DBSD
For those who wanted the Meteor footage then i'll post the link. The footage was viewed by the experts at the royal observatory and they believe it is a meteor of a few inches diameter. It was heck of a glow for something so small. It's not the ISS coming down or a flare of any type as it only lasts a few seconds. It looks to have fallen somewhere beyond chesil beach or burnt up completely. It really is amazing what you spot when watching the repairs. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1553734574884188&set=vb.1392107411046906&type=2&theater Spotlight came very late for the show so they have it on their facebook page. not sure if they will feature it tomorrow instead as they were still asking for info at 6.25pm Edited February 9, 2015 by DBSD

bgman
Whilst sat in a warm and comfortable seat travelling back from Truro on an HST today through Dawlish I did feel for the guys in their Orange "suits" stood on the rig ! I'm more than happy to give a "Nod to Brent" ( enjoy the blog immensely) however, I did give a bigger nod to the Dawlish workforce braving the elements. Well done lads !
Granitechops
Friday 13 Feb 2015, taken just after high tide for those concerned for my safety, my viewpoint was where the waves did not come so high as in the photos. one thing for sure, the drains in that new wall are working! at least 6 can be seen in this pic Some minor damage was observed, access stairs, temporary scaffolding ones? displaced from the bottom Which is not surprising as the waves at that point were quite high! Standing at the top end of the approach steps two Rockstone bridge, when a wave hit the sea wall you could feel the path shake

brianusa
Those who live in the houses across the tracks must dread days like this. All that salt water spray must make a constant mess of their windows and cars and just as well there's no room for gardens which don't do very well with salt water. Brian. Professor Plumtree
Looks like a new power distribution scheme has been installed overnight with two 16 amp sockets behind each lighting position. If NR could leave this in place after the work is finished, maybe Dawlish Council could arrange a new weekly market* along the elevated sea wall, and the lights would be useful for walking the sea wall after dark ? * if you've never been to Dawlish in season, you won't necessarily know that car boots and markets are very popular
RMweb Gold Ramblin Rich Posted February 15, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2015 (edited) Path lighting is a good idea, but I really don't think there's enough width for stalls plus browsing people and other walkers..... RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted February 15, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2015 Path lighting is a good idea, but I really don't think there's enough width for stalls plus browsing people and other walkers..... The lighting is only temporary, for the on-going works, there are no plans for permanent lighting after these works are finished.

All that salt water spray must make a constant mess of their windows and cars and just as well there's no room for gardens which don't do very well with salt water. I would hope that they may now be able to obtain lower insurance premiums, once this work has been finished...

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted February 15, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2015 All that salt water won't do the cars a lot of good either. A bit off topic but I remember a car salesman in Whitley Bay always said he thought he could tell which side of the road people very near the sea lived on. He was sure the seaward side of the car corroded more. David
Fat Controller
A bit off topic but I remember a car salesman in Whitley Bay always said he thought he could tell which side of the road people very near the sea lived on. He was sure the seaward side of the car corroded more. David A neighbour's daughter used to park on the main road at Sandgate, where there always seemed to be a space; she discovered why, after a storm, when the sea-ward side of her car had been stripped down to bare metal. Granitechops
40 years ago I used to clean windows down Sealawn Terrace, Nobody wanted windows doing in winter .but the B&Bs wanted then clean for Easter hols. Some then had to be scraped with a paint scraper to get rid of salt crystals Some were so sand blasted, they resembled lightly frosted glass that's mainly the ground floor windows
Granitechops
Tuesday 17th Feb 2015 beautiful day in Dawlish, for most of the morning not a cloud in the sky. 12.02 south bound 125 ( no No. on the yellow cab end??? facing forward?) the crew are cracking on with the job At 1 pm this container, assumed to contain the drilling rig was craned off one of the JUBs and down onto the seawall 5 mins later some procedure was followed and quickly the container was removed back to the JUB
Granitechops
Managed to get out before the worst of the rain this am, From Rockstone bridge, drainage construction works close up, noticeably there is no tongue on this end of the 'L' unit for some reason groove on 'L' unit at other end of run Aerial activity Looks a bundle of steel channels loads of steel & scaffolding shorts on deck of JUB 1 no 'L' units visible on deck, and traffic lights removed from Exeter road, but all pumps are there at road side, so looks like this is a bit of complicated drainage & reinforcing being weaved around it before pumping can start again with bad weather forecast at weekend with high tides due someone has also thought of the local motorists!!! well done that guy or gal Edited February 19, 2015 by Granitechops
Granitechops
Between the slope at the coast guard end of the low walkway & the first 'L' unit there is an old major drain outlet, seen here with its cast iron cover flap below which are some recent holes with inserted reinforcing protruding horizontally Parallell train windows & scaffolding uprights the remaining space for 'L' units at the north end piles of what appear to be wood shuttering at the south end maybe next lift up is contemplated?? & theodolite in view The crane then lifted a compressor, to a great height, & reached out a fair way may be, possibly testing bells & whistles on his overload warning systems

Granitechops
More containers were removed by barge from the JUB on this mornings high tide it was said by local observers that they were appearing to batten down the hatches, & remove all at risk plant to Teignmouth docks before the tidal swell/storm arrival the larger container might have been the one with the drilling equipment in it
