The photos without trains are just as interesting, few photographers capture infrastructure the way you do.

Best wishes

Martyn

Agree with that Matryn.  Infrastructure can be very interesting and a lot of Davids photos show this very well such as the latest Swayfield batch.  I always like the train in the landscape views rather than those three-quarter shots of just locos that almost everyone takes.

I can't get enough clarity from C869, C0978 or C0999 to be able to ID them for you. Zooming, C0978 looks very much like one of the 11xx batch - at that time most of the non-Deltic hauled trains, requiring electric train supply, would use this batch (barring 1100), along with the 'Generators' (1500-1519) - it's not one of those, the ETS jumper being in the wrong position. In July 1972, only 1100, 1101, 1107 and 1111 were blue - my suspicion is that it possibly could be 1101.

Thanks for trying to identify them - I had a good look before I posted them and had the same problem, I just couldn't quite see the numbers.  I wished I'd written them down at the time - I often ddn't bother then.

Good evening, David. That’s a great set of photo’s of three places on the Midland. C15283, at Peak Forest, with 37687 about to run round, on the 24th August, 1990, is a superb shot of the 37 from high up, and it gives a different perspective of the locomotive.

The photo’s of Toton and Trowell in the 1970’s are an excellent selection. C3610, at Toton, with a Class 40, on a down ballast train, in October, 1977, is a well composed photo’ of the 40 in the October sun.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

1902 view of Chinley's second station. Stratfordman72 Flickr photo.

Splendid photo. It's one taken by the Midland Railway's photographer and entered in his register on 25 February 1903, DY2470. Here's an embedded link to a scan of a better copy, on the Midland Railway Society website:

A rather ornate lamp on the side of the building and another one just showing on the opposite side.

I wonder what those two contraptions are on the platform?

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of the preservation era at Sewstern and Market Overton on the ex-British Steel lines beyond the High Dyke branch. J3444, at Market Overton, with Avonside 0-6-0ST, ex-NCB, Birchenwood Coke Co, in October, 1973, is a delightful portrait shot of the locomotive.

The black and white photo’s of Nottingham Midland are a superb selection. JVol6090, of Compound, 41021, on a Nottingham to Sheffield service, in February, 1951, is an excellent going away shot of the train.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Thank you for your sterling work, this year, David. It has been a joy, once again, to visit some old, familiar locations and times, together with many unvisited locations and historic images, courtesy of your Tardis. I shall be away until the New Year, so best wishes for Christmas and for good health and many more postings in 2024.

if the pictured spare boiler is now in use on FS, is the original still around?

And useable?

It was an A4 boiler and looking at online forums might have been passed to Bitterns' owners for use as a spare?   Someone directly involved with preservation would be better placed to comment here.

The spare A3 boiler came from Salmon Trout (again, I'm open to correction here as this was told to me second hand) and used to be the car park sign at Steamtown, placed beside the entrance.   As it was painted regularly it didn't deteriorate and that's why the barrel was still useable so long after it last steamed.   I can say I remember it at Steamtown; we used to go very regularly when my dad was in the working party for 4498 and saw it a lot.

Church Lane level crossing Class 37 down ex pass June75 C2085

Interesting pic - must be a fairly important train, RKB with Met-Camm (former Pullman) FO for dining.

Seems odd to me seeing a 37 on a long, mainline train but of course they were used on the GE trains to non-electrified destinations.

Good evening, David. That’s a great selection of photo’s of two totally different narrow gauge lines, the Sittingbourne and Kemsley in Kent and the Vale of Rheidol at Devils Bridge in North Wales. The last photo’ at Devils Bridge, with number 8, Llywelyn, on the 7th August, 1979, being a most excellent portrait shot of the locomotive.

The photo’s of the Great Eastern, at Church Lane crossing, between Ingatestone and Chelmsford, are a superb set. The first photo’ of a Class 47, on a Liverpool St. to Norwich service, on the 19th April, 1975, is a splendid and well composed shot of the train.

With warmest regards,

Rob.
