paulprice
Well today I got some more cork to finish the surface in the storage yard, but better than this my new controller was delivered. I must admit its fantastic and the locomotives I have tried it with are very smooth, without mentioning brand names, its the one that comes with two free hand held controllers,
paulprice
well its time to contact glue the cork down in the storage yard, I mean what's the worst that could happen??
paulprice
Before I disappear to end up stuck to a surface in the spare room, am I the only one who has lots of little boxes with part finished projects in them?
cornish trains jez
Before I disappear to end up stuck to a surface in the spare room, am I the only one who has lots of little boxes with part finished projects in them? Nope, got a few those myself! In fact I would imagine many of us have a few projects on the go at any one time.
paulprice
Tell me about it, I have a 7F to finish, signals to complete, god knows how many wagons to weather, if I decide to run them full adding loads to 50+ po wagons, lamps to add to my engines (if I can find some in stock somewhere), more figures to finish for the layout, the storage yard to finish, tree's to make........... Oh the endless list
paulprice
Well I managed to spend a little more time on the two scratch built Narrow Boats I have been building over the last few months and they are nearly at the stage where they can be painted. I know there will be many Narrow Boat specialists out there who will be outraged with my output, but to me they look reasonable, and considering that they are made from effectively scrap materials keep my more prudent side more than happy. Handrails and rudder controls (if that is the correct term) are made from staples, and I know the beading needs to be trimmed and more detail needs to be added, but that will have to wait for another day
paulprice
Now all I have to decide is what to have the partially open one carrying?
paulprice
And I have even managed to lay the cork on the storage yard, now all I need to do now is squeeze in as many tracks as possible for the main lines and then the dead end sidings for the branch. Looking at the area I have available it seems very very tight?
Black Sheep
Have the open one carrying anything you like, narrow boats carried anything and everything prior to the railway from cotton bundles to coal to packed goods. through the 30's to the 50's (I believe) independent boat owner / operators had been bought out by bigger companies who were in turn being bought out by the railways. Perhaps a trip to the waterways museum at Ellesmere Port for inspiration?
paulprice
I went to Ellesmere Port last year the with other half and the Mother in law, I must admit I was really disappointed and will not be making another trip, perhaps I just caught them on an off day, but they give the impression that the only thing that matters to them is the revenue they generate from the shop and cafe. Whoops nearly got me started on a rant there I think the I may paint them in a maroon livery or a decent dark blue as for what they are carrying I suppose it would help if I could decide what products the canal side factory produces? or is it all hush hush, ministry produced goods? okay time for a little rant MAPLINS AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Feel better now
Black Sheep
Perhaps more logical to think where your layout is based to work out what industries would be in the area and thus what would exist to support the industry. For example, my layouts tend to be based around the lakes / just south of so there'd be slate traffic and timber along with wool My scant research would have coal heading in. If you're based around Manchester for example then paper, printing and cotton would be moved around the area, across in Yorkshire you'd have steel and wool / cotton Your factory might not be the main industry, but could be producing items for large local industry. If there's a large brewery in town then this might be a coopers works, making the barrels taking in wood & coal Coal is a safe bet for anywhere in the era we model. paulprice
Thanks for the ideas, I think I may have to do a little more research into this, plus I need to get the water surface sorted and installed. Or I might just go and play with my trains?
paulprice
Well very little progress on the layout over the last few days, though I was able to spend an hour on it today, as the Domestic Overlord said I was a good boy I must admit I an not sure about the blue on the canal boats, maybe a second coat might look better? I even managed to throw a little paint on a couple of Buses for the layout,
paulprice
Well I managed to get half of the storage yard finished today, and I have the burnt fingers to prove it lol The question now it what trains should I fill it with? Have you any suggestions?

paulprice
Well me and the Domestic Overlord have just got back from a few days away in North Yorkshire and it was good to relax, before returning home to the more routine stresses in life. All was going well until we visited York and the other half suggested that as I was a good boy I could spend a few hours in the NRM, what a mistake that was.....
