Hi David,

Do you happen to have any photos of the crane, bogie bolster, tool van & GWR brake van in the photo below.

I'm looking to model the consist in 7mm and would appreciate any photos that will show any further detail and livery.

Hi Chris,

I've done a search of all my north east railway images and have not found any photos of these vehicles.  Mine only cover 1980 to the present time, all the cranes etc I have photos of are much more modern ones.

Do you happen to know when yours was taken?

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I'll see if I can find anything in books.

David

Good to see a picture of Benfleet  spent a great deal of my life there in the forties and fifties used to stay on the steep hill opposite the station and went for bus rides on Canvey Island happy days. The track laying at Laindon is very dated  and shows how many men used to work on the railway always enjoyed watching trains from Fenchurch St hauled by steam not always tank locos sometimes Black Fives very boring now.

Gosh, Hillards! I remember them well from my student days in York in the 1970s. A regional supermarket chain of the pile 'em high variety (cans displayed in cut open boxes).  I don't suppose they are still going.

They did have a quite reasonable meat counter, though.  Tomato sausage, anyone?

Bought out in a hostile takeover by Tesco in May 1987, two years after celebrating their centenary. When we moved to Derbyshire in 1983, Hillards was our nearest supermarket, in Alfreton.

and by the time I moved to Northampton in September 88, the Hillards in Jimmy's End next to Franklin's Gardens ha been rebranded - but was still referred to as Hillards for quite a few years after! I think it has been knocked down now!

Thanks both.  I've learned something today. In my ignorance I had imagined that Hillards' reach extended no further than Yorkshire and Humberside.

Good afternoon, David. That’s a superb set of photo’s of the London Tilbury and Southend. In C2448, west of Laindon, with a class 308, on an up passenger service, in September, 1975, on enlarging the photo’ it would appear there are not many passengers on the train.

The photo’s of Paddington on the 27th July, 1988, are excellent and C9591, of class 121, 55031, on an up service, is a superbly composed shot of the unit, lit by the Sun perfectly.

In the final set of black and white photo’s, of Derby, in about 1961, you have posted some truly outstanding photo’s which you took with the Brownie 127. That first photo’ is exceptionally good, full of atmosphere, with all that smoke and steam. The two BR class 5’s, on that down express really must have been struggling for some reason. And thrre must have been plenty of wheel slip too as they struggled to get a grip on the rails.
In the last photo’ of an ex-LMS, 8F, on an up freight train, you have a sight which was so commonplace, and can never be seen again.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Good evening, David. What a delightful selection of photo’s of South Stainley, on the Harrogate - Ripon - Northallerton line, on the last day of services, in March, 1967, along with the rest of the photo’s of York.

The first two photo’s of South Stainley, are sad, but a great record of some of the last trains to run over the line, and that is an excellent shot of a class 46, on a Newcastle to Liverpool Lime St in J794.
The first of the York photo’s, of Merchant Navy, 35026, Lamport and Holt Line, on a special train, the Elizabethan, from Newcastle to Kings Cross, in October, 1966, in J675, is a fairly rare sight of a Bulleid pacific at York in BR days.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Hi David,

The photo was taken around the mid 1980's.

This is another photo of it passing Gateshead but without the tool van & GW Brake Van.

I'm sure I've seen the GW Brake Van in one of your photos at Plessey Crossing at Newsham during track relaying.

Hi Chris,

I've had another look and have found these three with Toads.  I think the last one may be a different Toad as it has the open end covered in.

How neat Tyne Yard is in the pictures compared to today's overgrown quagmire

We might think, given that Dave F posts quality, annotated images several times each day, that he'd be busy enough preparing those for our delectation. But no, here he is making special postings to help another member. Chapeau, as they say around here, Dave F!
