One of Stratford's cl.31/0 locos.

Note the Red Circle multi-working code.

Weren't there two 31/0s (31005 and 31019) bulled up by Stratford Deport with white roof and red buffer beams, prior to double heading a railtour?

Yes they were. The tour was the "Toffee Apple Farewell" which to place on 22/10/77. The route was Paddington to Portishead. Full details of the tour are on the Six Bells Junction website.

Switzerland again today at Arth Goldau station.  This is where lines from Zürich, Luzern and Rotkreuz (bringing trains from the north) meet.  The line then heads south as the Gotthard route.  It is also the junction for the Südostbahn line to the north east of the country.

In 1988 I stayed for just under a month at a hotel near the station, spending days exploring by train.

I'm really enjoying the European stuff you've been posting Dave - I have a penchant for watching old euro flics and TV shows from the '60s and '70s which often feature stock railway footage shot in France, Switzerland and Italy so these images are quite educational in their own sweet way. Even in a slightly drab state, the euro stuff looks far more glamourous than any of our more familiar BR fare!

Good evening, David. That is a superb set of photo’s of the London Tilbury and Southend, with most of them showing permanent way work around Dunton, between Laindon and West Horndon. C3802, of 37262, in April, 1978, is a good detail shot of one of the special vehicles for permanent way works. It will be of help for modellers.

The whole plate print of A2, 60533, Happy Knight, on the up Yorkshire Pullman, leaving Peascliffe Tunnel, in September, 1950, being a truly splendid photo’ by your Dad.

The photo’s, north of Nottingham, in black and white, around Linby, in 1952, are an excellent and historical selection. JVol6123, of class C12, 67363, working the Annesley Dido, from Bulwell Common to Annesley, push pull, in May, 1952, is a real gem, oozing atmosphere.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Morning David,  interesting pictures

Am I right in thinking the tunnel was originally double track but very tight clearances

What is visible in the tunnel portal is it something on the aqueduct or a vision into a different dimension!

Just noticed the blue and grey pullmans, are they from a belle set or loco hauled either way I believe both had been withdrawn by then but they look in good order

I believe it was originally double track.  I think it may be the other end of the tunnel that you can see.

Great pics- the tunnel often flooded and I was told the points (SGE’s I believe) in shot were working whilst under water (could be an old S&T wives tale mind) Ps- if you zoom into the RH side you can see a group/family? clambering over the anti-trespass railings onto the aqueduct.

One them will have been  Scottish & Newcastle Breweries Pullman Car S308S Cygnus.  The other will have been S301 Perseus.

They were ordered in 1938 and completed in 1951 and were used on the Golden Arrow.

Both were later sold and ended up with VSOE who rebuilt them to match other Pullmans they owned.

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic selection of photo’s at Shildon in 1975, the Stockton and Darlington 150th anniversary. C2348, of LNER Y3 Sentinel, 59, on the 24th August, 1975, is a superb photo’ of the Sentinel which was nice and shiny.

The whole plate print, by your Dad, of SR class L, 4-4-0, 31761, on an ordinary passenger train from Brighton to Sevenoaks, at Lewes, in October, 1950, is a real gem, of historical value.

The photo’s of Peterborough, on the 27th July, 1974, are a splendid set. C1709, of a Class 47, on the 12.52 Cleethorpes to Kings Cross, is a superb three quarter shot of the once common class 47.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

C1707 is 55 006, from the nameplate ("Napier Chronicles" confirms).

By coincidence, I was on 1A25 out of Peterborough (C1709) a couple of days ago - although these days it's an Azuma on the 10:45 Leeds - King's Cross. 🙂

Good evening, David. That’s a fantastic set of photo’s of the Foxfield Railway in 1976 and 1978. The last photo’ at Dilhorne, with Bagnall, Lewisham, and Bagnall, J T Daly, and Hunslet, Wimblebury, on the 29th May, 1978, is a well composed photo’ of the train in bucolic surroundings.

The whole plate print, by your Dad, of 8F, 48611, on a down class E mineral train, at Trent, in November, 1950, is another excellent and historical photo’ and I look forward to seeing more when you are able to post them.

The photo’s at the level crossing at Floriston, on the WCML north of Carlisle, just in England, on the 11th April, 1986, are a superb selection. The first photo’ of 47053, on a down freight train, is an excellent shot, and the cab front of the 47 has some patches of missing warning yellow paintwork.

With warmest regards,

Rob.

Is this the same Avonside Robert that is outside London Stratford station?  If so it appears to be in similar condition now as then (perhaps with a lick of paint and some wire mesh to stop anyone getting in the cab).

Off topic, not sure what connection there is with an Avonside engine to east London (better than being scrapped though :-)

As far as I can see it is the same one, as explained by the link below.

Except that it was Robert at Foxfield, long before it arrived at the Midland Railway Centre.
