....

Andy G

HEARSAY

did hear some of the units came from Derbyshire, but not sure if that was the "L" shaped ones used in the original hole

The seawall paving edge/coping pieces used from Rockstone bridge back to Redrock came from Redruth/Pool in Cornwall

I know that as I spoke to the lorry driver who delivered them to Dawlish Warren

Interesting

High tide was 9.16

from DBeach Web Cam

you can just see the white cabin top  by the bottom left hand corner of the larger, front jack up barge

just previous to that 2 tugs with pontoons departed for Teignmouth

There was a question on Dawlish Beach cam about the plates/plaques

appearing on cam along the inside of the seawall parapet

I just been down Redrock & along the sea wall to Rockstone bridge & saw an electrician at work

he was fixing LIGHTS to the outside of the wall,

the wire would then go over the wall to the board on the inside where junction boxes will go

every 12 feet from Rockstone to the steps

The railway has also to contend with weather factors causing cliff erosion

not serious,  but ongoing is the soft sandstone getting saturated, then a frost like we have recently had causes spalling, expansion of the wet rock, causing lumps to 'detatch' from the cliff faces

as seen here near the signal gantry between Rockstone & Redrock

this slope was all green when I was last along here

A regular visitor was spotted observing the latest  activity

probably glad that he/she was upwind of the drilling crew that was hard at work

in the compound at Dawlish Warren was seen a stack of 8 or 12 steel reinforcing cages

fabricated ready to be used inside the 'L' units

down 150 awaiting signal to clear

This wouldn't be the cliff that someone wants to build desirable residences on top of, would it?

The big red spidery thing is back!!!

Well not exactly at Dawlish.

Saw it yesterday a few miles inland

on the A38 just west of Buckfastleigh

where the road over bridge is being rebuilt.

Where will it turn up next???

Ray, when you think about it, the walk way along the wall during the summer months are quite often frequented by foot sloggers on there way home from the Warren. So I would imagine the help of extra lighting would be welcome and providing the waves are kind the lights should hold up, of course if the covers are durable.

Life expectancy? For a long time we hope.

Unfortunatly they do not look strong enough to withstand the attentions of certain elements of Jo public

Surely you're not suggesting malice or vandalism DC? Devonshire people aren't like that....are they lol? Point taken though, but let's hope not for the sake of the local folks.

Indeed.

Nice to see Dawlish Beach pics in this thread thanks. I will still support D.B. Have been watching the crane unloading tonight

Those lights, post #4627. How long are they expected to last?

MY CONJECTURE

Judging by past experience, just temporary for the workmens benefit & the residents

( less floodlights pouring into bedrooms for week/months on end)

when the Dawlish Station footbridge roof was damaged early summer,

the contractor installed custom bent stainless steel handrail around the curve of the walkway where they were working

BUT  when they finished they removed it

While it would have been a good safety feature on that corner permanently,

it has been heard, everything other than approved major works have to returned to "as it was"

Also the mounting boards would not  comply with regs

and safety rails would have to be put in front to avoid pushchairs, wheel chairs,  etc., causing damage to them,

or ripping them off the wall leaving bare wire exposed

EDIT;-

photo of short lived railings from May 2014

Don - I'm certain that you're correct. No one has mentioned permanent lighting to me. You'd have to install it the whole length of the wall as well, and there's no evidence of that elsewhere, I think (ie. on the sections already reopened to the public)?
